How to use a sauna headrest safely and comfortably

Updated: October 2026

You are about to lie back in a hot cabin, and the first use is when a sauna headrest is most likely to rock, catch your hair or lift your neck too sharply. The useful sequence is simple: put a towel on the bench, find a flat patch, lower your head by hand and remove the rest to dry afterwards. This guide covers that one-session routine. If you still need a suitable size or shape, begin with the [sauna headrest comparison](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-headrest) and the [sauna headrest buying guide](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-headrest/sub/sauna-headrest-buying-guide). For rooms that remain saturated rather than drying between sessions, use the [sauna headrest in a steam room](/hub/steam-baths/sauna-headrest/sub/sauna-headrest-steam-room) guide.

Towel first, then the rest

Place a clean sauna towel between your body and the bench before positioning the headrest. The towel is not a substitute for support, and the headrest does not replace the towel. Keep the fabric flat so a small wooden base is not balanced on a thick fold. Find a level patch with enough room for the base and your shoulders. The YUEHISY use note says to place its rotating rest on a stable plane, and a UK reviewer reports wobble when the bench is not level. Do not wedge a portable rest against a sloping backrest. A smaller disc can still rock on curved boards. Keep the rest away from the heater, guard and steam outlet. One installation note uses about 40 cm as a clearance point near a steam outlet. Follow your own cabin manufacturer's distances. If the rest rocks on a flat bench, do not screw it down.

Where your head actually sits

Set a curved slat with the concave face upwards. Sit down first, support the back of your head with one hand and lower the base of your skull onto the curve while your shoulders remain on the bench. Do not drop your head onto a hard oak disc. These accessories are not cervical treatment devices. Stop if you feel neck pain, tingling, dizziness or nausea, and leave the room rather than moving the rest. Turn a rotating disc while it is cool and unoccupied. A YUEHISY reviewer describes an accidental knock from the solid wood, so avoid rotating it under your full head weight. Tie long hair up and keep loose strands away from gaps. With mesh, check that it does not slide on the towel. Air a new cushion cold, and stop if a strong chemical smell appears when the room heats.

After the session: wipe, air and inspect

Lift the headrest off the bench after use rather than leaving it in a damp, closed cabin. For bare wood, use a damp, not soaking, cloth, then stand the item where air can reach it. Ventilate the cabin as the manufacturer directs. Do not varnish, oil or wax a bathing surface unless the maker specifies a sauna-safe treatment. Fine sanding along the grain is only for minor raised grain on sound bare timber. A cracked slat, loose rotating part or disputed material belongs with the seller. Follow the supplied care label for mesh or PE. Some non-UK REEZEIVI reviewers mention machine washing, but that instruction is not on the UK listing bullet. How wood and mesh differ is in wooden sauna headrest or mesh pillow.

When adjustment is not the answer

Stop using the rest if the base rocks on a level surface, a slat moves, the mechanism pinches, or the object does not match its material description. Photograph the fault before a repair. Sit up slowly and leave the cabin if you feel unwell. Seek medical advice for continuing neck symptoms rather than treating the product as a therapeutic device. Repeated mustiness or soft room timber is a cabin problem. Keep the accessory out of service and have the room checked.

Common questions

Do I put the towel under the headrest?
Put a clean towel between your body and the bench, keeping it flat around the headrest. The rest needs direct, stable support and should not balance on a rolled or bunched section. A separate thin washable layer over a hard rest is acceptable only if it cannot slip or catch in moving discs.
Which way up does a curved wooden rest go?
Use the concave curve upwards, with the broad stable base on the bench. Lower the base of your skull onto the curve by hand and keep your shoulders supported. If the product has several rotating faces, select one while it is cool and unloaded rather than turning it under your head.
What should I do with long hair?
Tie long hair up before entering the cabin and keep it clear of gaps, discs and hinges. A UK YUEHISY review specifically reports hair catching in the rotating format. If your hairstyle cannot be secured comfortably, choose a simple fixed slat or cushion without moving gaps.
Can I varnish a wooden headrest?
Do not apply ordinary varnish, oil or wax to a sauna-contact surface. Heat can make an unsuitable finish unpleasant, and sealing can interfere with drying. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. For slight raised grain on sound bare wood, specialist care guidance suggests fine sanding along the grain instead.
How soon should I remove it after a session?
Remove it when the session ends and the cabin is safe to enter for normal care. Wipe it as directed and stand or hang it where air reaches all sides. Leaving a rest flat on a damp bench in a closed room slows both surfaces from drying.
When should I stop using the headrest?
Stop for rocking, loose or cracked parts, pinching gaps, a strong persistent chemical smell or a material that differs from the listing. Also stop and leave the sauna if you feel dizzy, nauseous, numb or in pain. Do not adjust through a physical warning or a product fault.
