Gun safe for shotguns UK

Updated: October 2026

You hold a shotgun or a rifle on a certificate, or you have just applied, and the first results for a gun safe for shotguns UK are mostly small boxes. The gun has to stand in the cabinet, and the certificate still asks you to store it securely so far as is reasonably practicable. In the [grade 1 gun safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/grade-1-gun-safe), seven of the eight amazon.co.uk listings are pistol boxes. Only the KAER W396 is sold as a long-gun cabinet. The Products Compared editorial team checked the listings against the Home Office handbook, BASC’s security advice, and public police wording on 16 October 2026. We did not run a lab attack. Seven boxes are the wrong shape

A shotgun or a rifle needs internal height that clears the gun you own. Seven rows in this set are pistol boxes, and the short side on those listings runs from 2.2 inches to 8.9 cm. Public police wording, including the same text on Ask the Police and from West Yorkshire Police, describes a locked cabinet or a similar secure container for the firearm. That is a different object from a bedside box. Great Britain prohibits most short firearms, so this page stays with shotguns and rifles held on certificate. The pistol boxes can still hold documents or other small valuables. If your certificate names a shotgun or a rifle, leave those seven rows.

The KAER is a long-gun claim without a standard

The KAER W396 is the only row sold for long guns. The amazon.co.uk listing describes capacity for four or five rifles, an external height of 137.9 cm, a weight of 31 kg, and a price of £799.96. That height is the reason it is the only maybe. The same listing does not state BS 7558 or EN 1143-1 Grade I. The fixing fields conflict, so the bolt-down story is not settled from the attributes alone. US reviews describe thin steel. Those comments are not a UK attack test and not a decision by your force. Treat the KAER as an uncertified long-gun cabinet until the force has looked at it.

Cartridges and Section 1 ammunition are not the same duty

On a shotgun certificate the security condition covers the shotguns. BASC’s security advice, and paragraph 2.46 of the firearms security handbook, both treat shotgun cartridges as outside that statutory lock-up. Locking cartridges away is still a sensible habit when children or visitors can reach a cupboard. A compartment, a separate locked box, or another place the household does not browse can all do that job. Section 1 ammunition, which sits with a firearm certificate for a rifle, is a stricter duty. Paragraph 2.46 gives best practice as keeping it secure, preferably in its own compartment, separate from the guns. Ask the Police and West Yorkshire Police publish the same line. If you hold both, keep the two routines apart.

BS 7558 is what the handbook still names

BS 7558:1992 is the gun-cabinet specification the 2020 handbook still points forces towards for new cabinets. BSI records that the standard was withdrawn on 7 November 2025, and the handbook text has not been rewritten to match that date. Shops still print “tested to BS 7558/92” and “police approved” on cabinets outside this set of eight. Withdrawal leaves the certificate condition in place: secure storage so far as is reasonably practicable, as the Firearms Rules 1998 are applied through the handbook. There is no replacement number in that public text. Ask the firearms enquiry officer which construction they expect. If you are still an applicant, buy after that conversation. Drilling and the point where you stop are on the how to install a gun safe page. The cabinet-or-Grade-I fork is on grade 1 gun safe vs gun cabinet.

Common questions

Which of these eight can hold a shotgun?
Only the KAER W396 is sold for four or five rifles. A possible fit is separate from acceptance by your force. Measure the gun against the internal height before you order. The other seven are the wrong shape for a shotgun or a rifle.
Must I lock shotgun cartridges in the cabinet?
The condition covers the shotguns. Locking cartridges away remains sensible if other people use the house, and the handbook leaves the place as a practical choice. That choice sits beside the duty to secure the guns. It does not replace it.
What about rifle ammunition?
Section 1 ammunition belongs with a firearm certificate, and the handbook treats it more strictly than shotgun cartridges. Best practice is a separate compartment. Ask the Police allows that compartment inside a secure container.
Is BS 7558 still a current standard?
BSI withdrew it on 7 November 2025. The 2020 handbook still tells forces that new cabinets should conform to it, and that text had not been replaced when we checked. Ask your force what they now expect, and treat a shop badge as a claim you can ask them to confirm.
Will the police accept a 31 kg biometric cabinet?
Acceptance is the visit. It depends on the house, the guns, and the officer’s reading of the handbook. Show the officer the cabinet you propose. If you are still an applicant, wait for the visit before you buy.
