Pozidriv vs Torx screws: which bit matches the box

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a driver, a handful of chipboard screws, and three recesses that look similar until the bit spins. Pozidriv vs Torx screws, on this page, is that choice for the ten amazon.co.uk boxes in the set: which recess the listing states, which bit matches it, and what to do when the page names two. Clutch settings and pilot holes stay on the [how to screw into chipboard](/hub/screws-and-accessories/chipboard-screws/sub/chipboard-screws-how-to-drive) page. Prices are on the [chipboard screws comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/chipboard-screws). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The recommendation is to match the recess you can see. If the listing names two recesses, do not pick one and call it settled. Floor length is out of scope here.

Three recesses, not two

Pozidriv is a cross with tick marks between the arms. Phillips is a plain cross, and the household bit is usually PH2. Torx is a six-point star, printed TX on a fischer label. At arm’s length the ticks disappear and a Pozidriv head looks like Phillips. Fischer’s UK label key uses TX, PZ and PH for three catalogue rows, not three names for one screw. The shape in your hand wins over a bullet that borrows a second code.

Phillips in Pozidriv, and Pozidriv in Phillips

Shop4Fasteners states that Phillips is designed to cam out. A Phillips driver can turn a Pozidriv screw, and it can damage it. The bit climbs out as the torque rises, and the wings of the cross chew the head. You feel a sudden slip and a shiny circle where the ticks used to be. A second attempt with the same PH2 bit makes it worse. Tip the screw under a lamp. Ticks mean Pozidriv, so fit PZ2. A plain cross means Phillips, so fit PH2. A star means Torx, so fit the star that fills the recess. If you cannot see which shape it is, try an offcut before the finished face. The best chipboard screws page names the indoor pick. It does not change the bit once the recess is in your hand.

What Torx changes

Axminster’s comparison says Pozidriv can still cam out, because the recess is cone-shaped and the bit can climb. Torx uses a six-point star and parallel driving lands, so cam-out is largely gone and the bit stays seated. If the bit does not jump out, the screw keeps going. You can sink the head past flush, especially with an impact driver, which has no clutch. Both Ulti-Mate boxes say Phillips and square. The bullets name a Stick-Fit bit, the square that holds the screw on the driver. That is not Torx. Reviews say the bit can be missing or can fail. Carry a spare square bit if you buy those boxes.

Which box in this set says which drive

The TIMCO Solo title says PZ. The maker page for 40050SOLOC says PZ2. The Amazon drive field says Phillips and the head type says Hex. If you see ticks, use PZ2. If you see a plain cross, use PH2. Do not fit a hex driver unless the head in your hand is a hex. SEQUAL’s M4 x 40 mm and M5 x 60 mm state Pozidriv. The fischer 4.0 x 40 mm states Phillips. The fischer 5.0 x 60 mm title says TX and a bullet says PZ. If the listing names two recesses, leave it unsettled until the screw confirms one.

Common questions

How do I tell Pozidriv, Phillips and Torx apart on the screw?
Pozidriv has a cross plus small tick marks between the arms. Phillips is a plain cross with no ticks. Torx is a six-point star. PZ2 is the usual bit for 3.5–5.0 mm Pozidriv timber screws. PH2 matches a Phillips chipboard screw. A star needs the Torx size that fills the recess. This page does not invent that size for a conflicting listing.
What happens if I use a PH2 bit in a PZ2 head?
The bit can turn the screw and then cam out. Shop4Fasteners notes that Phillips is designed to slip, and that a Phillips driver can damage a Pozidriv head. You get a rounded recess and a screw that is only partly home. Fit PZ2, seat it fully, and keep the driver in line.
Can a Pozidriv bit drive a Phillips screw?
It is not a safe match. A Pozidriv bit does not sit properly in a Phillips recess, and Bolts.co.uk says that mix damages the screw. Use PH2 for a Phillips listing, including the fischer 4.0 x 40 mm box and the TOPYWMSP 30 mm box, if the screw in the parcel is a plain cross.
Why do people move to Torx, and what new mistake does that create?
Torx holds the bit on parallel faces, so cam-out is largely gone, which Axminster sets against a Pozidriv recess that can still climb out. The new mistake is driving past flush, because the bit stays seated and an impact driver will not click. Watch the head meet the surface. Torx does not fix a listing that also claims PZ.
Which of these ten boxes states Pozidriv, which states Phillips, and which states both?
SEQUAL’s M4 x 40 mm and M5 x 60 mm state Pozidriv. The fischer 4.0 x 40 mm, TOPYWMSP, Gorffy and ANVINKU state Phillips or PH2. TIMCO’s title says PZ while Amazon says Phillips and Hex. Both Ulti-Mate boxes state Phillips and square. The fischer 5.0 x 60 mm title says TX and a bullet says PZ. Those last two stay unresolved until you see the screw.
Why must the fischer 5.0 x 60 mm page stay unresolved?
The title says an inner star and a full thread. A bullet says Phillips PZ and a part thread. Fischer’s UK range sells those as different rows. One UK review mentions Torx on plywood over floorboards, against a listing count of 1,568 that was not read through as UK reviews. Choosing one bit and ignoring the other line is how the wrong recess gets wrecked.
