How to choose an ESAB welding helmet

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are comparing ESAB auto-darkening helmets on amazon.co.uk and deciding whether to stop at a Savage A41 or stretch to a Sentinel A60 before you add anything to the basket. The four kept listings in the [ESAB welding helmet comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/esab-welding-helmet) run from about £125 for the black A41 to about £799 for an A60 Air kit titled with an EPR-X1. Those are different jobs, not a single best row. This page walks shade, window, sensors, weight, and marks, and only then the separate fume question.

Match shade to your welding

An auto-darkening filter stays light so you can see the joint, then darkens on the arc. ESAB describes roughly shade 3 or 4 while you line up and about 9–13 once you are welding. HSE does not give one UK shade for every amp. The A41 listings use DIN 8–13, which suits routine MIG and stick and misses shade 5 TIG. The A60 at about £310 lists DIN 3/5–13 in half steps. Both A41 rows name external grind at shade 4. The A60 describes a grind LED. Never strike an arc in grind mode. Setup is on the shade and grind page.

Window size and optical class

A larger cartridge shows more of the joint and the gun, and it costs more. ESAB UK quotes about 118 × 71 mm on the A60 and 100 × 50 mm on the A41. The A60 amazon table gives 4.65 × 2.80 in. Compare in one unit. A trade table lists the A41 at optical class 1/1/1/2 and the A60 at 1/1/1/1. The black A41 listing does not print those digits, so a blank field is not proof the mark is missing. Check the shell on delivery. True colour, OpTCS on the A60, changes how the puddle looks. It is not a second shade scale. The price fork on window and shade is on Savage A41 vs Sentinel A60.

Sensors, sensitivity, and delay

Four arc sensors help when the arc sits partly out of view. They do not stop a flash in grind mode or through a cover blinded by paint. ESAB UK states 0.07 ms for the A41 and 0.04 ms for the A60. The A60 listing says 0.08 ms. Do not average those lines. Sensitivity set too high triggers on shop lights. Set too low and a low-amp TIG bead leaves the lens light. The black A41 mentions sensitivity and does not state delay. The A60 names internal sensitivity, delay, shade lock, and nine memories. ESAB’s UK delay band is about 0.1–0.9 s. Lengthen it when the cooling pool still glares.

Headgear, covers, and listed weight

The black A41 includes two spare outer lenses. The yellow package at about £135 adds MIG gloves and a sweatband for roughly £10 more. It is the same DIN 8–13 filter, not a different engine, and it does not print a sensor count. The A60 listing includes the helmet and batteries. Budget for cover plates anyway. Weights conflict. The black A41 is 800 g on amazon.co.uk and about 500 g on ESAB UK. The A60 is 453.59 g on the listing and about 644 g on ESAB UK. Try the helmet on. Comfort is headgear and shift length, not the lighter number from one site.

Marks, UK supply, and fume

Look for EN 379, or the EN ISO 16321 code ESAB prints on UK pages, plus EN 175 on the shell. From 1 January 2025, PPE newly placed on the Great Britain market is UKCA marked, with Northern Ireland and pre-2025 stock exceptions in HSE guidance. The A60 UK page lists UKCA. The A41 material used here did not. That is not proof your unit lacks the mark. Check it on delivery. A helmet purchase does not replace a fume assessment. Mild steel welding fume is treated as a carcinogen with no known safe level, and general ventilation is not enough indoors. A standard A41 or A60 protects eyes and face. It does not extract fume. When exposure remains after local exhaust, read when you need an ESAB air-fed welding helmet.

Common questions

Does the A41 on amazon.co.uk go low enough for TIG at low amps?
The kept A41 listings start at DIN 8, not shade 5. For low-amp TIG, the Sentinel A60 is the kept shell that lists DIN 3/5–13 in half steps.
How much does viewing area matter between A41 and A60?
It matters out of position, when you want the gun and the fit-up without moving your head. ESAB UK quotes about 118 × 71 mm on the A60 and 100 × 50 mm on the A41. Pay that gap only if the process uses it.
Are four sensors worth paying for on ESAB helmets?
Four sensors are named on the black A41 and the A60. They help on awkward joints. They do not fix grind mode left on or a dirty cover. The yellow listing does not print a sensor count.
What should I check on marks such as EN 379, EN 175, and UKCA?
Check the filter and shell marks on the product and the paperwork, especially if the online table is sparse. UKCA timing follows HSE guidance for Great Britain, including Northern Ireland and pre-2025 stock.
Why do amazon weights disagree with ESAB UK?
The black A41 is 800 g on amazon.co.uk and about 500 g on ESAB UK. The A60 is 453.59 g on the listing and about 644 g on ESAB UK. Try the helmet on rather than buying the lighter number.
Does buying ESAB on amazon.co.uk replace a fume assessment?
No. Eye protection and fume control are separate. Local exhaust comes first indoors, then respiratory protection when fume remains. The air-fed row at about £799 is that second step, and only with the matched blower.
