How to use a soldering iron kit on the first session

Updated: 21 October 2026

Using a soldering iron kit safely is mostly sequence: where you work, how you tin the tip, how long you stay on the joint, and what you do with the pump when the joint is wrong. This is a first session for a hobby board or a loose wire you can unplug, not house wiring. If the cable is part of a fixed mains circuit, stop and call a competent electrician. The tools these steps assume are compared on the [soldering iron set comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/soldering-iron-set). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the bench up before you plug in

Park the stand where your arm rests the iron, with slack in the cable. Reviewers of the dearer HANDSKIT L series say the stand tips. If yours rocks, use a heavier stand. OIDJK states 580 g. Do not breathe rosin fume. HSE leaflet INDG249 says to reduce exposure, and a window plus a fan that pulls fume off your face is the household version. YIHUA states 230 V and Type G. WEP states 220–240 V and Type G, and says not to use 110 V. Several pens never state the plug. Do not improvise a loose adaptor on a hot tool. If the tube does not name the alloy, set it aside. Beizkna, OIDJK and YIHUA name lead-free wire.

Heat, tin, then make one joint

Plug in only when the iron is in the holder. As a rule of thumb, small lead-free joints are often made around 320–380 °C, then you leave the pad. The top of these scales is headroom, not a start. Change the tip before you chase the number, which is the HANDSKIT comment about 12 AWG cable. Tin the tip once it will melt solder. A YIHUA buyer was told to tin at 250 °C and had to calibrate first. Both HANDSKIT models offer a ±99 °C offset. Feed solder onto the joint, not onto the iron. A good joint goes shiny and concave in a second or two. HANDSKIT pens show three dashes after 15 minutes. The tip can still burn you. Tin the tip, unplug, and let it cool before you close a case. Plug lines are in the buying guide.

Use the pump on a bad joint

Heat the joint until the solder is liquid, seat the pump, and release the plunger. You usually need two or three cycles. If the hole stays blocked, add fresh solder and try again. HANDSKIT L series reviewers describe a pump clearing holes braid would not. If the nozzle is chewed, replace the pump rather than leaning on the board. Braid is kinder on surface-mount pads, and most of these kits do not include it. Side cutters are for component leads. One HANDSKIT reviewer snapped them. If they feel soft, stop.

Know when to stop

Stop when the job leaves hobby electronics. Fixed wiring, a burning smell from the handle, a lead hot near the plug, or a glowing element are not technique. YEEHONEC reviews include a handle that glowed and a hot-air gun that stayed on in sleep. Return a tool that does that. Do not open it and keep soldering.

Common questions

How do I use the desoldering pump in the kit?
Heat the joint until the solder is liquid, seat the nozzle against it, and fire the plunger once. Repeat rather than holding the iron on the pad for ten seconds. If nothing moves, add a little fresh solder and flux, then pump again. Let the board cool between attempts. The pump removes through-hole solder. It is a clumsy tool on fine surface-mount pads, where braid is usually kinder.
What temperature should I set?
Start in the low-to-mid 300s Celsius for small lead-free joints, and lower if you know the wire is leaded. Leave the pad as soon as the solder has wetted. The 480 °C end of a HANDSKIT or YIHUA scale is for difficult joints and a suitable tip, not the default. If the screen and the joint disagree, calibrate if the iron offers an offset, or accept that a cheap display is approximate. Beizkna reviewers were unsure the number matched the tip.
Why does my iron sleep or show dashes?
On the HANDSKIT pens, three dashes mean it has been left for about 15 minutes and heating has paused. Press a button to wake it. WEP and YIHUA have their own timers. The tip may still be hot. Sleep is there to limit an iron you forgot, not to tell you the tool is cold. Do not pack it away until it has cooled with the plug out.
Can I learn on a circuit board?
Yes, on a scrap board or a cheap kit you can afford to ruin, with the device unplugged and any battery removed. Practise wetting one pad before you touch a working repair. A large iron tip will bridge fine pads. Fit a smaller tip, or move the work to a station you can control, rather than turning the temperature to the maximum. Household mains wiring is not the practice piece.
What if the stand will not stay upright?
Stop using it as a stand. Reviewers of one HANDSKIT kit say it tips, and a tipping stand is how an iron meets a cable or a curtain. Use a heavier holder, or a kit whose stand is actually massive, such as the OIDJK stand stated at 580 g, after you have checked that listing's plug. Do not balance the iron on the sponge.
When should a professional take over?
When the circuit is fixed house wiring, when you cannot prove the supply is dead, or when the iron itself smells of burning, shocks you, or glows. Commercial fume control is also outside a kitchen-table fan. A hobby kit does not make those jobs safe because the box included tweezers.
