Copper brake pipe: these coated kits are not Kunifer

Updated: October 2026

The rigid pipe along the sill is scabbed with rust, and the listing you have open says copper. Copper brake pipe on amazon.co.uk is often copper-coated steel, and one kit in this set rusted inside a year. The material line decides the buy. The three kits sit in the [copper pipe comparison](/hub/rods-and-pipes/copper-pipe). The Products Compared editorial team used the MOT inspection manual, Automec’s flare notes, and the amazon.co.uk listings of 15 October 2026. We did not fit a pipe to a car. Copper, copper-coated, and copper-nickel

Three materials share the word copper, and only copper-nickel is the salt-resistant tube people mean by Kunifer. The MOT manual does not name a forbidden alloy, and solid copper is still not the repair this page recommends. Copper-coated or copper-plated steel rusts once a flare, a clip rub, or a stone breaks the coating. Copper-nickel, alloy C70600, can still be fitted badly. None of the three kits states Kunifer, EN 12449, or MOT approval. Telling the families apart is the copper pipe buying guide.

What these three kits actually are

LZYDKH, at £14.99, is 25 ft of 1/4 inch line, also written as 6.35 mm, with a 0.71 mm wall and 16 flare nuts. The material line says copper-coated alloy. There is no customer-review line, so rust and flare quality are unknown. MospdyGear is also 25 ft of 1/4 inch, at £16.99. The material line says copper-plated iron while the title says iron-plated copper, with a printed 1.5 mm wall and 16 nuts. The rating is 4.0 from eight reviews and there is no review text. A thicker printed wall is not proof the pipe resists salt. PANTSLINE is £21.99 for 32.8 ft, with 20 nuts and 12 extra fittings. The title says 3/16 inch and the technical details say 0.38 inch. The rating is 3.8 from 13 reviews. The plumbing top pick on best copper pipe is not a brake line.

Rust, flares, and the MOT

UK reviews of the PANTSLINE kit say the pipe was rusty after about 10 to 12 months, and one Volvo V40 repair then failed an MOT. The MOT manual rejects a rigid brake pipe when corrosion or damage has reduced the wall by about one third, about 0.25 mm on typical hydraulic pipe. A hydraulic leak is a dangerous defect. Ferrule compression joints are not an acceptable repair, which is why a water-pipe olive does not belong on the sill. Automec, a UK brake-pipe maker, says copper and copper-nickel need a double flare, OP1 then OP2, while older steel often used a bubble flare. That is the maker’s fitting rule, not a clause in the MOT manual.

Do this only if you can flare and bleed

Do the job yourself only if you can cut, flare, clip, and bleed, then check for a leak. If you cannot, a garage should take it. 15 mm plumbing copper will not flare into these nuts.

Common questions

Is copper-coated brake pipe the same as copper-nickel?
No. Copper-coated or copper-plated pipe is steel or iron with a surface coating. Copper-nickel, including C70600, is the Kunifer-type alloy people specify for salt. LZYDKH states copper-coated alloy, MospdyGear states copper-plated iron, and PANTSLINE is described as copper-coated. None of the three states Kunifer.
Will a coated pipe rust?
It can, once the coating is broken. UK reviews of the PANTSLINE kit say the pipe was rusty after about 10 to 12 months, and one Volvo V40 repair failed an MOT on that replaced pipe. The other two kits have no review text, so their rust record is unknown rather than clean. A coating claim on the title is not a corrosion test.
What does the MOT actually fail?
The manual rejects rigid pipe when corrosion or damage reduces the wall by about one third, about 0.25 mm on typical hydraulic pipe. A hydraulic leak is dangerous. Poor clipping is a minor if the pipe is inadequately supported, and a major if it is likely to detach or be damaged. The manual does not name a banned alloy.
Double flare or bubble flare?
Automec says copper and copper-nickel need a double flare, OP1 then OP2, and that older steel often used a bubble flare. That is a maker’s instruction, not a statute. Match the flare to the union on the car. A tool that will flare one of these coils does not prove the seat is the right shape.
Why do the PANTSLINE diameter fields disagree?
The title says 3/16 inch and the technical details say 0.38 inch. Those sizes are not the same, and the page does not resolve them. Measure the old pipe before you rely on either figure. The 1/4 inch kits at least state 1/4 inch without a second, conflicting diameter.
Can I repair a brake pipe with a compression olive?
No. The MOT manual says ferrule compression joints are not an acceptable repair on a rigid brake pipe. The olive used on 15 mm plumbing copper is that kind of joint. Brake pipe needs a flare into the correct nut, clipped so the pipe cannot move onto a sharp edge.
Should I do this myself?
Only if you can flare the pipe to the union, clip it, bleed the brakes, and confirm there is no leak. If you cannot, use a garage. A hydraulic leak is classed as dangerous. 15 mm plumbing copper is the wrong diameter, and a soldered water joint is not a brake flare. This page does not include a vehicle-by-vehicle tutorial, and it does not quote a labour price.
