Clover seeds UK: choose species and grams first

Updated: October 2026

You are comparing packets because a UK lawn, a rough corner, or a vegetable bed needs cover, and the amazon.co.uk titles do not agree on the job. Clover seeds UK listings in this set run from about £2.99 to £62.98, and a square-metre claim often fights the gram weight beside it. This buying guide uses the eleven listings behind the [clover seeds comparison](/hub/seeds-and-plants/clover-seeds), read for this page on 16 October 2026. We did not germinate seed in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. There is no winner here. Buy the plant and the grams before the brand.

Start with the species

White clover, Trifolium repens, is the lawn plant. The Royal Horticultural Society describes it as a creeping perennial that stays lower when you cut it, and notes that it dislikes very acid or waterlogged soil. Micro clover in this set is the same species sold for a smaller leaf, including packets that name Pipolina. The leaf stays small only if you mow. Red clover, Trifolium pratense, is the tall plant. The RHS puts it at about 60 cm in long grass, and the Damavand PRO red clover listing prints 15–60 cm. A mix that is 70 per cent red follows the red, even when the title says lawn. Read white clover vs red clover before you treat that mix as turf. SeedsAlp’s 100 g mix at £9.99 includes buckwheat, prints 2–3 g per square metre, and is rated 3.8 from seven reviews. That is a cover or a green manure, not white clover you will mow.

Check grams against the area

For a bare seedbed of white clover, 10 g per square metre is a useful check, not a law. Meadowmania prints that rate for a new sowing of micro white clover. Overseeding is lower: Meadowmania prints 1.5 g per square metre into existing grass, while the Pipolina listing here prints 5–10 g to overseed and 10–20 g for new ground. Depth and water sit on the how to sow clover seed page. Damavand PRO micro clover, 100 g at £7.80, says it covers 25 square metres. That is 4 g per square metre. Garden Lawncare Guy Pipolina goes the other way: 300 g at £23.98, claimed up to 15 square metres, which is 20 g per square metre. The pack titled for 20 square metres is listed at 50 g, while a table says 90 g. The 10 square metre pack shows 20 g against a table that says 40 g. Do not turn “3,000 seeds” into coverage. The white packet at that count is 5 g. The red packet is 10 g.

Read the star count once

Three Damavand red-and-white mixes, titled for 5, 10 and 20 square metres at £2.99, £4.99 and £8.00, all show 4.1 from 458 reviews. That is one shared pool, not three juries. Count it once. Choosing between those sizes is a weight decision, and two of the weights already disagree with the table. Other scores belong to one product. Pronto Seed’s 2 kg white clover is 4.4 from 159. Just Seed at £3.40 is 4.0 from 145, with no coverage rate. Damavand’s straight red clover is 4.2 from 228. A 4.1 on a 70 per cent red mix does not mean the sward will mow like white clover.

What the listing does not prove

Just Seed prints Defra 7291 and organic registration AP23164. Those are company lines, not a statement that the seeds in your envelope were certified, or that this pouch was sold as organic. The Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 include a small-package exception. That exception is not a quality mark. You would need the label in your hand. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, goods must match the description. If a title says 20 square metres and the table prints another gram weight, raise that with the seller. Do not average the two numbers. Ignore a pet-friendly line when there is no veterinary source. We did not assess toxicity. “Pipolina or Pirouette” is two names on one Damavand line. If the grams are missing, treat the packet as a small trial and weigh what arrives.

Common questions

Which clover is for a lawn?
White clover is the lawn species in RHS guidance, because it creeps and stays lower when you mow. Red clover grows to about 60 cm and belongs in long grass. A mix that is 70 per cent red behaves like the red, though white clover will still flower if you leave it uncut. Micro clover is still white clover, and it keeps a smaller leaf only if you cut it. If you will not mow, buy a meadow packet on purpose.
What does 3,000 seeds cover?
This guide does not convert a seed count into square metres. Damavand’s white clover listing marked “3,000 seeds” is 5 g and prints no coverage rate. The red clover listing with the same piece count is 10 g and prints a height of 15–60 cm. Five grams of white clover is a test strip. At 10 g per square metre it is about half a square metre of bare seedbed, and only if the 5 g on the listing is what arrives.
Why do three pack sizes share 458 reviews?
The Damavand red-and-white mixes titled for 5, 10 and 20 square metres each display 4.1 from 458 ratings. Treat that as one pool for the mix, not as three tests. The largest listing can still be the wrong weight even though the stars match the smallest pack. Compare the grams, which on two sizes conflict with the table, rather than buying the biggest title because the number looks familiar.
Is a Defra number the same as certified seed?
No. Just Seed’s listing shows Defra 7291 and organic registration AP23164 as company details. That is not a claim that the seeds were certified, or that this pouch was sold as organic. The Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 include a small-package exception, which is not a quality badge. If you need certified farm seed, use a supplier who states that on a label you can check.
Can I trust “covers 25 m²” on 100 g?
Not as a bare-lawn rate. One hundred grams over 25 square metres is 4 g per square metre. Meadowmania’s bare-seedbed figure for micro white clover is 10 g, and Hurrells prints 10–20 g for a new micro sowing. The Damavand 100 g packet at £7.80 uses the 25 square metre line. The Pipolina listing prints 5–10 g per square metre even for overseeding. Do not plan a new 25 square metre lawn on that one pouch.
