How to choose grass seed

Updated: October 2026

A family lawn, a fine lawn, a shady patch, and a horse paddock are different purchases, even when every amazon.co.uk title says grass seed. How to choose grass seed, in this set of twelve, follows a short order: the job, whether the listing names the grasses, a coverage figure you can divide, then season, site, and price per stated square metre. The [grass seed comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/grass-seed) keeps the twelve-row table. Shelf prices are GBP figures from amazon.co.uk. We updated this guide in October 2026 and did not run a germination trial. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the star rating

Stars in this set sit in a narrow band, mostly 4.2 to 4.3, so they do not separate a play lawn from a paddock. A family lawn is the surface people walk. A fine lawn is slower and less tough, and you keep off it while it is young. Light shade still receives daylight under a tree or beside a wall. A patch is a few square metres, not a whole garden. A paddock is ground for horses or ponies. In this set that job is Lawns Direct EquiGrass 5 kg at £34.52, described as clover-free and tetraploid-free. It is not a garden-lawn recommendation, and a domestic mix is not a reason to call seed safe for horses. Pet friendly on a title is not a feeding test. A hardwearing title is still not a species list.

Ask whether the listing names the grasses

The Royal Horticultural Society treats a sensible ryegrass buy as a named turf or fine ryegrass, not an unnamed agricultural type. You can apply that check only when the listing names the grasses. Miracle-Gro multi-purpose 5 kg at £28.94 and the 500 g box at £7.90 both name ryegrass and fescue. ProGrass fine turf 2 kg at £17.59 is typed as fescue. ProGrass hardwearing 2 kg at £13.99, ProGrass shade 1 kg at £12.79, GroundMaster, the Gro-Sure 300 g box, Gro-Sure Smart 10 kg, EverGreen Fast Grass 480 g, and UKGROW do not name the mix on the facts used here. An unnamed bag can still be grass seed. You cannot check the coarse-ryegrass warning from the listing, or tell a family mix from a fine one by the word hardwearing alone.

Divide the printed area, and discard a figure you cannot use

A coverage line helps only when it matches the job. GroundMaster’s 1.5 kg bag at £14.99 states up to 90 m² for overseeding, about 17p per stated square metre. That figure is not a new-lawn rate. The RHS repair page usually cites about 15–25 g/m². Rolawn cites about 23 g/m² for overseeding and about 35 g/m² on bare patches. Those are rules of thumb, not measurements of these packets. When a bag prints its own rate, follow that rate. The Gro-Sure 300 g box is £7 for 10 m², about 70p, and 30% EF is not explained. Miracle-Gro 500 g is about 46p for about 17 m². The shady 840 g box is £15.99 for 28 m², about 57p. The 5 kg bag is about 18p for up to 165 m². Gro-Sure Smart is £56.70 with 250 m² in the title, about 23p. Use 250 m², not a car-parking comparison. Fast Grass at £7.67 and the three ProGrass lawn bags state no coverage. UKGROW at £4.99 says 100 g in the title and 5,000 g in a unit-count field, so there is no usable area.

Then check the season, the site, and the price per stated square metre

The RHS windows we used are September to November or March to April, with early autumn preferred. Do not sow in a hot dry spell. Moisture, birds, and the first cut are on how to sow grass seed. A shade title still needs light. Deep shade is a different plant. About 18p per stated square metre on the 5 kg bag beats about 46p on the 500 g box only if you will use a large family area. The two sizes share 4.3 from 331 reviews, and three Lawns Direct lawn styles share review text in the same way. None of these files shows a certification label. In England and Wales, fodder grasses must be certified before they are marketed. A shortlist with a reason to skip each pick is on best grass seed UK.

Common questions

What should I decide before I compare prices?
Decide the job, then whether the listing names the grasses, then whether a printed area matches that job. A rating near 4.2 is a weak tie-break. Sorting by the lowest shelf price first will make a conflicting 100 g title look cheaper than a bag you can divide into the lawn.
Does a hardwearing title mean the bag names the grasses?
No. ProGrass hardwearing 2 kg at £13.99 lists full sun or partial sun, but the facts used here do not name ryegrass, fescue, or bent. GroundMaster’s hard-wearing title also leaves the species unnamed. The title tells you the intended wear. It does not let you check a coarse-ryegrass warning.
How do I use a coverage figure without mixing up a new lawn and an overseed?
Read the words beside the square metres. GroundMaster’s up to 90 m² is for overseeding, so that rate does not belong on bare soil. If the packet prints its own rate, follow the packet. The published gram figures are a check, not a test of these bags.
Why is the cheap UKGROW listing not a usable area?
UKGROW is the lowest shelf price here at £4.99 and is presented as a 100 g patch product. The same listing also reports a 5,000 g unit count, so the quantity fields cannot all describe one packet. There is no coverage figure and no named mix. It may suit a tiny repair if you check what arrives. It is not a basis for costing a whole lawn.
Are the two Miracle-Gro multi-purpose sizes different products in the reviews?
The bags differ in size. Both name ryegrass and fescue, and both show 4.3 from 331 reviews, so the review count does not say which size buyers preferred. Choose by the area you will sow.
When should I treat this as a paddock rather than a lawn?
Stop the lawn comparison when the ground is for horses or ponies. EquiGrass is the only clover-free, tetraploid-free paddock bag in this set. The listing gives no coverage figure or certification number, so check the physical label. Do not treat a lawn bag as feeding advice.
Is pet friendly on a listing a reason to choose that bag?
Not by itself. That wording is seller copy, not a feeding trial, and it is not evidence the seed is suitable for horses. If the job, the named grasses, and a divisible area are missing, a pet line does not fill the gap.
