powder coated aluminium garden furniture: wipe, chips, rust

Wipe the coat and keep water out of the tubes, and treat an orange bracket as steel. Grey fade is not rust, and a chip is not a failed aluminium frame.
On this page

You fold the lounger, wipe the arm, and the cloth leaves a pale streak on the grey tube. One hinge is orange. The tube beside it is still the colour it had on delivery day. Powder coated aluminium garden furniture is three parts: the metal of the tube, the coat on that tube, and the screws and brackets at the joints. Wipe the coat, keep water out of the open ends, and treat the orange part as steel until the listing says otherwise.
Products Compared read the Harbour Lifestyle care guide, the Which? note on making garden furniture last, and the Lazy Susan FAQ, next to the amazon.co.uk listings in our aluminium sun lounger comparison in October 2026. Prices and review counts are from that snapshot. We did not measure coat thickness in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.
In short
Wipe the coat, keep water out of the tubes, and treat an orange bracket as steel. The aluminium tube has not failed just because a screw has gone orange. Grey fade is a change in the colour of the finish, and a chip is a gap in that finish.
The coat, the metal, and the fixings
Powder coat is a baked finish. It can chip, fade, or hold water in a scratch. The Lichfield Deluxe, ASIN B004M17FXI, lists the frame as aluminium, powder coated, in pewter. In October 2026 it was £46.39, with 4.6 from 1,475 reviews, at 4.5 kg and 180 × 60 × 30 cm. The Homecall 30039, ASIN B07ZPL1XLV, lists a powder-coated aluminium frame in grey, at £124.81, with 4.5 from 1,162 reviews, at 200 × 70 cm and 9.2 kg. Those lines are the seller's description. They do not state a coat thickness, and they do not say the screws are aluminium.
Steel chairs are powder coated too. A grey arm is the colour of the finish. If the frame field says steel, or it is empty, that colour is not evidence of aluminium. Read the frame material on the aluminium or steel page before you treat a mark as an aluminium fault. Which? notes that aluminium can corrode, and that a coating helps. The same note says a light metal still blows away. At 4.5 kg the Lichfield can act as a sail on an open patio. Aluminium corrosion tends to a dull or pale patch. Orange is rust on steel. A steel bracket can stain the coat downhill while the tube under the stain is still sound.
How to clean an aluminium frame
Harbour Lifestyle's care guide asks you to clean the frame, dry it, and use a breathable cover. The coat lasts longer when water does not sit. As we used that guide, it gives no hour count and no pressure in bar, so the steps stay inside that instruction. After rain, or before you cover the lounger, wipe the tubes with warm water and a mild soap on a soft cloth, then rinse. Tip the frame so water leaves the open ends, and leave it unfolded until the joints are dry. Include the underside of the arms and the feet. A weekly wipe in a dry summer is a rule of thumb. In a wet week the rain sets the timing.
A pressure washer is the wrong tool. We have no bar figure from Harbour Lifestyle or Which?, so this page will not give you one. A jet fills an open tube and lifts a chipped edge. The bucket is slower on a 180 cm bed, and it keeps water from sitting in the scratch. Do not oil the coat. Those sources do not tell you to. Oil holds grit in a chip, and a squeak is the pivot, not a reason to wipe oil along the tube. Wash off any oil, then dry the arm. A wet plastic sheet stores water against the tubes. Cushions and winter sit on the how to look after page.
Chipped powder coat and orange brackets
A chip is a gap in the finish. Dull metal in the gap is the tube showing through, which is not on its own a failed frame. Which? is clear that aluminium can still corrode, so a pitted or powdery patch is corrosion of that metal. Keep the patch dry. Touch up a chip only when the manufacturer names a product for that frame. We have not sourced a tin, so this page will not name a paint. Another enamel can peel and hold water in the gap. A chip at a weld, or a tube that flexes when you sit, is a strength problem. Paint will not put the wall back.
An orange bracket
UK reviews of the Homecall 30039 include a rusty bracket. Check the screw, the nut, and the bracket before you blame the tube. Rusty screws on aluminium furniture are a parts problem. Steel fixings rust in UK rain while the aluminium beside them stays grey. Replace the fixing with one of the same diameter and length. A larger screw in a soft thread ruins the hole. The ATR recliner, ASIN B07CWJPXJL, was £189.00 with 4.5 from 145 reviews, and one UK review describes stripped M6 threads in the aluminium. Stop once the thread has gone. Wipe a stain that has only run down the coat. If the coat is lifting in a sheet, water is already under it, and a cloth will not reseal that edge.
Fade is not the same as rust
Grey powder coat lightens in sun. The Homecall is grey, and notes on its UK reviews record colour fade in about a month, beside a rusty bracket. That is one model, at £124.81, 9.2 kg, and 200 × 70 cm, with 4.5 from 1,162 reviews. It is not a clock for every pewter lounger. The Lichfield is listed as pewter and powder coated, and the notes we used mention a torn 600D polyester fabric, not a fade date.
Aluminium furniture colour fade is a change in the coat. Rust is a change in steel. A pale arm with dry joints is a colour note. An orange nut on a grey tube is a fixing. A powdery pit on bare aluminium is corrosion of the tube. Durability can matter under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for the goods you received, the price, and the description. This page will not say a refund follows from fade. Photograph the date and the arm if you raise it with the seller. The Homecall's textilene and foam are not the coat. A wet pad holds rain against the frame. The buying guide is where you compare a sling with a cushion.
What not to claim about lifespan
Do not treat a powder coat as a 15 to 25 year promise. That span is not in the Harbour Lifestyle guide, the Which? note, or these two listings as we read them in October 2026, and this page will not repeat it. The words "aluminium, powder coated" are a finish line. They are not a number of summers. The Homecall states that kind of finish and already has review notes on fade and a rusty bracket. A seller who offers the longer number without a source for that frame is guessing.
Lazy Susan's FAQ says their cast aluminium can be left outside, with the cushions covered. That is a maker's claim for their own furniture. It is not a rule for a powder-coated folding lounger, and it is not a rule for the screws. Cast aluminium and a thin coated tube meet standing water in different ways. A clean, dry coat, with water kept out of the tubes, is what Harbour Lifestyle ties to the coat lasting longer. "Longer" is not a year count here. A coating helps, aluminium can still corrode where the coat has gone, and steel fixings can still rust through a British winter. Cushions, covers, and winter sit on the how to look after page.

Leaving aluminium garden furniture outside in winter
A coated aluminium frame can stay out. Cushions, foam and a cover that traps damp are a separate decision for a UK winter.

Textilene or a cushion on a sun lounger
A sling lets the frame dry. A cushion holds rain against the coat, which is comfort with a maintenance cost.

Storing a folding sun lounger
Folded size is often missing from the listing. Drain the tubes before the frame goes into a damp shed.
