How to sand wood edges

Updated: 21 October 2026

A square edge goes round in a few careless passes, and a veneer face goes through faster. How to sand wood edges, with the tools in this comparison, is about keeping the abrasive on the arris and stopping before the corner disappears. The seven amazon.co.uk listings are set out on the [edge sander comparison](/hub/sanders/edge-sander). Peter F. did not run a lab trial. Set the edge up before the abrasive touches it

Support the board so the face is not resting on grit. For two square edges, fit the included 150 grit disc to the Milescraft 1621 and seat the board in the V. A board proud of the stated edge height will sand a curve. On a powered mouse, start raw softwood around 120 or 150 grit and step finer. On veneer, use less pressure. Let the tool come up to speed before it touches the wood, and lift off before you switch off. Which tool to buy is on the edge sander buying guide.

Keep the face square

A tilted pad rounds the edge. On the Milescraft, keep the board seated in the V and use light passes on the end grain. Stop if the corner becomes a radius. On a mouse or corner palm, keep the pad flat and use the tip only in a real corner. A 200 W HYCHIKA or the Bosch PSM 200 AES will cut a facet if you roll your wrist. The Ryobi palm heats if you stay on one spot, so pause. Once the arris is a radius, sanding harder will not put the square back.

Veneer, paint coats and the mistakes that show later

Keep a coarse disc on the edge. The Milescraft’s 150 grit sheet is a starting point on raw board and too hungry on a thin face. Between paint coats, a decorator rule of thumb is around 240 grit, with light pressure, to knock nibs. The 55 W BLACK+DECKER stays in that light range more easily than a 200 W tool. Sanding through to the undercoat leaves a line the next coat will flash. A round pad tips off a narrow edge, which is why two generic 125 mm random-orbit sanders were removed. Painted skirtings are on sanding skirting and architrave.

Dust while you work, and when to hand the job over

Fit the bag or box if the tool has one. HYCHIKA reviews still say dust escapes, and on the 200 W model the pads lose grip. The Milescraft has no extraction. HSE’s eight-hour limits are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and mixtures, and 5 mg/m³ for softwood. Sheet WD7 expects on-tool extraction where you can connect it. Otherwise use an FFP3 or a P3 half-mask. FFP2 is not enough. Vacuum rather than sweep. Stop for suspected lead paint. Hand a long solid-timber run to a joinery shop when the edge must stay dead square. Named picks are on best edge sander.

Common questions

How do I sand a wood edge without rounding it?
Keep the abrasive square to the edge. On the Milescraft 1621 the V-groove holds a 125 mm disc against both edges, so you concentrate on seating the board and using light strokes. On a mouse or detail sander, keep the pad flat and lift off before the motor slows. Check the arris under a raking light after each pass. Once the corner is a radius, sanding harder will not put the square back.
What grit should I use between paint coats on trim?
A decorator rule of thumb is a fine sheet, often around 240 grit, with light pressure to knock nibs off the previous coat. You are not trying to reach bare wood. The 150 grit disc included with the Milescraft is a coarser starting sheet for a raw board edge, and it is too aggressive for a fresh paint film. A 55 W mouse is easier to keep light than a 200 W detail sander.
Can I use a random-orbit sander on a narrow edge?
A generic 125 mm random-orbit sander is a poor edge tool, which is why two of them were removed from this comparison. The round pad tips off a narrow edge and rounds the arris. Use the Milescraft guide for square panel edges, or a mouse, delta or corner palm for corners. Keep the random-orbit sander for faces.
Is the dust bag enough while I sand?
A bag or dust box on the HYCHIKA or BLACK+DECKER cuts the visible mess and still lets dust escape, according to UK reviews on the larger HYCHIKA. HSE guidance expects extraction where you can fit it, and an FFP3 or P3 half-mask (assigned protection factor of at least 20) when it cannot. Vacuum afterwards. The Milescraft has no collector at all, so the same mask advice applies if you are making more than a light dusting.
Why does the cordless palm sander get hot?
The Ryobi 18V ONE+ corner palm is a bare tool at £44.99, and reviews mention motor heat on long runs as well as weak dust pickup. Sand in short stretches, then let the housing cool before you continue. Pressing harder to finish the last metre makes the heat worse and rounds the edge. If you have no ONE+ battery, a corded detail sander avoids that limit.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Call a licensed contractor if the trim may contain lead paint. Use a joinery shop when long solid-timber edges must stay dead square for fitted or commercial work. A mouse sander will not hold that tolerance, and stationary belt edge sanders are a different purchase, from about £978 including VAT at UK dealers. For a single shelf or a furniture edge you can inspect as you go, you can finish the job yourself if the arris still looks square.
