How to stack sauna stones safely

Updated: October 2026

You have the correct box beside a cold heater, and now the practical question is how to stack sauna stones without trapping dust, choking airflow or loading the elements. Keep the heater isolated and completely cool, read its manual, wear gloves and inspect every stone before it goes in. The sequence is simple: rinse loose dust away, place each sound stone by hand, preserve the air path and cover the elements as the manufacturer directs. If you are still choosing material or diameter, return to our [sauna stones comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-stones) before installation; stacking cannot make an incompatible stone safe.

Rinse before the stones go into the heater

New stones often carry quarry or transport dust. Rinse them individually with clean household water until loose grit is gone, then let excess water drain. Do not soak them in pool water or seawater, and do not coat them with essential oil. Inspect as you wash. Set aside pieces with obvious fractures, friable surfaces or dimensions outside the manual’s range. A correct label does not oblige you to use every stone in the box. Harvia advises placing stones rather than dropping them, while HUUM also recommends gloves. The heater must remain switched off and cold throughout this work. If it is a mains electric model, follow its isolation instructions rather than trusting the control panel alone. For model-specific size and element guidance, see our sauna stones for electric heaters.

Build an ordered stack, not a jammed basket

Place one stone at a time so the pieces support one another rather than resting their weight on the elements. Keep deliberate air gaps through the charge, hide the elements from direct view where the manual requires it and avoid a tower above the rim. Several manuals put larger stones low in the basket and smaller pieces higher up. Harvia’s Legend instructions use large stones at the bottom and looser stones around the central air channel. HUUM’s DROP guidance likewise places larger stones low. Those examples do not override another model’s diagram. Saunom’s retail instructions say smaller stones at the bottom and larger ones on top, which is the reverse of those heater manuals. Follow the heater manufacturer, because it designed the element supports, air route and water path. Do not wedge an oversized rock between coils or break stones with a hammer to make the box fit. Finish at the level shown in the manual. Once the stack is complete, carry out the manufacturer’s commissioning heat with the room ventilated and nobody inside.

Use a ladle, not a jug

Water is a measured dose, not a way to flood the basket. Harvia’s Legend manual caps one throw at 0.2 litres, while HUUM suggests about 80 ml for DROP once the stones are hot. These are different manufacturer instructions for different heaters, not two ends of a universal target. Use the quantity and interval stated for your model. Use ordinary clean household water unless the manual says otherwise. Do not pour neat essential oil directly onto hot stones, elements or painted surfaces. Keep everyone clear of the heater when throwing water. A violent crack, fragments leaving the heater or repeated popping means the session should stop. The best sauna stones shortlist records mixed cracking reports for some boxes, but no product badge removes the need to react safely.

Restack yearly, and sooner when stones crumble

Heating and cooling slowly round sharp surfaces, settle the charge and produce fragments. At least once a year, or more often under heavy use if the manual requires it, isolate and cool the heater, remove the stones, clear loose fragments and inspect each piece. Replace cracked or crumbling stones with the approved type and rebuild the air gaps rather than topping up a compacted pile from above. Warning signs include slower heating, repeated operation of the overheat cut-out, visible element movement or debris beneath the heater. If a stone breaks violently, switch the heater off, get people out of the immediate area and wait until everything is cold. An element that is bent, exposed or causing a cut-out to trip needs a qualified electrician or the manufacturer’s service agent. Heat in pregnancy is a clinical question, not a stacking one. NHS-linked UK guidance advises discussing it with an appropriate healthcare professional. For the purchase, use the sauna stone buying guide and the exact heater manual.

Common questions

Do large sauna stones go at the bottom?
Many heater manuals, including examples from Harvia and HUUM, place larger pieces lower and smaller pieces above. That is not a universal rule: use the order and diagram for your exact model. When a stone seller’s generic instruction conflicts with the heater manufacturer, the heater manual takes priority.
How much water should I throw on sauna stones?
Use the heater manual’s measure. One Harvia manual permits up to 0.2 litres per throw, while HUUM suggests roughly 80 ml for a particular DROP heater. Do not average those figures or pour a jug. Apply clean household water only when the stones are hot and keep people away from the rising steam.
Why does a new sauna heater smell?
Loose stone dust and manufacturing residues can create an odour during commissioning. Rinse the stones, arrange them correctly and perform the first heat exactly as the manufacturer directs, usually with good ventilation and nobody inside. Switch off and seek advice if the smell is electrical, plastic-like, persistent or accompanied by smoke or a tripped safety device.
Is a bang from the stones normal?
A stone can crack during thermal cycling, so one sound is not proof that the heater has failed. Fragments, repeated violent popping or damage around an element are reasons to stop. Turn the heater off, keep people clear and allow it to cool completely. Replace failed stones and have damaged electrical parts checked professionally.
Can I pour essential oil directly onto sauna stones?
No. Use only a sauna aroma approved for the purpose, diluted in the ladle according to its label and the heater manual. Neat essential oil can ignite, stain surfaces or create an overpowering vapour. Never pour oil onto exposed elements, and do not assume an aroma-diffuser stone follows the same instructions as a heater.
