How to sow clover seed UK gardeners can time

Updated: October 2026

The packet is in the kitchen and you need a month, not another product. How to sow clover seed UK conditions will support comes down to warm, moist soil in mid-spring or early autumn, seed that is only just covered, and water that continues after the first wet weekend. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team on 16 October 2026. It uses Royal Horticultural Society guidance and the sowing lines UK clover sellers print. We did not run a plot trial, and we do not rank packets here. Which pouch to buy sits on the [clover seeds comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/clover-seeds). When to sow in the UK

The safest windows are mid-spring and early autumn, when the soil stays moist and has warmed. For a lawn from seed, the RHS gives September to November, or March and April. Meadowmania suggests April to early June, or late August to mid-September, for micro white clover. The Grass People says March to September once the soil sits at about 8–10°C. One Pipolina listing in our set uses a similar floor: sow above 8°C. Treat that as a soil temperature, not as the air on a sunny afternoon. A dry week can sit inside those months and still fail, because the seed is small and the surface bakes. Wait for the soil, not for a date on the packet. Winter is outside those bands. Red and crimson used as green manure follow a different calendar: the RHS suggests March to August, then you cut them in. That is not a turf timetable.

Depth and contact

Clover seed wants a shallow cover. The Grass People gives 5–10 mm for micro clover, which is a rake’s depth, not a trench. Pressing it 2 cm down is a common way to lose a sowing, because the shoot runs out of energy before it reaches the light. On a bare bed, clear weeds, break a fine crumb, broadcast half the seed one way and half at right angles, then rake so most seeds disappear without being buried. The Damavand white-clover listing describes the same sequence: clear, broadcast, rake, water. On an existing lawn, mow short, rake out thatch, and get seed onto soil. Throwing it over long turf leaves most of it in the leaf. Meadowmania prints 1.5 g per square metre to overseed and 10 g on bare ground. The Pipolina listing prints 5–10 g to overseed and 10–20 g for a new area. The clover seed buying guide shows which packets already disagree with themselves. If water sits for days, fix the drainage before you sow.

Water until it is established

Keep the surface damp for several weeks, not for a single weekend. The Grass People talks about watering a new micro-clover sowing for about six weeks. That matches the usual failure: seed sown into a dry spell, watered once, then left. A light watering that darkens the top few millimetres, repeated so the crumb never goes dusty, is closer to the point than a flood that washes seed into the path. You do not need a sprinkler running all day. DLF’s UK notes say not to flood microclover, and the RHS notes that white clover dislikes waterlogging. These sources do not promise germination in fourteen days. If the first ten days were dry, restore moisture before you scatter a second species on top.

Mow a lawn, cut a manure

White clover you want as a lawn needs a mower. Left alone, micro white clover can reach about 20–30 cm, which is Meadowmania’s unmown height. The micro clover seed page holds the reviews that say the plants grew tall. Mow once the seedlings are anchored enough that the machine does not pull them out, and take a high cut first. Red or crimson sown as a green manure is the opposite plan. The RHS treats them as covers from March to August, not as turf. If you bought a 70 per cent red mix, mowing it like a lawn fights the species you mostly sowed. White clover vs red clover is that choice. Do not add a nitrogen feed to hurry it. These pages give no fertiliser rate. Call a vet if a pet is ill after grazing, because a listing is not a toxicity trial.

Common questions

What months are safest in Britain?
Mid-spring and early autumn are the safest. The RHS gives March and April, or September to November, for lawn seed generally. Meadowmania narrows white clover to April–early June or late August–mid-September, and The Grass People wants soil around 8–10°C between March and September. A date inside those months still fails if the surface is dry or the soil is cold. Winter sowing, where one listing mentions it, is not the advice here.
How deep should clover seed go?
Aim for 5–10 mm, the depth The Grass People gives for micro clover. Rake the seed into fine, moist soil. The Damavand white-clover line says the same thing in short form: broadcast, then rake, then water. A 2 cm drill is too deep for this small seed. On an existing lawn, mow and rake first so the seed is not sitting in long grass. Seed on a thatch mat dries even when the calendar month is right.
How much water, and for how long?
Keep the surface moist for several weeks. The Grass People suggests about six weeks for a new micro-clover sowing. One heavy soak on sowing day, followed by a dry week, is the usual way to lose the seed. Do not flood the bed. DLF warns against flooding microclover, and the RHS notes that white clover dislikes waterlogged ground. Light, repeated watering on dry days is the practical version.
Can I throw it on the grass I have?
You can overseed, at a lower rate than a bare seedbed. Meadowmania prints 1.5 g per square metre for overseeding against 10 g on bare ground. The Pipolina listing prints 5–10 g to overseed and 10–20 g for a new sowing. Those figures are not one measurement. Scatter onto soil you have opened with a mower and a rake. Seed thrown onto long, closed turf mostly never meets the ground.
Why did nothing show after two weeks?
A fortnight is not a verdict. These sources do not promise that clover will be up in fourteen days. If the week after sowing was dry, or the seed went deeper than about 10 mm, empty soil is an expected result rather than proof the packet was dead. Restore moisture and check the depth. Sow again only when you are sure the first seed is not still sitting in a crust. Soil below about 8°C slows the same sowing.
