Sauna heater installation UK

Updated: October 2026

The bracket is the small part of the job. You can picture the holes in the wall, and a listing may even claim the stove hangs in minutes, but the circuit in a room that contains a sauna heater is a special location. This page is about sauna heater installation UK rules in plain language: what you may fix mechanically, what you book, and where you stop if the manual is missing. It does not size the cable. Which stove you bought, and what it costs, stays on the [230V sauna heater comparison](/hub/steam-baths/230v-sauna-heater). We did not install a stove. What you can do and what you book

You can measure the hot room, clear the floor, and read the manual before anyone drills. You do not design the circuit from a product bullet that says easy to install. Both Mxmoonant listings say there is no plug and that a licensed electrician should do the wiring. The HUUM listing excludes the main power cable as well. Book a competent electrician for the supply. In England, a new circuit is notifiable building work, and a room containing a sauna heater is named as a special location. Hanging a stove on fixings the manual shows is a mechanical job you might do once the supply exists. Creating that supply, choosing the protective device, and signing the certificate are not a weekend task you learn from the bullet points. The current limit that makes a plug the wrong connector is on the plug or hardwire page.

England, Wales, and the other nations

Approved Document P, the building regulation for electrical safety in dwellings, applies in England. The IET's Part P material, in the notes we used, covers England and Wales. A new circuit is notifiable. Do not assume a previous owner's heater was installed in a way you should copy. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not covered by that English document. They have their own building standards. Ask a local electrician which notification route applies, and do not quote an English building-control form as if it were universal. What you should keep, wherever you are in the UK, is the Electrical Installation Certificate the electrician issues, plus the heater manual and the building-control paperwork if the work was notified.

Zones, heat, and sockets

BS 7671 Section 703 is the wiring-regulation section for a room with a sauna heater. In the plain-language guides electricians publish, zone 1 is the volume around the heater out to 0.5 m. Only the heater and the equipment that belongs to it go there. Zone 3 is the remaining hot volume those guides describe, with cable insulation they describe as needing to withstand 170 °C, and equipment at least IPX4. Socket-outlets are not installed in the location that contains the heater. That is why a 230 V title still does not end with a lead you plug in beside the benches. Guides disagree on whether the heater circuit itself should have a 30 mA RCD. Some makers advise against one because of nuisance tripping, and some electricians still want additional protection. We will not tell you to omit an RCD or to add one. The manual and the electrician decide.

Height and clearances follow the manual

Mounting height is not one number for this category. In the listings we compared, Anjur and the template pages say about 18 cm from the ground. The Generic page at £199 says about 10 cm above the floor. Copying 18 cm onto a HUUM Hive, or 10 cm onto an Mxmoonant, is how a stove ends up inside the wrong clearance. Stop if the manual is not in the box. The Alvinlite review in this set says there were no instructions and that a corner arrived damaged, while the buyer was trying to wire the stove. That is the moment to use the returns route, not to hunt a diagram for a different brand. A dented case, which one Mxmoonant review reports, is the same kind of stop until you know the inner shell is intact.

Common questions

Can you install a 230 V sauna heater yourself?
You might fix the stove to the wall if the manual shows the holes and the supply is already in place and certified. You do not design or connect a new circuit yourself from the listing. In England that new circuit is notifiable, and the room is a special location. The listings in this set that mention wiring point you to an electrician.
Is a new sauna circuit notifiable in England?
Yes. Approved Document P treats a new circuit as notifiable, and it treats a room containing a sauna heater as a special location. The person who does the work should be able to notify it and give you a certificate. A previous heater in the same corner does not cancel that duty.
What are the sauna zones in plain language?
Zone 1 is the space from the heater out to about 0.5 m, and only the heater and its own equipment belong there. The wider hot zone is where guides call for cable that can stand high temperature and for equipment rated at least IPX4. Your electrician applies BS 7671 Section 703 to the actual room. This page is not a zone drawing you can build from.
Can you put a socket in the sauna room?
No. Socket-outlets are not installed in the location that contains the sauna heater. That is one reason these stoves are hardwired rather than plugged into a lead beside the door. A socket outside the room does not make a 6 kW stove into a 13 A appliance.
What certificate should you keep?
Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate, the notification record if the work was notifiable, and the heater manual. You will want all three if you sell the house or if a later fault has to be traced. A screenshot of the amazon listing is not a certificate.
