Carrot seeds buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a raised bed in a British garden, or a trough on a patio, and amazon.co.uk has turned carrot seeds into a row of similar orange packets. A carrot seeds buying guide is the order of checks before you add one to the basket: the root shape your soil can finish, a seed count that the title and the bullet can both support, then the words organic and high germination, then the price against the size of the review sample. The [carrot seed comparison](/hub/root-vegetables/carrot-seeds) holds the twelve listings from 15 October 2026. This page is the sequence, not a second table. We did not sow a trial row.

Our top picks

On this page

Start with the root, not the star rating

The first fact that changes the purchase is the shape the seller names, because a long root forks when it hits a stone, a pan, or heavy clay, and a short stump root is the one the Royal Horticultural Society points to for that ground. Early Nantes, on the Meldon packet at £3.10, is described as a blunt root with a small core, ready in a seller estimate of 65–75 days. Chantenay Red Cored, at £2.95, is described as a stump of about 1.5 inches across in about 80 days. If your fork stops at 15 cm in stony soil, skip the blunt Nantes root even when its stars look stronger. Autumn King 2 at £2.34 is a tapering maincrop the bullets say will store, which is a different job from an early summer root. Read Nantes or Chantenay carrots before a 4.4 becomes permission to sow the wrong outline.

Read the seed count in two places

Open the title, then the pieces line or the bullet that states a number. On the Early Nantes single, the title says 1,000 seeds and the pieces line says 2,000. A second Early Nantes listing at the same £3.10 reverses the mismatch: the pieces line says 1,000 and a bullet says 2,000. A review can be a better count than the title, though it is still one person’s envelope. On the rainbow mix at £3.60, with 4.1 from 191 reviews, a repeated complaint is that the packet held a fraction of the 250 seeds named on the listing.

Treat organic and high germination as wording

Organic on a title is a claim you can check for a control-body name, and in this set that name is often missing. The Early Nantes listing at £3.05 puts organic in the title, with 4.1 from 31 reviews, and names no certification body. Just Seed Sugarsnax 54 F1, at £1.55 for a stated 150 seeds, cites Defra Registered 7291 and Organic Registration AP23164 in a bullet. We have not checked those numbers, and the title does not say the seed is certified organic. The Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 include a class called standard seed.

Use the price band, then the review sample

In these listings the cheap end sits under £2: Red Samurai at £1.45, Sugarsnax 54 at £1.55, Unwins Sugarsnax at £1.78, and Mr Fothergill’s Carrot Large twin at £1.98 with no star line and no seed count. The Early Nantes twin is £5.82. A 5.0 from two reviews, the Unwins line, is not stronger than 4.3 from 267 on the Early Nantes single. The twin pack shows the same 4.3 from 267, and the same review names and dates, as the £3.10 single. Do not add 267 and 267.

What to open next

If the shape is still open, use the Nantes and Chantenay page before you chase a lower price. For one conditional pick, the best carrot seeds page names the Early Nantes single for a blunt early root and Autumn King 2 at £2.34 for a storage maincrop, each with a reason to skip it. Several Meldon bullets say to cover seed with about 3 cm, while the RHS says about 1 cm, so that conflict belongs on the how to sow carrot seeds page once the packet is chosen. The Carrot Large twin at £1.98 never names Autumn King 2, never states a count, and never answers the pot question. Price is the last check, after shape and a count you can believe. Common questions

What should I check before I buy carrot seeds?
Check the named root against your soil, then the seed count in the title and in the bullet, then whether organic names a control body, then the price against how many reviews sit under the stars.
Why do the title and the bullet disagree on seed count?
The listing fields are filled separately, and in this set they were not reconciled. Treat the count as unknown until you open the packet.
Is a 5.0 from two reviews better than a 4.3 from 267?
No. Unwins Sugarsnax is 5.0 from two reviews at £1.78, and the Early Nantes single is 4.3 from 267 at £3.10. Two pleased buyers can fill a five-star line. They do not outweigh a sample that includes failed germination and damp packets.
Does organic on the attribute line mean certified seed?
Not by itself. The £3.05 Early Nantes title says organic and names no control body. Heirloom or GMO-free on an attribute line is not a certificate in these listings. A registration number on the Sugarsnax 54 bullet is a claim we have not verified.
What does standard seed mean for a garden packet?
Standard seed is a category in the UK Seed Marketing Regulations 2011. It is a legal class for marketed vegetable seed, not a slogan for good or poor quality. You still need a believable count and a real review sample before the price decides the basket.
