How to sow grass seed in shade

Updated: October 2026

You can spread a good seed mix over a shady patch and still see bare soil three weeks later if the ground was cold, the seed rested on thatch, or the surface dried out. Learning how to sow grass seed in shade is mainly about timing and contact with soil, not extra seed to compensate for a poor seedbed. Choose the bag and the packet rate from the [shade grass seed comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/shade-grass-seed), then follow one careful sowing rather than scattering handfuls again. The aim is a moist, lightly covered seedbed in a suitable UK window. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When shaded soil is warm enough

The RHS recommends sowing a lawn from seed in September to November or March to April. Shady soil warms later in spring and cools earlier in autumn than an open lawn. RHS October guidance uses about 7°C as a minimum soil temperature. Use a soil thermometer a few centimetres down in the patch, not on a sunny patio. If a north-facing bed is already below about 7°C in late October, store the seed dry and wait for spring. Avoid frozen ground and a dry spell you cannot water through. If the site is under a deciduous canopy, sowing while the branches are leafless gives seedlings more light. Root competition is covered in grass seed under trees.

How to get seed onto soil

Remove leaves, loose moss and dead thatch so you can see soil. Rake firmly on an ordinary shaded patch, and more gently around surface tree roots. If the ground is compacted, use a garden fork only where there are no major roots. Measure the area and weigh the seed at the packet rate. Do not invent a rate where the listing prints no coverage. Lawns Direct gives no square-metre figure in the captured data. Published rates such as 35 g/m² belong to particular mixes. Divide the measured seed in half, walk one half in strips and the other at right angles, then rake lightly and firm. Seed left on moss or thatch dries and stays available to birds.

Water, birds and the first cut

Water with a fine spray straight after sowing so you do not wash seed into channels. Keep the surface moist, including shaded corners. Standing water is a drainage problem, and more seed will not fix it. Birds can take visible seed. The RHS suggests horticultural fleece, secured and removed as seedlings emerge, or raising the packet rate by about half where birds are a serious problem. A coloured coat is easier to see and is not a barrier. Keep people and pets off until seedlings are rooted. Make the first cut only when the mower removes no more than roughly the upper third, and keep a higher height in shade. Do not use leftover high-nitrogen summer feed in autumn. RHS guidance for shaded lawns favours a potassium-richer autumn feed before leaf fall.

When two weeks of nothing is not a verdict

The RHS says lawn seed often germinates in seven to ten days, while some specialist shade sellers quote 14–21 days. UKgrow prints a five-to-seven-day claim, and reviews in this category also report no growth after two or three weeks. Cool shaded soil can delay emergence. Count from a prepared, watered sowing, not from seed thrown onto an old lawn. After two weeks, look for fine shoots before you reseed. If the ground is still warm and seed is present, keep watering gently. If seed rotted in waterlogged soil, fix drainage first. If it stayed on thatch, repair the seedbed. Permanent deep shade, standing water and dense roots are conditions, not product faults. The shade grass seed buying guide checks the mix. Then consider moss or grass in shade.

Common questions

When should I sow shade grass seed in the UK?
Aim for September to November or March to April, if the soil in the shaded patch is warm enough and not waterlogged. About 7°C is a useful minimum from RHS October guidance. A late-October north-facing bed may already be too cold when an open lawn still feels mild.
How deep should grass seed sit?
Seed needs firm contact with soil and only a light covering from raking. Do not leave it on moss or thatch, and do not bury it under a thick layer. Where a product gives a method, the packet takes priority.
How often should I water new seed in shade?
Often enough to keep the surface moist without puddles or washing seed downhill. Frequency depends on rain, wind, soil and temperature, so inspect the seedbed. Established grass later wants deeper, less frequent watering.
How can I protect seed from birds?
Rake and firm the seed into the soil, then use secured horticultural fleece if birds persist. Remove it as seedlings emerge, and avoid loose netting that can trap wildlife. A coloured coating helps you see distribution. It does not guarantee protection.
When can I mow the new grass?
Wait until seedlings are rooted and tall enough that you remove no more than the upper third with sharp blades. Keep shaded grass slightly longer than an open lawn. Close cutting reduces the leaf that limited light can use.
Should I use summer lawn feed in October?
No. The RHS advises against leftover summer feed in October. If you feed, use an autumn formulation richer in potassium and follow its label. Fertiliser does not replace light, preparation or drainage.
