Moss lawn or shade grass seed in the UK?

Updated: October 2026

The moss beneath a wall or tree may already be doing the job that grass cannot: covering damp, dark soil with something green. Choosing a moss lawn in shade in the UK is sensible where foot traffic is light and the conditions stay unsuitable for turf. Shade grass seed is the better route when the plot receives usable light, drainage is sound, and you can prepare a real seedbed. Before you buy from the [shade grass seed comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/shade-grass-seed), decide whether you want to change the conditions or work with them. When moss is the lawn

Moss is not automatically a lawn defect. The RHS says it can be accepted as cover where grass struggles, particularly in damp shade. If the area is evenly covered, lightly used and stays cool and moist, keeping it may be the lowest-effort decision. Killing it to expose bare soil does not create the light grass needs. BBC Gardeners’ World describes moss as suited to shade, moisture and roughly pH 5–7, and poor for heavy wear or hot sun. It is a bad surface for football, regular dog running or the path to a shed. Do not take moss from woodland. Encourage what is already there, or buy from a responsible supplier. If moss returns after raking, the cause may be shade, waterlogging, compaction or close mowing. Change that only if you can actually improve the site.

When grass is still worth sowing

Choose grass where the patch has light or medium shade rather than permanent darkness. The RHS says most turf wants about four to six hours of full sun. Morning sun, filtered light or a leafless spring window can be a realistic seedbed. Dense evergreen cover is not fixed by a dearer bag. Grass is stronger where the surface must take moderate walking or join an existing lawn. Fine fescues are the usual shade grasses. Turf ryegrass adds wear and needs more light. Look for a named recipe and a coverage figure in the shade grass seed buying guide. Remove loose moss so seed reaches soil, then sow in September to November or March to April. Preparation is in how to sow grass seed in shade. Under trees, use grass seed under trees before you scarify.

When another bag will not help

Stop buying seed when the site stays deeply shaded all day and you cannot safely improve the light. Two fair sowings that fail under the same conditions tell you more than switching bags. Moss, shade-tolerant groundcover or a mulched bed is then the more durable cover. Waterlogging is the other stop. Seed that rots in saturated soil is not rescued by a faster-germination claim or a gel coat. Chemical moss control is not the first answer while shade and damp stay unchanged. The RHS notes that moss returns when the conditions still favour it.

Artificial grass, and the choice to make

Artificial grass still needs a draining base and regular cleaning. Where appearance matters more than wear, living moss can be the more proportionate cover. Heavy traffic wants a path or stepping stones. Keep moss if the bed is dark, damp and lightly used. Sow shade grass if you can give turf roughly the light it needs, clear thatch, keep the seed moist and mow higher afterwards. If neither surface can take the use, redesign the area. The table is the grass option only after you have decided the site can support a lawn.

Common questions

Is moss in a shady lawn a problem?
Not necessarily. Moss can provide green cover where grass performs poorly, especially in damp shade with little foot traffic. It becomes a practical problem when you need a hard-wearing surface, or when it signals waterlogging that affects the wider garden.
Should I kill moss before sowing grass?
Remove loose moss and thatch so seed can touch soil, and correct the reason moss dominates before you reseed. If shade, close mowing or poor drainage stays unchanged, moss is likely to return. A moss killer alone does not create a viable seedbed.
When is grass the better choice?
Grass is better where the area receives light or medium shade, drains adequately and must tolerate more wear than moss. Use a shade-appropriate mix, sow in season and keep the established lawn slightly longer. Permanent deep shade is outside what a seed mix can solve.
Can I collect moss from a wood?
No. Do not harvest moss from woodland or other wild places. That can damage habitat and may breach landowner rules. Encourage moss already in your garden, or obtain cultivated material from a responsible supplier.
Will a better shade seed beat deep shade?
No. A named fescue-led mix may perform better than a general lawn seed in light or medium shade, and it still needs daylight. If the ground remains dark all day, changing the product is unlikely to change the outcome.
Is artificial grass better than moss?
Not automatically. Artificial grass needs a sound, draining base and ongoing cleaning. Moss is living cover suited to damp shade and light use. If the site is waterlogged, assess the drainage before you install any surface.
Who should assess a waterlogged shaded lawn?
Call a drainage or landscaping professional when water stands after ordinary rain, flows towards a building or repeatedly kills new seed. If large tree roots are involved, an arborist may also be needed. These are site problems, not reasons to buy another bag.
