Hammock buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to buy a first hammock on amazon.co.uk, and the same word covers a nylon sheet near 600 g and a cotton bed you would not want in a rucksack. A hammock buying guide only helps if you decide the job first: a dry afternoon in the garden, a bed you carry, or a night outside. This page walks those checks in order, using listings captured on 19 October 2026. It is not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices, stars and the ten kept listings sit on the [hammock comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/hammock).

Start with the job, not the fabric

The first split is what you will do with it this month, not which brand sits at the top of a search. A garden lounge can be cotton, canvas or polycotton: you can bring the cloth indoors when it rains, and you are not carrying 1.68 kg to a train. A hammock you walk with wants nylon, straps in the box, and a packed weight under about 1 kg. Sleeping out wants that light bed plus gear none of these boxes includes. On this capture the shelf runs from about £11 to £36. If the job is a night rather than a sit, read the camping hammock page before the stars. A bare nylon bed has no roof, and a thicker garden cloth will not fix a cold underside.

Length, anchors and the word double

Two healthy trees, a stand you already own, or fixings a competent person has installed come before the cloth. A stand with no bed is a different product. One tree, or none, means the hammock is the wrong purchase until the anchors exist. Flat lengths run from 190 x 100 cm up to about 2.7–2.9 m by 1.4–1.5 m. UK reviews describe the longer band as a place for one adult to lie, and they call the 190 cm cotton small above about 170 cm or about 90 kg. Double is not a measurement. Glymnis prints two people at 275 x 140 cm, and several UK reviews say one adult fills the centre. A length can also be printed twice: one Cycayit title says 220 x 140 cm and the field says 2.7 x 1.4 m. COVACURE prints 106 x 59 inches, 270 x 150 cm and 2.65 x 1.51 m.

Straps, ropes and the lower load number

Wide webbing with sewn loops is what you want if you have not bought straps. Bramble and the short cotton hammock ship ropes you tie. The nylon listings and the ANYOO ship straps and clips. DD Hammocks prints 125 kg on its own daisy-chain straps, which are not in these boxes, and that figure sits below several cloth ratings here. Stay under the lower number when the page argues with itself. AnorTrek’s bullet says 230 kg and the field says 500 lb. ANYOO recommends 250 kg and cites a TÜV static figure of 300 kg, while the field prints 660 lb. COVACURE’s field says 330 lb and a bullet also says 150 kg. This site did not repeat a seller’s test, and no British Standard for this hammock turned up. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are a legal floor, not a kilogram you can borrow. ANYOO is 4.7 from 25,149 reviews and AnorTrek is 4.7 from 5,077. Either Cycayit row is 4.4 from 11. The FORYNXHWIN item weight of 50 g is not credible. How the straps should sit is the how to hang a hammock page.

What this guide will not rank

This URL does not pick a winner, a safest hammock, or a waterproof shelter. Nylon that dries quickly is still not a tarp. A stated load is a seller’s figure, and stars are amazon.co.uk aggregates, not a bench test. Skip a two-person title if the reviews describe one lying place, a 190 cm cotton if you are tall, ropes if you wanted loops, and an 11-review listing if you wanted a history.

Common questions

What should you decide before you look at brands?
Decide whether you are sitting in the garden, carrying the hammock, or sleeping outside. A garden sit can be a heavier cotton or polycotton. A carry wants nylon and straps under about 1 kg. A night needs a tarp and insulation under your back, and none of the ten listings here includes either. Brands are a later step, once that job is fixed, because the same search result mixes all three.
How long a hammock do you need for one adult?
In this set the beds UK reviews describe for an adult are about 2.7–2.9 m long and about 1.4–1.5 m wide, laid flat. The 190 x 100 cm cotton is the one reviewers call small above about 170 cm or about 90 kg. Length on the page is not always one number: check a title against the dimension field before you measure the gap between two trees.
Does double mean two adults?
Not on its own. Glymnis says two people in the title, and several UK reviews say one adult fills the centre, with the side panels used as armrests. A few reviewers did share it. Treat double as a claim you check against the reviews, not as a second sleeping place you can count on.
Do you need tree straps in the box?
You need a way to hang the bed without a thin cord around the bark. Straps and clips are already in the box on the nylon listings and on the ANYOO. Bramble and the short cotton hammock include ropes you tie. If you already own wide straps, ropes are less of a problem, though you still have to tie them.
What does a kilogram rating actually promise?
It promises the figure the seller printed. Where two figures disagree, the cautious reading is the lower one. This comparison did not test a seam or a strap. A 2022 Office for Product Safety and Standards recall of an Aldi Adventuridge hammock with stand, after a head-end seam failed, is a reminder that gathers can open. That model is not one of these ten.
Is a cheap hammock with 11 reviews a different risk?
Yes, in the sense that you have less history, not in the sense that a high price is a test. Both Cycayit rows are 4.4 from 11 reviews. ANYOO and AnorTrek have thousands. Eleven comments can describe a first weekend. They do not describe a second summer, a frayed rope, or a bag that fails after packing.
Can you camp in Britain with only the hammock?
You can sit in it. Sleeping out needs a shelter and something under your back, because the cloth is not a roof and the air under you pulls heat away. Campsite rules and the landowner’s permission still apply. The Countryside Code is not a permit to stay overnight.
