Sauna hourglass buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a home cabin and you are about to spend about £8 to £20 on a wall sand timer, while amazon.co.uk mixes cabin glasses with kitchen timers and accuracy slogans. This sauna hourglass buying guide is the checklist before you pay. The [Sauna hourglass](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-hourglass) comparison holds the listing table and the scores. Accept a 15-minute run, screws, and printed marks. Refuse a kitchen glass, adhesive-only fixing, and a printed tolerance treated as a certificate. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk listings from 20 October 2026 and did not time the sand in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A sauna hourglass here is a wall-mounted sand timer: a wooden frame, a glass tube, and sand that runs for a fixed stretch, almost always 15 minutes. It does not plug in, so it is not a BS 1363 question and not a UKCA question merely because it marks time. In Great Britain the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 still set the general safety duty. In Northern Ireland those 2005 regulations were superseded on 13 December 2024 by EU Regulation 2023/988. Refuse a kitchen or desk glass first, even when its sand also lasts a quarter of an hour. If the title does not say sauna, and the frame will not rotate on a wall, leave it.

Six checks before you pay

Buy 15 minutes unless you already want another length. TFA Dostmann's page for the 40.1001 calls about 15 minutes a maximum recommended stay, in beech, 52 × 33 × 286 mm and 235 g, with wall-mount parts, made in Germany. Do not merge that page with the amazon.co.uk bullets for B002O3W2MU, which also say "Made of plastic" and list 54 × 40 × 320 mm. Fifteen minutes is a timer length, not a health dose. Temple Lodge SAUST15 states 5- and 10-minute marks. Hojalis states 5, 10, and 15. Temple Lodge states 2 × 30 mm screws and also claims high-temperature adhesive, so use the screws. Adhesive alone is the claim to refuse, because a pad that lets go leaves the glass on the bench. Driving them into timber is on the how to use a sauna hourglass page. XLKJ states "accurate to 30 seconds". SuLiao and JUUDDENPARTS state ±10%. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, a tube that clogs in the sauna it was sold for is a returns problem.

What the price does not buy

On 20 October 2026 the kept amazon.co.uk listings sat between £8.49 and £19.99. VOSAREA was £19.99 with no star line, and nothing there shows a tighter tolerance than a cheaper glass. JUUDDENPARTS was £11.09, also unrated, and it states ±10%. SuLiao was £15.99 with 4.3 from 21 ratings, yet the written reviews are from the United States and several describe 20 or 30 minutes. Do not treat them as proof of this 15-minute UK title. Who each kept listing is for sits on the best sauna hourglass page.

Timer only, or a dial as well

Hojalis is the only kept set with a 0–120°C and 0–100% dial beside the hourglass. Buy it when you have no cabin thermometer and you will mount both on one wall. Skip it when you already read temperature elsewhere, or when you wanted sand and nothing else. The dial does not tighten the sand, and UK reviews on Hojalis include a clog. A working gauge and a stuck tube are separate faults. Every other kept listing is timer-only. After delivery, time one run against a clock you trust. If they disagree by more than you will accept, that gap is yours to see.

Common questions

What should a sauna hourglass listing say before you pay?
Look for sauna in the title, a 15-minute run unless you want another length, and screws with a frame that rotates. Printed 5- and 10-minute marks help if you leave early, though only some listings state them. Refuse a kitchen glass, adhesive as the only fixing, and any line that treats ±10% or "accurate to 30 seconds" as a tested certificate. We did not time the sand.
Is 15 minutes the only useful run time?
Fifteen minutes is the run these cabin glasses are built around. Buy it unless you already want another length. It is a timer setting, not a health dose. A page that calls 15 minutes optimum, or says a sand timer will stop you overheating, has not shown the evidence. If you need a time you can choose, a fixed glass is the wrong tool compared with a dial you set yourself.
Do you need screws, or is adhesive enough?
Take the screws. Temple Lodge SAUST15 states 2 × 30 mm screws and also claims high-temperature adhesive, so the screws are still the fixing to use. A pad on its own is the claim to refuse, because heat can let it go and the glass ends up off the wall. Adhesive printed next to screws does not replace them.
What does ±10% or "accurate to 30 seconds" mean?
Both lines are seller wording, not a result we retested. SuLiao and JUUDDENPARTS state ±10%, about a minute and a half either way on 15 minutes. XLKJ states "accurate to 30 seconds". The Advertising Standards Authority expects an accuracy claim to be substantiated before it is repeated as fact. Time one run against a clock you trust, and keep the gap you can see.
When is the Hojalis set the wrong buy?
Hojalis is the wrong buy when you already have a thermometer, or when you wanted sand and not a 0–120°C and 0–100% dial. It is the only kept set with that dial. The dial does not tighten the sand, and UK reviews on Hojalis include clogging, as they do on Temple Lodge, TFA 40.1001, and TIMCORR. If you need the gauge and accept that the tube can still stick, it matches. Otherwise buy timer-only.
