Electric stapler buying guide: choose the right desk model

Updated: October 2026

You have a pile of letters to staple, you want the motor to remove the squeeze, and three listings all describe themselves as "heavy duty". An electric stapler buying guide should make the differences clearer before you choose a colour or trust the largest sheet number. Start with the job, then check the stated paper weight, staple code, power supply and box contents. Our [electric stapler comparison](/hub/staplers-and-nail-guns/electric-stapler) holds the current amazon.co.uk listings and prices. This guide explains which claims can genuinely be compared, and whether a compact automatic belongs on your desk.

What an electric stapler means here

The machines covered here are automatic desk staplers for paper. You slide a stack into the mouth, a sensor starts the cycle, and an anvil beneath the paper bends the staple legs closed. That is different from an electric staple gun, which normally drives a staple into fabric or timber without clinching it beneath a letter. The practical dividing line is not the phrase "heavy duty". It is whether the machine is built for ordinary paper on a desk, names the paper weight behind its capacity, and uses a staple you can identify. If the job is upholstery, noticeboards or timber, use electric stapler versus staple gun. A Rapid 105E belongs to a heavier 230 V office class: 50 sheets of 80 gsm, 66/6–8 mm staples and 4.13 kg. That is a different purchase, not a stronger colour of the same compact.

Three classes, then the checks that matter

First decide between a manual desk stapler, a compact automatic and a heavier mains office machine. A manual model needs no batteries or cable and is adequate when stacks are infrequent and comfortable to squeeze. A compact automatic earns its space when you want repeated stapling without pressing a handle. Check the sheet claim together with paper weight. "15 sheets of 80 gsm" is a defined condition. "30 sheets" without a gsm figure is a less complete promise. In 26/6 and 24/6, the second number is the 6 mm leg length. The first distinguishes wire thickness, and the lower number is the thicker wire. Follow the code named for the machine rather than reading "24" as a 24 mm leg. A supplied USB cable is not a UK mains plug. A mains adapter for domestic use in Britain should have a BS 1363 plug, or an appropriate fused conversion plug. A mention of adapter operation does not prove the adapter is in the box.

What the compact listings actually state

The Rapesco 626EL states up to 15 sheets of 80 gsm using 26/6 staples. Powder blue, clear and black are the same mechanism. Each includes a USB cable and 1,000 staples. Four AA cells and a mains USB charger are extra. The two-year line is tied to using Rapesco staples. The Eagle EG-1610BA states up to 20 sheets and accepts both 24/6 and 26/6, without a paper weight. It can use an AC adapter or four AA cells, not both at once. The material field says UK adapter, while the included-components list is absent. The listing bullets do not promise a box of staples. EcoElectronix EX-25 listings state 30 sheets and a full-strip magazine. Neither the paper weight nor the staple code is named. The white and black listings list an AC adapter. The red listing mentions adapter operation in its bullets but does not list one under included components. The warranty field says "No warranty", while a black-listing bullet claims a limited lifetime warranty. Treat that conflict as something to resolve with the seller. When a compact is the wrong purchase

If 15 sheets of 80 gsm covers your usual stack, compare Rapesco colour prices rather than paying more for the same mechanism. If you want 24/6 and 26/6 both named, check the Eagle box before you assume the adapter and the staples are inside. If you are buying the 30-sheet claim, choose the EcoElectronix colour that lists the adapter, and confirm the staple with the seller. Leave this class for fabric, timber, a heavier 230 V machine, or a few comfortable stacks each week, where a manual stapler is the simpler tool.

Common questions

How many sheets will an electric stapler take?
Use the claim only with its stated conditions. Rapesco specifies 15 sheets of 80 gsm. Eagle says 20 sheets and EcoElectronix 30, and those two listings do not state gsm. Card, photographs and covers are not automatically equivalent to ordinary copier paper, so reduce the stack when the material is heavier.
Are 26/6 and 24/6 staples the same?
No. Both have a 6 mm leg, but 24/6 uses thicker wire than 26/6. The Rapesco 626EL names 26/6, while Eagle names 24/6 and 26/6. Use the manufacturer's listed code rather than assuming equal leg length makes them interchangeable.
Does a USB cable count as a UK plug?
No. The Rapesco includes a USB Type-A cable, but you still need a suitable mains USB charger or four AA batteries. The maker's instructions prefer a mains USB plug to a computer port. Do not push the stapler body into a wall socket.
Can Eagle's adapter and AA batteries run together?
The Eagle listing says to use the AC adapter or four AA cells, not both together. Batteries are not included. The material field mentions a UK adapter, but the included-components list is absent, so confirm the current box.
Are staples included with Eagle or EcoElectronix?
Their listing bullets do not clearly state that staples are included. Each Rapesco 626EL listing includes 1,000 of 26/6. Treat an ambiguous fasteners field as insufficient evidence of box contents, and confirm the code before you add a refill to the order.
What if the stapler fails after a few months?
Contact the retailer with your order details and the fault. A listing warranty and your legal rights are separate. UK rights for faulty goods can still apply when a product page says "No warranty". Do not dismantle the adapter or the stapler housing.
