Fast growing grass seed UK: mix, area and coating

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a thin lawn after a dry summer, or a bare rectangle where a paddling pool sat, and the amazon.co.uk shelf only says fast. That word does not tell you whether the bag is perennial ryegrass, a finer fescue, a coating that adds husk weight, or enough grams for the square metres you have. This buying guide is the choice before the prices. The [fast growing grass seed comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/fast-growing-grass-seed) holds the twelve listings, the GBP shelf prices and the review counts. Here you decide what fast usually means, how to read a printed area, and when a coating or a DEFRA line is being asked to do too much.

What fast usually is

On a British lawn, fast cover is usually perennial ryegrass. The RHS describes a general-purpose mix as ryegrass with fescues and browntop bent: it comes up quickly, it takes wear, and it needs cutting often. A fine lawn leans towards fescues and bent, and it is slower to fill. Cheap agricultural ryegrass can hide in a bargain title. The RHS warns that it is coarser than turf-type ryegrass. In this set, only the UKgrow 20 m² pack names perennial ryegrass and red fescue, and it gives no percentages. Every other fast title is a slogan until you read the packet. Browntop bent does not suit shade. A fast mix under a dense tree is a separate problem, which is why the grass seed for shade page stays on light and species. If the ground sees less than four hours of sun, speed is the wrong criterion.

Coverage before kilograms

A kilogram is not an area. Supplier rules of thumb, not these amazon listings, often sit around 25–50 g per square metre for a new lawn and around 15–35 g for patches. The RHS repair note is usually about 15–25 g per square metre. Your packet rate wins when it is printed. Gro-Sure’s small box states 10 m² from 300 g. The 10 kg Aqua Gel bag states 250 m². Wolf-Garten LR 25 states 25 m². Quick GRO states 14 m² per 420 g box, sold as a pair. UKgrow states 20 m² from a listed 600 g. Grassias says up to 87.5 m² per 1.70 kg unit, on each unit in the pack of two. Up to is a ceiling in a bullet, not a weighed test. EverGreen at 480 g, the UKGROW 100 g tub, all three ProGrass sizes and Doff 1 kg print no coverage, so you cannot price them per square metre from the listing. A 20 m² new lawn at 35 g per square metre is 700 g. The UKgrow pack is listed at 600 g. Follow the packet if the rate differs. The how to sow grass seed page is where the seed meets the ground.

Coatings and the legal label

A blue or gel coating is a dressing around the seed, not a better grass. Gro-Sure’s 10 kg listing claims an aqua gel and a blue coating. Buyers describe a lot of the weight as husk. Buy the printed 250 m², not 10 kg of seed as if every gram were a grain. The small Gro-Sure box claims a bird-deterrent dressing, and one buyer still covered the seed with fine sand. DEFRA approved on a title is not a germination test. The Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 say fodder grasses, including perennial ryegrass and red fescue, may be marketed only if certified, packed, sealed, labelled and sold by a licensed person. GOV.UK’s guidance covers England and Wales and signposts Scotland separately. Grassias puts Winter & Defra Approved in the title, and the file has no certificate number. Pet friendly means the seller is not describing a pesticide. It does not stop dog-urine scorch. A four-day bullet is a marketing line. The RHS puts ordinary germination at about seven to ten days in early autumn or mid-spring.

What to leave for the comparison

Prices and who ranks where belong on the main comparison. A small stated area matches patches and a modest new strip: the 10 m² box, the 14 m² boxes, the 20 m² pack or the 25 m² Wolf box. The 10 kg bag matches a large thin lawn, and it is a clumsy buy for two bald spots. EverGreen’s 4.2 from 5,144 reviews and Wolf’s 4.1 from 7,578 are large samples. Doff’s 4.5 from nine reviews is not a win. Once you know you want a named ryegrass-and-fescue pack, or a stated 250 m², the comparison is the next click. A fast ryegrass mix is a poor match if you want a fine, short lawn.

Common questions

Is fast growing grass seed just perennial ryegrass?
Often it is ryegrass-led, which is why it covers quickly and needs more mowing. A proper general-purpose packet also includes fescues and browntop bent. In this amazon set, only the UKgrow 20 m² listing names perennial ryegrass and red fescue, and it still omits the percentages. If the title only says fast, treat the species as unknown until you see the label.
How many grams do I need per square metre?
Use the rate on your packet. As a supplier rule of thumb, new lawns are often about 25–50 g per square metre and patches about 15–35 g, with the RHS repair range usually about 15–25 g. Do not convert a 480 g or 1 kg listing into an area when the file prints none.
Does a blue or gel coating mean better seed?
It means the seed is dressed, usually to hold moisture or to discourage birds. The grass variety is unchanged. On the Gro-Sure 10 kg bag, reviewers say much of the weight feels like husk, so the stated 250 m² matters more than the 10 kg headline. A coating also does not replace raking seed into contact with soil.
What does DEFRA approved mean on a title?
It is not a quality ranking and not proof that this amazon listing is certified. UK seed law requires certified, labelled fodder-grass seed, including ryegrass and red fescue mixtures, sold by a licensed person. Look for that label on the packet. A title line without a certificate number, as on the Grassias listing here, is not the label.
Which pack if I only have a few bare patches?
Choose a small stated area rather than a 10 kg bag. In this set that means the Gro-Sure 10 m² box, Quick GRO at 14 m² per box, UKgrow at 20 m², or Wolf at 25 m², depending on how many patches you measured. The UKGROW 100 g tub is cheaper still, but it prints no coverage, so you only know it is a small tub.
Why do three ProGrass sizes share one review count?
The 1 kg, 2 kg and 4 kg files in this batch carry the same review texts and the same 4.2 from 185. That is one shared block, not three independent samples. You can still prefer a larger bag for the weight, but you should not treat the stars as three times the evidence. None of the three prints a square-metre rate.
