Fireproof safe or security safe: which test you need

ComparisonOctober 20267 min read

A fireproof safe or security safe answers one test each. Thirty minutes at 1,093°C is only a heat claim, and a steel cupboard can still show no fire time.

The will is in a card envelope, the passport is in the same drawer, and a few folded notes sit underneath. A fireproof safe or security safe is the fork in the product titles, and it is a fork between two tests. One records how hot the inside of the box stays for a stated time. The other records how the door and body stand up to tools. Paying for the first result leaves the second result unbought.

The Burg-Wächter FP 22 K on amazon.co.uk states 30 minutes up to 1,093°C. The Favor listings in that same four-product set state no fire time at all. The useful question is which failure you are spending against, and which certificate the page actually names.

Products Compared read the Burg-Wächter FP 22 K maker page, the EN 1047-1:2019 catalogue identifier, the Chubbsafes HomeSafe S2 30P page, the safe.co.uk FP22K page, and the amazon.co.uk listings in our fireproof, security, and Burg-Wächter comparisons, in October 2026. We did not run a furnace test or an attack test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

Choose a document box for paper in a fire, and a security cupboard when you want to delay someone who wants the contents. The FP 22 K states 30 minutes up to 1,093°C and has no EN burglary grade. The Favor boxes in this set state no fire time. These four listings do not publish both results.

A fire test and a burglary test

A fire test puts the unit in a furnace and records time and the temperature inside. Burg-Wächter's page for the FP 22 K ties its fire claim to UL 72 and an internal temperature under 90°C. The amazon.co.uk listing states 30 minutes up to 1,093°C and does not print UL 72. Both sentences are about heat. Neither is an attack on the door, and neither supplies a burglary grade the page has left blank.

UL 72 and EN 1047-1 are different documents. The EN 1047-1:2019 catalogue names the paper classes S 60 P and S 120 P. EN 15659 is the lighter European standard on home units, often written LFS 30P or LFS 60P. UL 72 Class 350, such as 30 minutes at 843.3°C on the Amazon Basics FP1401M listing, is an American paper class and says nothing about EN 14450.

Burglary resistance sits on another ladder. EN 14450 covers lighter cabinets at S1 and S2, and EN 1143-1 covers high-security safes. Sold Secure medals are a UK attack scheme with their own labels. A weight or a keypad does not place a box on those ladders. Thirty minutes at 1,093°C says nothing about tools, and an S2 certificate says nothing about furnace time unless a second document does. safe.co.uk lists an insurance rating of none beside the FP22K's 30-minute line. If the insurer named a grade, take the certificate.

What a document box usually claims

The Burg-Wächter FP 22 K is the document box in our Burg-Wächter set. On amazon.co.uk it is about £42.00, with 5.6 litres, a listed weight of 9 kg, a key lock, two keys, and a two-year warranty. Outside size is 41 × 28 × 16 cm, and the material line is Fireproof Polymer. Across 1,548 reviews it sits at 4.4.

The bullets say it takes documents up to A4. Reviews often say a flat sheet is tight or curls, and that a folder or envelope does not fit. Chamber height is 155 mm, so measure a card-backed envelope before you trust the A4 line. A fireproof safe comparison gathers chests that print a named fire test on the amazon.co.uk page, including models that name UL 72 on the listing.

The FP 22 K listing says Not Water Resistant, so a hose or a flooded floor sits outside the 30 minutes. The Amazon Basics FP1401M, about £35.49, prints UL 72 Class 350 for 30 minutes at 843.3°C and says waterproof without a depth or a duration. Floor screws up to 6 mm are not in the box, and the Master Lock L1200 at 6.05 kg has a carry handle with no bolt kit in the bullets. Screws can stop someone walking off with the chest. They do not print an EN grade.

What a security safe usually claims

The Favor S3 E is about £57.99, with a PIN, an emergency key, four AA batteries, 8.6 litres, and about 4.6 kg. The listing states no fire time, water resistance is Not Water Resistant, and the warranty field says no guarantee. The Favor S3 K and Favor S5 K also state no fire time. S3 and S5 are size steps, not EN 14450 levels S1 and S2.

The security safe comparison shows the same empty fire field. The Yale YSV/200/DB2 is about £30.43, 8.6 litres and 3.6 kg, with bolts in the box and no fire standard. The Amazon Basics 43 litre safe is about £75.25 and 17.1 kg, claims an 8-gauge door, and names no fire standard. A 2025 UK review says a burglary defeated it. Steel and a review file do not stand in for EN 14450 or EN 1143-1.

Fire words appear without a test name. The AltiKeep at about £79.98 lists a fireproof bag that several UK reviews say was missing, and one bag that arrived was called A5 rather than A4. The Aprxuvot at about £149.99 says fire and water proof in the title, and the table cites neither EN 15659 nor EN 1047-1. The Asylosss 6.6 litre safe weighs 2.3 kg at about £19.99, and UK reviews call the shell thin. Bolts still do not create a fire time. The Burg-Wächter safe grid keeps the fire box and the Favors apart.

Products that publish both

One model can carry a burglary grade and a paper fire class when the maker publishes both. Chubbsafes lists the HomeSafe S2 30P with EN 14450 S2 and EN 15659 30-minute paper protection together. A De Raat Combi-Fire example pairs EN 14450 S2 with EN 15659 LFS 60P. Both sit outside the four Burg-Wächter ASINs in this hub. This article quotes no pound price for either.

A shared digit, 30 or 60, does not make UL 72, EN 15659, and EN 1047-1 the same test. The Burg-Wächter four do not publish a burglary grade beside a paper class. The FP 22 K has a stated fire time and no EN grade on the listing. The Favor listings state no fire time. If a brochure says fire and burglary certified, ask which standard, which class, and which model number.

Which box for which job

If a fire would destroy a will, certificates, or a passport, and the cash is a smaller problem, buy a document box. The FP 22 K is the Burg-Wächter listing that states a fire time, at about £42.00, with a tight A4 chamber and floor screws that are not in the box. If you want UL 72 printed on the amazon.co.uk page, use the fireproof safe comparison and read the class, the minutes, and the temperature.

If someone might take cash, a watch, or the box, buy a security cupboard. Choose a lock you can still open next year, a weight you can move, and bolts the floor or wall can hold. Accept a blank fire field unless a time and a standard are printed. On the Favor S3 E, keep the emergency key outside the box. A safe comparison sorts a document chest from a lockable cupboard, and the category name certifies neither.

If you need both jobs, leave this four-ASIN set. Ask for EN 14450 or EN 1143-1, and ask again for EN 15659 or EN 1047-1 with a paper class, on the same model. The HomeSafe S2 30P and the De Raat example show the pairing exists. Set the envelope against the interior size, and read the water field beside the fire field. Not Water Resistant is not a hose claim. A waterproof line with no depth and no duration is unfinished.

Common questions

Does 30 minutes at 1,093°C mean burglary protection?
Thirty minutes at 1,093°C is the heat sentence on the amazon.co.uk listing for the Burg-Wächter FP 22 K, and that listing does not print EN 14450 or EN 1143-1. Burg-Wächter's page ties the claim to UL 72 and an internal temperature under 90°C. safe.co.uk lists an insurance rating of none on that chest. A burglary grade has to appear on its own certificate for that model.
Is UL 72 the same as EN 1047-1?
UL 72 and EN 1047-1 are different documents. UL 72 is the American fire test on some amazon.co.uk chests, including Class 350 lines such as 30 minutes at 843.3°C. The EN 1047-1:2019 catalogue names the paper classes S 60 P and S 120 P. A matching number of minutes does not turn one certificate into the other, so read the standard name and the class on the model you are buying.
What is EN 15659 for?
EN 15659 is the European fire standard named on lighter storage units for a paper class. On the Chubbsafes HomeSafe S2 30P it appears as 30-minute paper protection beside EN 14450 S2. On a De Raat Combi-Fire example it appears as EN 15659 LFS 60P. Those labels do not replace S1, S2, or an EN 1143-1 grade, and they differ from EN 1047-1 classes S 60 P and S 120 P.
Can one product have both a burglary grade and a paper fire class?
Yes, when the maker publishes both results for that model. Chubbsafes lists the HomeSafe S2 30P with EN 14450 S2 and EN 15659 30-minute paper protection, and a De Raat Combi-Fire example pairs EN 14450 S2 with EN 15659 LFS 60P. Those units sit outside the four Burg-Wächter ASINs here, and this page quotes no price for them. The FP 22 K states a fire time with no EN burglary grade, and the Favor listings state no fire time.
Are the Favor boxes in this hub's Burg-Wächter set fire tested?
The Favor listings in this set do not state a fire time. The Favor S3 E is about £57.99 on amazon.co.uk, with a PIN, an emergency key, and about 4.6 kg, and the fire field is empty. The Favor S3 K and Favor S5 K match it on that point, and water resistance is Not Water Resistant. S3 and S5 in the names are size steps, not EN 14450 levels S1 and S2.
Will paper survive hose water?
The FP 22 K listing sets water resistance to Not Water Resistant, so the 30-minute heat sentence is not a claim about hose water or a flooded floor. Some chests say waterproof and still omit a depth and a number of hours, including the Amazon Basics FP1401M on flood submersion. Read the water field beside the fire field. If it names no depth and no duration, the listing has not told you the paper will survive a soaking.
Which comparison should I open for each job?
Open the fireproof safe comparison when the job is a stated fire time for paper, and read the class, the minutes, and whether a folder fits. Open the security safe comparison when the job is a lockable cupboard. The Burg-Wächter safe page holds the FP 22 K beside the Favor boxes. The wider safe sort chooses a document chest or a cupboard before you look at grades.
