Aircrete fixings buying guide: match the wall before the box

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing in a UK garage or a new-build hallway, and the wall is either bare aerated block or plasterboard stuck to block with dabs of adhesive. The price does not tell you which family belongs in that hole. This aircrete fixings buying guide is the decision before you pick a card. Name the build-up, then the way the weight pulls, then the pack. The ten listings, with GBP prices from amazon.co.uk in October 2026, are on the [aircrete fixings comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/aircrete-fixings). This is not a laboratory pull-out test. Name the wall before you name a brand

Aerated concrete, the Thermalite and Celcon class used in many UK garages, is full of small voids. A plug that needs a dense hole spins or crumbles the face. A spiral hammer-in anchor is the family for that bare face: fischer GB Green and the grey GB 8. Neither includes a drill bit. Dot and dab is a different wall, even when the block behind the board is the same. The plasterboard is only the skin. The load has to cross the cavity, or it is hanging on gypsum. The bridge types here are Corefix, fischer DDF and Rigifix. If you are not sure which skin you have, the dot and dab fixings page stays on that build-up. A normal plug can suit dense block. It is the wrong object once the block is soft.

Bare block and a dabbed wall are not one purchase

On an exposed garage wall, a modest rail or a mailbox is the GB job. Medium loads in aerated concrete is the seller's wording, not a pull-out from this site. The 40-piece box at £16.98 shares the 20-piece line, 4.7 from 75 ratings. The grey 25-piece GB at £18.60 is 4.7 from 687 ratings and talks about an A4 screw for a façade. On a dabbed wall, move to a bridge. The Corefix four-pack is £6.30, with 55 kg per fixing on the listing. The 24-pack is £21.00 and adds a four-fixing bullet of 100 kg. Rigifix's 280 kg shear line is not a licence to hang a long arm into the room. If the wall is bare, start with GB. If it is dabbed, start with a bridge. Where a red plug still belongs is on aircrete fixings versus standard wall plugs.

Read the kilogram as a ceiling, then divide

Divide the object by the fixings that will carry it. A 12 kg radiator on four points is 3 kg each. That sits under a 55 kg highlight and can still be wrong if the bracket stands off the wall. Corefix warns against cantilever brackets. The 100 kg bullet is four points together. Two holes do not inherit it. FPX M10 is £92.40 for 25 metal anchors, 4.4 from 20 ratings, with no domestic kilogram. None of these products approves a boiler or a party wall. If failure would injure someone, get a competent person.

Pack size, the drill, and what you cannot undo

A single television rarely needs 50 pieces. The four-pack at £6.30 is the entry dab fixing. The six-pack at £9.49 is the one with a 10 mm bit. Dust in a dabbed hole stops the core reaching sound block. Rigifix is torque by hand. The 24-pack is the top pick on the main scoring, and the four-pack is the best value. Both are the wrong buy on bare block.

Common questions

Will normal plugs work in breeze block?
Only if the block is dense aggregate and the hole is in that masonry. Aerated blocks such as Thermalite and Celcon do not give a standard plug a solid wall to expand into, and reviewers' spin-out stories usually start there. If the face is soft and sandy when you drill, treat it as aerated and use a fixing listed for that block. If you are unsure, do not guess from the colour of the plug.
How many fixings do I need for a television?
Divide the set's weight by the number of holes in the bracket, and keep each share inside the listing's per-fixing claim. A 55 kg highlight is not a promise that one fixing holds a 55 kg arm. Corefix listings warn against cantilever television brackets, so a flat mount on a dabbed wall is the case these kits describe, and a long arm is the case they tell you to avoid.
Should I buy GB Green or Corefix for an internal wall?
Buy GB Green when the aerated block is bare and you can hammer into it. Buy Corefix when plasterboard is dabbed over the block and the screw has to bridge the cavity. An internal wall in a house built in the last couple of decades is often the second case. A garage or a thermobloc wall with the block showing is often the first.
Do I need a 10 mm bit?
The Corefix television six-pack at £9.49 includes a 10 mm masonry bit. The other boxes in this comparison do not. If you are not using that kit, check the diameter on the packet you bought and drill that size, then clear the dust. A bit that is merely about right is how the plug spins.
Can I remove a hammer-in aircrete anchor?
GB anchors are driven in and are not designed to be unscrewed like a normal plug. Pulling one out usually damages the face of the block. If the position might change, that is a reason to think twice before you hammer the first one, especially on a finished garage wall you cannot easily patch.
Is the fischer FPX box worth it at home?
At £92.40 for 25 metal anchors and only 20 amazon.co.uk ratings, FPX is a trade spend for higher loads in bare aerated concrete. One rail or a mailbox is cheaper and simpler with a GB box around £8 to £19. Buy FPX when you already know you need a metal expansion anchor and you will use the box, not because the title sounds heavier.
