How to use a sauna hourglass

Updated: October 2026

You are about to heat a dry cabin, and a phone on the bench is a poor timer once the air is hot. How to use a sauna hourglass is four moves: screw the frame to timber you own, turn it once so the sand is on top, check one full run against a clock, and leave when the sand finishes or you feel unwell. The glass does not switch the stove, and it is not a dose. This guide is from the Products Compared editorial team, updated on 20 October 2026, not a lab test of the [Sauna hourglass comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-hourglass). Mount it before you heat the room

Fix the frame while the cabin is cool, with the tube vertical. An English instruction sheet for this style of timer says to use the screws supplied and not to rely on adhesive. Heat works against glue, so adhesive alone is a weak plan even when a listing mentions it. Temple Lodge lists two 30 mm screws and also claims adhesive. TIMCORR and the TFA Dostmann 40.1001 bullets on amazon.co.uk do not list screws, and VOSAREA is described as shelf or wall without screws named. If the box has none, do not invent a fixing, and use a shelf only where the listing allows it. Keep it visible from the bench, not on the wall above the heater. The Tylö Brilliant sheet sets a 1.5 metre limit, and warns that heat above the stove can impair the glass, for that aluminium model only.

Time one run outside the cabin

A printed tolerance is not a certificate for your tube. The same sheet allows up to two minutes of deviation because sand grains differ. That line is the maker's expectation for those timers, not a measurement of the eight amazon.co.uk listings. Time one full run in a cool room, before you heat the cabin. Turn the glass so the sand is on top, start a clock, and note when the last grains pass the neck. Temple Lodge prints 5- and 10-minute marks, and Hojalis prints 5, 10 and 15, so do not wait for marks another frame never had. TFA Dostmann calls the 15-minute scale a maximum recommended stay, not a legal dose. If the cold run sits well off that scale, keep the time you measured and read the sauna hourglass buying guide before you treat the glass as exact.

Turn it once and leave on the sand or sooner

In the cabin, turn the hourglass once through 180 degrees so the full charge of sand is on top. That single turn starts one run, and shaking a half-empty tube does not reset it. Leave earlier if you feel dizzy, sick, or too hot. If the sand bridges in the neck, tap the glass lightly or turn it briefly, as the instruction sheet says. Do not strike the frame on the bench. If it keeps clogging, treat it as not of satisfactory quality for the use it was sold for under section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and take that up with the seller.

When not to drill

Do not screw into a cabin you do not own. A gym, a hotel, or a borrowed barrel needs permission first. If the answer is no, leave the timber alone. A shelf is a substitute only where the listing offers one, as VOSAREA does. The hourglass does not control the stove. Moving guards or wiring to free a mounting spot is work for a competent person. If the only clear wall is directly above the heater, choose another face or skip the screw, because heat there can damage the glass. Leave when you feel unwell, even if sand remains.

Common questions

How do you start a sauna hourglass?
Turn the frame once through 180 degrees so the sand is in the upper bulb, which starts one run. Time a cold run against a clock first, because a 15-minute glass can finish a little early or late. Shaking a half-empty tube does not give you a fresh full interval.
Can you glue a sauna hourglass to tile?
No, not as the only fixing. The instruction sheet says to use screws and not adhesives, because glue is a weak plan in a hot cabin. Temple Lodge lists two 30 mm screws and also claims adhesive, so the screws remain the fixing. If the wall is not yours, ask before you drill. A shelf is an alternative only when the product is sold to stand on one.
What should you do if the sauna sand stops?
Tap the glass lightly or turn it briefly so a bridge in the neck can fall. The instruction sheet gives that as the first step and treats a thin static film as normal. Do not bang the frame on the bench. If it keeps clogging, speak to the seller under section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Do you have to stay until the sauna hourglass is empty?
No. Leave when the sand ends, or sooner if you feel unwell. WARMTH suggests about 10 to 15 minutes then a cool-down, with a 15-minute cap. Scandibox describes up to 15 minutes then cooling in cabins around 80–100°C. Those are venue habits, not a law. Feeling dizzy, sick, or too hot matters more than the grains still in the upper bulb.
When should you ask a GP instead of trusting the sand?
Ask a GP first if you are pregnant, or if you have heart disease, epilepsy, asthma, blood-pressure problems, or medicines that affect heat. Collingwood Surgery says you may avoid saunas in pregnancy because of overheating, especially in the first 12 weeks. A University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire cardiac rehab leaflet caps sauna and steam at 10 minutes in that setting. Those notes are not a personal plan.
