How to use a diamond cup wheel

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to mount a diamond cup on a 230 V or cordless angle grinder and take a lip off a concrete step. Reviews include people who took the guard off, and concrete dust is respirable crystalline silica. This is how to use a diamond cup wheel without treating those reviews as a method. The [diamond cup wheel comparison](/hub/sanders/diamond-cup-wheel) names the cups. Choice stays in the [diamond cup wheel buying guide](/hub/sanders/diamond-cup-wheel/sub/diamond-cup-wheel-buying-guide). Unplug, match the speed mark, leave the guard on, and control the dust first. Mount it with the grinder dead

Unplug a mains grinder, or take the battery off a cordless one. The hole you want on a hand-held grinder is 22.23 mm. Seat the cup between the flanges supplied with the grinder and tighten the nut with the pin spanner. Do not hammer the nut. QWORK reviews include a collar that needed a washer. Bujingyun's packs are listed at 22 mm, and reviews report a hole nearer 20 mm. If the nut will not seat, the cup does not go on that spindle.

The grinder must not outrun the wheel

Read the maximum rpm on the wheel and compare it with the no-load speed on the grinder's plate. The wheel's maximum has to be at least as high as the grinder. Most 115 mm listings here say 13,200 or 13,300 rpm, which sits near FEPA's 80 m/s class for a diamond dish cup of that diameter. HIGHDRIL swaps 8,000 rpm and 13,200 rpm. Yikuneng prints 13,200 rpm in one place and 15,000 rpm in another. SHDIATOOL also prints a recommended 8,000 rpm beside 13,200. QWORK and both Bujingyun packs list no maximum rpm. If the steel has no figure, do not guess from a 230 V label.

Leave the guard on

UK reviews describe removing the guard so the cup can lie flat on a floor. That is a reported mistake, because a diamond cup can shed a segment. Do not grind with the outer edge of the cup. Tipping the grinder so the rim digs is how a cup grabs. Keep both hands on the machine, including the side handle. The SHDIATOOL cup in this set is about 470 g, and reviewers mention the balance on a small grinder.

Concrete dust needs extraction and a mask

Grinding concrete or mortar releases respirable crystalline silica. HSE's workplace exposure limit is 0.1 mg/m³ over eight hours, with on-tool extraction at M or H class and respiratory protection at APF 20, which means a sealing FFP3 or P3 filters. A household machine with a HEPA bag is not an M-class extractor. Water is HSE's preference on suitable stone tools, in the ST3 note, and only if the grinder is built for it. The shroud that sometimes will not meet a low cup is part of the diamond cup wheel for a concrete floor page.

When to stop and call someone else

Stop when the area is a whole slab, the depth is unknown, or you cannot set up extraction and a proper mask. Five cups on one uneven floor, which one BRSCHNITT turbo review describes, is where an angle grinder has stopped being the right machine. At work, employers come under PUWER 1998. HSE's HSG17 is the guide, and there is no statutory refresher interval. Pattern choice is on the turbo row versus double row page.

Common questions

How do I mount the cup?
Unplug the grinder or remove the battery. Check the cup, seat it on the correct flanges, and tighten the nut with the pin spanner. Do not hammer the nut. The bore to match is 22.23 mm. Run a few seconds with no load and the guard on, clear of the floor. Stop if the wheel vibrates. A washer on a loose collar means the fit is already wrong.
Can I remove the guard if it will not sit flat?
Leave the guard on. Reviews that describe taking it off are a warning, not a method. If the guard blocks a flat pass, use a different shroud or a machine built for floor grinding. A diamond cup can shed a segment. Forcing the rim into the concrete to get the face down is a separate way to lose control.
What mask and extractor do I need for concrete?
HSE's grinding guidance asks for on-tool extraction at M or H class and respiratory protection at APF 20, typically a sealing FFP3. The workplace exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica is 0.1 mg/m³ over eight hours. A household vacuum with a HEPA bag is not an M-class unit. Keep the mask on after you lift the tool, because the dust does not stop when the wheel does.
Can I use water on a 230 V grinder?
Only if that grinder is built for wet use. A wet or dry line on a cup describes the wheel. HSE prefers water on suitable stone tools, and extraction where water is not practicable. Most DIY 230 V angle grinders are dry tools. Soaking one to keep the dust down is an electrical hazard.
What if the listing's rpm figures disagree?
Use the maximum printed on the wheel, and only if it is at least the grinder's no-load speed. HIGHDRIL and Yikuneng contradict themselves on the product page. QWORK and Bujingyun do not state a maximum. A blank listing is not permission to fit the cup to whatever speed your grinder runs.
When does this stop being a DIY job?
When the area is a whole slab, the depth is unknown, or you cannot run M-class or H-class extraction and an APF 20 mask. A single lip is the scale these cups are reviewed for. At work, abrasive-wheel use is training for the employer under PUWER. At home that training statute does not apply, and missing dust controls are still the reason to stop.
