Leave aluminium garden furniture outside winter: cover

Leave a sound powder-coated aluminium frame outside under a breathable cover. Bring cushions indoors, and do not trap water that can freeze in the tubes.

The first hard frost is on the forecast, and the sun lounger is still on the patio with the cushion clipped to the sling. You can leave aluminium garden furniture outside in winter when the powder coat is sound, the tubes are dry inside, and a breathable cover keeps standing rain off the frame. The cushion, the pillow and any foam pad come indoors. A plastic tarp sealed to the ground is often a worse choice than a cover that can vent.
Which? has written that aluminium garden furniture can still corrode, so "it will not rust" is not a reason to leave fabric and pooled water on the bed until March. Harbour Lifestyle's care guide says the frame can stay out, with a breathable cover, cushions brought in, and no water left to pool and freeze. Garden Ornaments makes the same split for a powder-coated aluminium table: the coated frame usually stays outside, and you still check the steel fixings.
Products Compared read those public UK guides beside the amazon.co.uk listings in our aluminium sun lounger comparison in October 2026. Prices and review counts below are from that snapshot. We did not leave a frame on a patio for a season, and we did not run a corrosion test. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.
In short
Leave a sound powder-coated aluminium frame outside if a breathable cover keeps the tubes dry and no water is left to freeze in them. Take cushions, pillows and loose foam indoors. A sealed plastic tarp can hold damp against the metal, and a rusty steel bolt is a different problem from the aluminium tube.
The frame can stay outside; the soft parts should not
Harbour Lifestyle's guide says frame out, breathable cover on, cushions in. Stop at "aluminium can stay out" and you drop the two conditions that limit the damage.
In the October 2026 snapshot our top pick, the Lichfield Deluxe (B004M17FXI), is an aluminium tube, powder coated, with a 600D polyester sling, five positions and 4.5 kg, at £46.39 with 4.6 from 1,475 reviews. The sling can stay if it drains and is dry under the cover. One UK review reports torn fabric. A rip holds water, and a cover does not mend it.
The Homecall 30039 (B07ZPL1XLV) is powder-coated aluminium with textilene, quick-dry foam, a roof and a head cushion, at 200 × 70 cm, 9.2 kg and £124.81, with 4.5 from 1,162 reviews. The mesh can drain. The foam cannot, so store garden cushions indoors. Quick-dry is a summer claim, not a reason to leave foam out until March.
Garden Ornaments is writing about a powder-coated table that usually stays outside. A lounger adds a sling and a lock. Rain sits in a sling that does not drain, and a seized lock shows up when you fold the bed in April. A powder-coated finish line does not prove the tube is aluminium.
A breathable cover, not a plastic tarp
A cover keeps rain off a dry frame. It does not dry a wet one. Harbour Lifestyle's guide rejects a PVC-backed cover, because plastic with nowhere for damp air to leave holds condensation on the coat. Gardeningetc looks for vents, straps, and a shape that stops water pooling. A sheet that fails those three is not a cheaper version of the same thing.
A sound powder-coated frame can sit uncovered. A sealed tarp fails in a different way. Open rain wets the coat and runs off, if the lounger is not standing in a puddle and the tubes are not filling. A tarp pegged to the patio traps that water and gives a freeze something to expand in. If the choice today is a sealed builders' sheet or nothing, nothing is cleaner until you have a cover that breathes.
A loose cover sags into a pond. Which? notes that light aluminium can blow away, and the Lichfield at 4.5 kg is in that class, so a flapping skirt makes a larger sail. Strap the cover to the frame. Brush snow off before it melts and freezes overnight.
Fixings, chips, and water that freezes in the tubes
The tube and the screws are not the same metal. Garden Ornaments tells you to check steel fixings on powder-coated aluminium left outside. In the October 2026 snapshot, one UK review of the Homecall 30039 describes a rusty bracket and repeated replacements. That is one review among 1,162. Covering a failing joint hides the stain until spring.
Look at bolts, feet and the recline pins before the cover goes on. Do not sand a rusty bracket and then bury it for four months. A chip in the powder coat is a different fault. Which? says aluminium can corrode, so a broken coat is not saved by the word aluminium on the listing. Wash the frame on a dry day and look along the feet, the fold, and anywhere a bolt pulls at the tube.
Rain that runs into an open tube end sits there until you tip the bed. Water expands as it freezes. That is ordinary behaviour of water, not a figure we measured on these ASINs. Harbour Lifestyle's guide is aimed at pooled water in a freeze. Tip the lounger, let the ends drain, then fit the cover. A missing end plug makes the tube a bucket, and a plastic foot is not a seal. If the lock is already stiff, do not soak it and fold it hard. The how to look after steps cover that fold. This page only decides whether the bed stays out.
When the shed is the better place
Outside is the default only when the coat is intact, the fixings are quiet, the tubes drain, and the cover vents. Move the frame when the rail is badly chipped, a bracket is already rusty, the sling holds a puddle, or nothing will hold a 4.5 kg bed on an exposed patio. Cushions come indoors either way. Those faults are not a reason to buy a larger tarp.
The Lichfield is the bed a shed can take. The October 2026 bullets give a folded size of 80 × 61 × 16 cm at 4.5 kg. A separate spec field says it is not foldable, which conflicts with the bullets, so try the fold on a dry day before you plan around it. If the lock jumps or the cloth catches, stop. Forcing it bends bars.
The Homecall weighs 9.2 kg, with no folded size in the spec we stored, and UK reviews include bars that buckle when it is folded. If the fold already feels wrong, leave it set up under a breathable cover, or make space for it open. A shed only helps if it is drier than the patio. A bed against a wet wall spends the winter wetter than a covered frame outside. Folded size, if you are buying for that October move, sits in the buying guide.
What leaving it outside does not promise
Nothing here says a powder-coated frame will look new after a set number of winters. Harbour Lifestyle's conditions are a cover that breathes, soft furnishings indoors, and no pooled water in a freeze. Miss one and the line about leaving the frame out no longer applies. Garden Ornaments still wants the steel fixings checked.
One rusty-bracket review on the Homecall, and one torn-fabric review on the Lichfield, are reports from UK buyers. They are not a rate, and they are not your patio. A 4.5 kg bed can still blow away if the wind has a sail. If you want the contrast with a steel frame, that sits on the aluminium and steel page, and it does not change the cushion rule.
Stop if the tube is kinked, the lock drops someone, or a foot has already let the bed tip. That is a conversation with the retailer, not a winter cover. Do not bend a rail back and then leave it outside. The comparison is for choosing a frame whose listing actually says aluminium. It is not a certificate that this winter will be kind.

Storing a folding sun lounger
Folded size is often missing from the listing, and a bar can buckle if you force the bed shut. Measure before the shed.

Looking after powder coat on an aluminium frame
A chip in the coat and a rusty steel bracket are different faults. The tube can be sound while the fixing is not.

Textilene or a cushion on a sun lounger
A textilene sling drains. A thick cushion holds rain, so the pad comes indoors even when the frame stays out.
