How to use a reciprocating saw

Updated: October 2026

The saw is out of the box, the first cut is a pallet or a garden stem, and the failure reviewers describe is a blade that walks out of the clamp once the cut loads up. How to use a reciprocating saw starts with this sequence: isolate the power, tug the blade, support the work, keep both hands on the tool, and stop if it jams. Listings were read on 15 October 2026. We did not run a cutting trial. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Make the saw safe before the blade goes in

Unplug a corded saw, or take the battery off a cordless one, before the blade goes near the clamp. Frank Key’s hire guidance puts that isolation first. Electrical Safety First says the same for outdoor work: disconnect before you adjust, and keep the tool out of the rain. On mains outdoors, use an RCD and a single outdoor extension that is fully unwound. Electrical Safety First says not to plug a lead into a lead. WORKPRO’s listing prints 220 V and does not name a plug, so confirm the cable in your hand. Gloves, boots, and eye protection are the minimum the hire sheet expects. If the cut is a shrub, blade choice and the felling limit are on the reciprocating saw for pruning page. The outdoor RCD choice is on the corded versus cordless reciprocating saw page.

Fit the blade and pull it

With the power isolated, open the clamp, seat the blade fully, close the lock, and pull the blade away from the shoe. If it comes out in your hand, it is not locked. WORKPRO reviews in this set say the blade falls out, including with other new blades, and one says the saw ejects the blade if it jams. DEKOPRO reviews describe the same clamp. The blade cuts on the backstroke, so the teeth pull the shoe onto the work. A universal half-inch shank is the common UK replacement. Stanley is the only listing here that states T and U acceptance. Fit a coarse wood blade for timber, around 5 to 8 TPI, and keep the fine blade for thin metal. Which box to buy sits on the reciprocating saw buying guide.

Let the shoe work, with both hands

Support the work so it cannot swing or close on the blade. A WORKPRO review puts the result in one line: if the branch moves, you will not get a cut. Hold the saw with both hands and keep the shoe pressed to the work. Start the blade against the shoe, let it reach speed, then lean only enough to keep the shoe seated. If the note drops and the blade stalls, release the trigger. Pulling harder loads the clamp. Overhead, the offcut’s path stays clear of your face and your feet. A pivoting shoe, as on the EZUVITA listing, only helps if it sits flat. One review says the shoe jammed, so test the pivot with the power isolated.

Stop, and when that means a professional

Stop when the motor labours, when the blade jams, when you smell hot windings, or when a corded cable is nicked. Unplug or remove the battery before you free a jammed blade. A bent blade stays out of the clamp. Stop outdoors in rain, or if the work is near an overhead line. Electrical Safety First’s pole-saw page uses a 15 metre clearance for that other tool. Treat a line you can see above a branch as a reason to leave the saw in the box. A pallet in the drive stays on this page. Felling, work at height, or timber under tension is where you call someone who does that work.

Common questions

Do I unplug before changing the blade?
Yes. Unplug a corded saw, or remove the battery, before you open the clamp. Frank Key’s hire sheet and Electrical Safety First both put isolation before adjustment. Fit the blade, close the lock, tug it, and only then restore power. Outdoors, do that change away from standing water. If you are on mains, keep one lead fully unwound and an RCD in the circuit.
How do I know the blade is locked?
Pull it, with the power isolated. A click is not enough. WORKPRO and DEKOPRO reviews describe blades leaving the clamp, including after a jam, so the tug is the check those reviews imply. The blade should stay seated when you pull it away from the shoe. Teeth on this style of saw cut on the backstroke and pull the shoe onto the work, so a half-seated blade both falls out and cuts poorly.
Why does the cut stop if the branch moves?
The teeth need the shoe braced and the timber held. A moving branch takes the load off the shoe, the blade skates, and the cut stalls. A WORKPRO review states that result directly. Clamp the work, or cut so the piece you are keeping cannot swing. The same thing happens with a pallet slat that bounces on the ground. Hold the work still, with both hands on the saw.
What if the motor labours?
Release the trigger. Frank Key’s guidance says not to force a labouring motor. Isolate the power, then free the jam, and replace a bent blade rather than leaning harder. Pulling harder is the moment a clamp can throw the blade, which WORKPRO reviews describe. Check that you are in wood with a coarse blade, not in a thick stem with a fine metal blade. If the cable is damaged, leave the saw unplugged.
When do I stop and call someone?
Call a competent person when the work is felling, work at height, timber under tension you cannot secure, or any cut near an overhead line. The Health and Safety Executive expects training for machinery in tree work, and it treats chainsaws separately. Also stop, without calling anyone, for a jammed blade, a hot motor, a nicked cable, or rain on a mains saw. Isolate the power first. A pallet in the drive can stay on this page.
