Electric screwdriver buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A flat-pack chest of drawers is waiting in the hall, and the amazon.co.uk listing in front of you has thousands of reviews and a 48-in-1 photo. This electric screwdriver buying guide is the order of checks, so the star line comes last. Start with the job, then torque and the clutch, then how the tool charges on UK mains, then what the box really contains, and only then the price. The [electric screwdriver comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/electric-screwdriver) holds the listings and the captured prices. This page does not crown a winner. What you are actually buying

A household electric screwdriver is a small cordless stick, usually 3.6 V or 4 V max, with a built-in cell and a 1/4 inch hex collet. It drives screws into holes that already exist. It is not a small drill. ManoMano's UK guide puts cordless screwdrivers at roughly 2–10 Nm and drill drivers at about 40 Nm, a retailer rule of thumb, not a lab result. Where this set prints a figure, the maximum is 3–6 Nm: enough for a pre-drilled chipboard screw, not a decking screw into joists. New holes belong on electric screwdriver vs cordless drill.

Torque and a clutch, in that order

The printed maximum is the ceiling. A clutch is the lower limit that stops the tool before the screw strips the board. For particle board, that limit matters more than an extra newton-metre. The Fanttik is the only row with a printed 0.5 Nm step, across 0.5–6 Nm. The Bosch GO 3 lists seven settings and no maximum Nm, so its ceiling is n/a. The HYCHIKA prints 6 Nm and no numbered clutch. Joybuy's UK guide says prefer a clutch to a bigger maximum.

How it charges on UK mains

Almost every tool here has a built-in lithium cell. BLACK+DECKER and Draper name a mains charger. A USB-only box still needs a UK plug you trust. The IXO Amazon Edition uses micro-USB and the HYCHIKA uses USB-C. Electrical Safety First says use the original charger, with a fused UK 3-pin plug, and that a travel adaptor is not a fix. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 covers BS 1363 at a domestic socket. The IXO title says 3.6 V and the table prints 230 V. The best cordless screwdriver page explains why that line does not rule the IXO out.

Bits, magnets, and the case in the photo

A 48-in-1 or 105-in-1 count includes bits, extensions and adaptors. It does not say they fit UK screws. Most household work needs a PZ2, a PH2 and a short magnetic holder. A Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw rounds the head, which is mixing up Pozidriv and Phillips. The IXO Amazon Edition ships in a carton, not the hard case of some other IXO editions. The HYCHIKA included line does not name a case.

What to do with the comparison table

Read the listings in that order: the job, then torque and a numbered clutch, then the charge method and the included line, and only then the price. This set runs from £13.99 to £85.49. Stars come last. A 4.6 average from more than 8,000 ratings does not mean those buyers assembled your furniture. A UK review of a clutch that does not hold weighs more. We compared listings and public UK sources. We did not run a lab test.

Common questions

What torque do I need for cupboard screws?
For cupboard hinges and small brackets in pre-drilled chipboard, the 3–6 Nm range printed on these screwdrivers is usually enough. The lower end of that range is safer for particle board, because the screw can strip the hole once it seats. If the tool has a numbered clutch, start on a low step and move up only if the screw stops before its head is flush.
Is a clutch different from a maximum Nm figure?
Yes. The maximum Nm is the most force the motor can deliver. A clutch lets you set a lower limit so the tool slips once that limit is reached. For furniture and soft boards, a clutch protects the screw and the material, whereas a high maximum without one only means the tool will keep turning harder until you release the switch.
Does 230 V on a listing mean the tool runs on the mains?
Not for a cordless electric screwdriver. A 3.6 V tool runs from its own battery. The Bosch IXO Amazon Edition listing shows 3.6 V in the title and 230 V in its spec table. Read the 230 V line as a table error or a charger-side figure, not as a sign that the screwdriver plugs into the wall.
Is a USB-C cable the same as a UK charger?
No. A USB-C cable connects the tool to a power source but does not plug into a UK socket on its own. You need a UK USB plug or another port you trust. Electrical Safety First recommends the original charger with a UK 3-pin plug and advises against travel adaptors for non-UK plugs.
Does a 48-in-1 or 105-in-1 kit mean better bits?
No. The number counts every bit, extension and adaptor in the box, not how well they fit or how long they last. For UK household screws, a few well-fitting Pozidriv and Phillips bits plus a magnetic holder do most of the work. Check reviews for comments on bits rounding off or not fitting standard screws.
When is a 3.6 V stick the wrong purchase?
A 3.6 V electric screwdriver is the wrong tool when you need to make holes, drive long screws into joists, fix a fence or work in masonry. Its printed torque tops out around 6 Nm in this set. For those jobs, a drill driver or impact driver is the right category, and a stick can stay as a companion tool.
