Beach chair castors: measure the fixing before you look at stars

Updated: October 2026

You have a heavy hooded chair on the deck, the feet have started to scar the boards, and a search for beach chair castors has thrown up furniture packs, 400 kg titles, and sand tyres in the same row of results. Match the fixing you already have, keep the lowest load figure the listing repeats, then decide whether 50 mm wheels can live on your surface. The main [beach chair wheels](/hub/sun-loungers/beach-chair-wheels) comparison holds the product rows for this category. Nothing here was load-tested in a lab. Prices cited in the text are amazon.co.uk shelf figures from 19 October 2026.

Fixing before diameter

A beach chair castor is useless if it will not meet the corner you already have. Plate castors bolt through a flange, so you need a flat, sound face and you need to record the outer plate size and the hole centres, the way BIL Group and Blickle UK both tell trade buyers to measure a fitting. A threaded stem screws into a bush. Emuca's furniture set, ASIN B01DDE7GHE, is an M8 × 15 mm stem. A Himimi set sold as beach castors, ASIN B07GSYSYZZ, is an M10 × 25 mm stem. Livedale's note on Kenrick shepherd castors is blunt about the difference: M8 and M10 do not interchange, and an M10 thread is about 10 mm across the outside.

Load, including a title that disagrees with itself

Ross Castors publishes a rule of thumb for four castors: add the chair, the people, and the bags, then divide by three, so one wheel can lift when a board is uneven. Label that as Ross's supplier guidance, not as a British Standard and not as a test we ran. The Himimi listing at £25.53, rated 4.5 from 360 amazon.co.uk ratings on that date, is the worked example of why you do not average the kilograms. The title says 400 kg. The bullets mix 100 kg per castor with 100 kg for the set. The description says 50 kg each and 200 kg total. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, requires goods to match their description. If you cannot tell which capacity you would be relying on, skip that listing. The Emuca pack at £12.05 states 30 kg per castor, with two braked wheels and two free, on a 50 mm furniture stem. The 4.5 from 2,003 ratings is a furniture file, not a record of hooded beach chairs. Thirty kilograms on each castor is a light chair and light luggage, not two adults plus a cool box.

Diameter, brakes, and height

Fifty millimetres suits tight, level boards. Turf and the slots between deck boards punish that small radius. Inside this category the step up is a 75 mm double wheel, not a balloon tyre. A UK price comparison has shown the BGS 81940 75 mm double set for beach chairs from £34.04. That figure is a comparison-site signpost, not an amazon.co.uk shelf price. Soft sand belongs on the beach chair castors versus balloon wheels page. "With brake" can mean two wheel brakes, a brake on each wheel, or a total lock that holds the wheel and the swivel. Himimi states 75 mm of mounting height on a 50 mm wheel. Mix two heights on one chair and it rocks.

What you still check on the day

In Great Britain the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are the baseline for consumer goods. In Northern Ireland, GOV.UK says Regulation (EU) 2023/988 applies from 13 December 2024. BS EN 12528:1999 sets requirements for general furniture castors, including static load, a lock, and stem retention, and it excludes swivel chairs and specialised uses. No listing cited for this category says it was tested to that standard, so do not award one that claim. On the day you order, you still need four lines in your own handwriting: the fixing, the lowest load, the diameter, and whether the brake locks the swivel. The three ASINs in the main comparison do not supply those lines. Each UK file is a product URL without a stored title, price, or review count, so this guide uses the Emuca and Himimi listings as public examples. Fitting, including when to stop and call a joiner, is on how to fit beach chair wheels.

Common questions

Plate or threaded stem for a beach chair?
Use the fixing the chair already has. A plate needs a flat, sound corner and hole centres that match the new flange. A stem needs an intact bush, M8 or M10, with enough thread length. If you have no bush and no flat face, you are into a repair, not a pack of wheels.
Is M8 the same as M10?
No. They are different threads, and Livedale states they are not interchangeable. Emuca's example stem is M8 × 15 mm. Himimi's beach-castor example is M10 × 25 mm.
How do I turn a chair-plus-people weight into a per-castor figure?
Add the chair, the people, and the bags. Ross Castors' rule of thumb then divides that total by three, not by four, so the set still has margin when one wheel lifts. Then keep the lowest kilogram the listing itself repeats.
Why does one listing show three different kilogram totals?
Do not average the title, the bullets, and the description, and do not crown the largest figure. If you cannot tell which capacity you are buying, that listing is not a decision.
Do I need brakes on all four?
You need to know what "with brake" means on that page. Two wheel brakes leave two wheels free to roll. A total lock holds the wheel and the swivel. If people will sit on a fall and the brake type is unclear, do not guess.
Does UKCA mean the set meets a British Standard?
No. UKCA is not evidence that a listing was tested to BS EN 12528:1999, and none of the listings used here claims that test. The practical checks remain the fixing, the lowest load, the diameter, and the brake.
