Install a 4.5kW sauna heater in the UK

Updated: October 2026

The heater is on the floor and the next temptation is a 13 A lead. A 4.5 kW sauna heater draws about 19–20 A, so that lead is the wrong picture. You can prepare the room. A competent electrician connects the heater, and a plumber connects steam. This page is that brief for anyone about to install a 4.5kW sauna heater UK-side. It is not a cable recipe. The product table is the [4.5kW sauna heater comparison](/hub/steam-baths/4-5kw-sauna-heater). We read the listings and public UK sources on 19 October 2026 and did not install a unit. Why this is not a socket

Divide 4,500 watts by a nominal 230 V and you land near 20 A. SaunaShop's supply note puts 4.5 kW at about 19 A. A BS 1363 plug is built for 13 A. None of the Caiqinlen, LANYU, BGAZA, CGOLDENWALL or Hanchen listings states that a UK plug is in the box. Treat every one of them as hard-wired. The circuit is new work on a spare way, not a spur off the bathroom ring. Cable size and breaker come from the plate, the run and BS 7671. Steam adds a second trade, which a stone stove does not. The BGAZA is a wall bracket and a cable. The other four are boilers that need a cold feed and a pipe to a head. Confirm which machine you bought on the steam generator versus sauna heater page before you book only an electrician.

What you notify in England and Wales

In England and Wales, a new circuit is notifiable building work, and so is work in a room containing a sauna heater. Approved Document P and regulation 6 of the Building Regulations 2010 (as amended, SI 2012/3119) are the public references your building-control body and your electrician already use. The usual route is an electrician who can self-certify under a competent-person scheme and give you a certificate. If they cannot, you notify building control before the work starts. Do not let a manual's phrase minor works talk you out of that. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not covered by Approved Document P. You still want a competent person and a record of the work.

The brief for the electrician

Hand over the model, the selected kilowatts, and a photograph of the data plate. The CGOLDENWALL listing says 220 V in one place and 380 V in a pattern field. The BGAZA and the LANYU state no voltage. The Caiqinlen and the Hanchen state 220 V. A normal UK board is 230 V nominal single phase. Ask them to price the circuit, the isolation and the certificate. Confirm the 4.5 kW option, not a 6 kW twin on the same page, in the 4.5kW sauna heater buying guide.

The brief for the plumber

Skip this section if you bought the BGAZA stone stove. There is no steam pipe. For the Caiqinlen, LANYU, CGOLDENWALL and Hanchen, the generator normally lives outside the steam room, in a cupboard or beside a basin, with access left for the tank. A plumber runs a cold feed with a stop valve, and a steam line to the head, in material the manual allows. Use that model's manual, not a neighbour's. Agree the drain before the cupboard is closed. The CGOLDENWALL listing mentions a descaler port and a self-drain, and the LANYU mentions a magnesium rod. Hard water will block a neglected boiler.

Stop and call someone

Stop if a breaker trips as soon as the heater is enabled, if you smell burning insulation, or if water appears from a place that is not the drain. On the CGOLDENWALL, an Italian review described the element continuing to heat after shutdown until the safety valve vented. If a valve dumps water or steam after you have switched the unit off, isolate the circuit and call the electrician and the seller.

Common questions

Can I install a 4.5 kW heater myself?
You can prepare the room, the route and the briefing notes. The electrical connection belongs to a competent electrician, because this is a new circuit in a special location, not a plug-in appliance. Steam pipework belongs to a plumber working to that model's manual. UK supplier guides, including Vidalux, tell owners the same thing in plain language.
Is a new circuit notifiable?
In England and Wales, yes. A new circuit, and electrical work for a room with a sauna heater, is notifiable under the building regulations. An electrician registered with a competent-person scheme can self-certify and issue the certificate. Otherwise you notify building control first. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own building rules, so the paperwork is local even though the need for a competent installer is not.
Does the heater need its own RCD?
Not automatically. Installer Online notes an exception for the sauna heater circuit unless the manufacturer requires RCD protection, and socket outlets are kept out of the sauna room. The electrician applies BS 7671 to the plate and the room. Ask them what they will fit and why, rather than buying a device before the design exists.
What do I ask the electrician to bring to the quote?
The model and a photo of the data plate, especially if the listing conflicts, as the CGOLDENWALL's 220 V and 380 V lines do. Ask for a price that includes isolation, the circuit from a spare way, and the certificate. Mention the run length. Elec-Mate's £400–£550 figure is only a guide for a short circuit and excludes the heater and the cabin.
What does the plumber do on a steam generator?
They connect a cold feed with a stop valve and a steam pipe to the head, with the generator outside the room where you can still reach it. Material, diameter and slope come from that unit's manual. Living House's own guide bars a U in the steam pipe so condensate drains back. Drain access and descaling should be part of the same conversation.
Why must the steam pipe not form a U?
Condensate collects in a dip and can spit, block the pipe or stress the boiler. Living House's deluxe manual, written for its 4.5 kW generator, tells the fitter to avoid a U so water runs back to the generator. Apply that rule only when your manual says the same. Do not borrow that brand's pressure rating for a different Amazon model.
