Micro clover too tall: mowing, feed and the packet

A white clover lawn with larger leaves and flower heads after several weeks unmown

Micro clover too tall on a UK lawn is often unmown white clover, or a packet that was never the small-leaved variety. Feed and cutting both change the leaf.

The lawn that was sold as a tight green carpet is up to your ankles, with white flowers and leaves the size of a 10p piece. Micro clover too tall has two ordinary causes. You left white clover to grow, and feed made the leaf larger. Or the seed was never the small-leaved variety the title suggested.

Micro clover is still Trifolium repens. It is not a different plant that stays at ground level if you ignore it.

In short

Unmown micro clover can reach about 20–30 cm, the height Meadowmania gives for plants that are left, and mowing is what keeps the leaf small. Extra fertiliser works against that. Some buyers of named Pipolina reported a result that was not micro, so a tall lawn is not automatically user error and not automatically a mislabelled bag. Red clover will not mow down into a micro lawn. Cut regularly, ease off the feed, and read the species on the packet.

Micro clover is still white clover

White clover is the lawn clover. Micro, Pipolina, Euromic and similar names are selections bred for a smaller leaf that sits among grass. DLF describes microclover as that small leaf, meant to live in a sward rather than as a tall fodder crop. The Royal Horticultural Society says regular cutting keeps clover low. None of that means the plant has lost the ability to flower and stretch if you put the mower away in May.

A pure clover lawn and a grass lawn with a little clover in it behave differently under the same neglect. In a mix, ryegrass can hide a moderate clover leaf until the grass thins. In a pure stand, a month of growth is obvious. The plant is doing what white clover does.

Red clover is the lookalike that is not micro at all. It grows upright, and packets in our file give heights from about 15 cm to 60 cm. Mowing knocks it back and it returns as red clover. A larger pink-purple head on a stout stem is a different species. Our clover seeds comparison separates white, red and named micro listings before you sow. After sowing, the plant in the ground is the evidence.

The comparison's top pick is Pronto Seed white clover, 2 kg at about £62.98, rated 4.4 from 159 ratings, claimed at about 100 square metres per kilogram. That bag is straight white clover, not a micro selection. The named micro listing is Garden Lawncare Guy Pipolina, about 300 g, up to 15 square metres, £23.98, rated 4.1 from 302. Overseed rates are about 5–10 g per square metre and new-lawn rates about 10–20 g. Pipolina is the packet this leaf-size question turns on. Those figures are buyer ratings and seller claims, not a leaf measurement we made.

Mowing and feed change the leaf

Meadowmania's micro white clover notes are the clearest height pair. Left alone, plants can reach about 20–30 cm. Mow, and you keep the sward fine. Do not overfeed. Those three points explain most cases that start with a correct packet and a busy spring. A holiday, a broken mower, or a decision to let it flower for a fortnight is enough. The leaf stalks elongate, the leaflets expand, and the lawn looks like the wild white clover people were trying to avoid.

How short is a live argument. Hurrells, writing about Euromic, mentions a cut down to about 15 mm and also says the clover is healthier if left longer. Fifteen millimetres can scalp a lawn that is not flat. Twice-weekly mowing shows up in Pipolina buyer comments from people keeping it tight. Weekly through the flush, at a height you can hold without soil showing, sits between a usable lawn and that caution. In a drought, raise the height and mow less. Cutting a stressed clover to the crown browns it.

Fertiliser is the other lever. A combined lawn feed aimed at greening ryegrass fast pushes clover leaf. If you fed in April and the clover coarsened by June, the feed is a suspect even when you mowed. Stop, water in dry spells, and keep cutting. On a real micro selection, the new growth comes in on a shorter stalk. Compost and a bed that grew vegetables last year do a slower version of the same thing, which is why the first season can look lush and tall.

Flowers mean the plant was left long enough to bud. Bees use those flowers. Keep one strip long for a month and mow the rest if you want both a walkway and a bee patch. Take heavy clippings off the strip so you are not mulching stalks onto the small plants. One mow does not restore the catalogue leaf overnight.

Some packets did not grow as micro

The other cause is the seed. Pipolina reviews in the captured clover material include people who mowed and still said the result was not micro. That can mean a mix-up in the bag, a variety larger than the buyer's photograph, or a lawn that was also fed and left. Both stories are in the reviews. Your lawn matches one of them only when the mowing and the label agree.

Read the height the seller printed. A Damavand micro listing includes a bullet around 3–4 inches, about 8–10 cm, beside a 15 cm height line. That is already taller than a ground-hugging mat, and still shorter than the 20–30 cm Meadowmania allows for neglected plants. Clover at 10 cm a week after a cut can match that bullet. Clover at 40 cm with red flowers has parted company with a micro packet.

Wild white clover is a legitimate lawn plant and a larger habit than a micro selection. Just Seed's wild white listing is Trifolium repens with a Defra number and an organic registration, not a Pipolina label. Sowing it because the title said white clover, then judging it against a micro advert, produces a lawn that matched the seed. Buy the name you want to mow.

A short packet or a leaked box is a quantity problem. It does not by itself enlarge the leaf. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is about goods matching the description, including the variety name if it was stated. Photos of the plants, the packet and your mowing dates are the record. This page cannot promise a refund. A seller can also point at a month without a mower. Keep both facts.

What to do next

If the packet names a micro variety and you have not mown for weeks, mow now on a high setting first, then drop the height over the next two or three cuts. Stop feeding. Tighter growth, if the variety can do it, shows in the new leaves. If those leaves are still large after a month of regular cutting and no feed, compare the plant with the species on the packet.

If you want flowers for bees, leave a strip and mow the walking area. If you want wear, overseed grass into visible soil in September or April and keep mowing so the clover does not shade it out. DLF's point is that microclover belongs with grass, the same split as clover or grass for a UK lawn. Grass seed does not turn a red-clover patch into a micro lawn.

When the species is wrong and the area is small, cut it short and resow the variety you wanted at about 10–20 g per square metre, the Pipolina new-sow lines, into bare damp soil. On 15 square metres that rate is more seed than a sprinkle. The 300 g listing's claim of up to 15 square metres is the seller's ceiling. Check it against 10–20 g before you trust one pass to look dense.

Prices move. £23.98 and £62.98 are captured amazon.co.uk prices, in GBP. A qualifying purchase through our link can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We compared those listings with Meadowmania's mowing notes, Hurrells on Euromic, DLF's microclover description and the RHS line on cutting clover. We did not mow a trial lawn. A micro label still needs a mower.

Common questions

Did the variety fail, or did I leave the clover unmown?
Both happen, and they look similar at first. Micro clover is white clover with a smaller leaf when it is mown and not overfed. Meadowmania describes plants reaching about 20–30 cm if left, and says mowing keeps the sward fine. A lawn you abandoned for a month in May can look like ordinary clover even when the seed was a small-leaved variety. Look at the packet name, then at your mowing gap. Flowers and long leaf stalks are what unmown white clover does.
How often should I cut micro clover?
Often enough that it never reaches the 20–30 cm Meadowmania gives for plants that are left. Buyers of Pipolina in our captured reviews talk about twice-weekly mowing when they want it tight. Hurrells, on Euromic, mentions mowing to about 15 mm and also says the plant is healthier if left longer. A very short cut stresses the clover. A missed month enlarges the leaf. Cut regularly through the growing season, higher than scalping, and do not leave it until it flowers.
Will fertiliser make the leaves bigger?
Yes. Meadowmania's micro white clover advice is not to overfeed. Nitrogen pushes leaf and stalk on clover the way it pushes grass. A spring lawn feed aimed at a ryegrass pitch is a common way to turn a neat micro sward coarse. If the clover is already larger than you wanted, stop the feed and resume mowing. The next leaves can come in smaller on a true micro variety. Feed will not change the species. Red clover and a large-leaved white clover stay those plants.
Can tall micro clover go back to small leaves?
On a genuine small-leaved variety, regular mowing and less fertiliser can bring the habit back down. The plant is still alive and still white clover. You are changing the growth you see. If the plants are red clover, or a white clover that was never a micro selection, mowing lowers the height and the leaf stays the larger type. Give it a few cuts over two or three weeks before you judge. One short cut on a flowering stand only removes the heads.
Which packet named Pipolina?
In our clover comparison, Garden Lawncare Guy Pipolina is the listing that names Trifolium repens Pipolina. The captured file shows about 300 g, a claim of up to 15 square metres, £23.98, and 4.1 from 302 ratings. Overseed rates on the technical lines are about 5–10 g per square metre, and new sow rates about 10–20 g. Some reviews say the result was not micro. Read that as one named packet with mixed buyer reports. The comparison's top pick, Pronto Seed white clover at 2 kg, is a different product.
Is tall clover still useful for bees?
Flowering clover feeds bees, and mowing removes the flowers. A tight micro lawn and a bee patch are different settings of the same species. If you want both, mow most of the area and leave a strip to flower, then cut that strip after the flush so it does not all go to seed. Tall flowering clover is a poor surface for ball games. You do not get a postcard of blooms and a putting surface from one mowing height.
Should I overseed grass into tall clover?
Grass helps wear. It does not turn the wrong clover into Pipolina. DLF describes microclover as a small leaf bred to sit inside grass, usually with ryegrass, not as a pure carpet that tolerates a football match on its own. If the clover is true micro and simply long, mow first. If you also want a harder surface, overseed a suitable grass into soil you can see, in autumn or spring. If the plant is red clover at meadow height, grass seed will not convert it.
When is it just the wrong species?
When the leaf and the flower match red clover, or the packet never said micro and instead said wild white or a cover mix. Damavand's micro listing includes a bullet of about 3–4 inches, which is already taller than a tight mown sward, beside a 15 cm height line. Red clover packets in the same comparison cite heights from about 15 cm up to 60 cm. Those plants will not become a micro lawn. Mow for tidiness if you are keeping them, or replace the patch if you wanted the small leaf.
