Peat-free compost for raised beds and the words that count

Updated: October 2026

You are filling a new raised bed, and you want peat-free compost for raised beds, because you were told the 2024 retail ban already took peat off sale. This page checks that story against the six amazon.co.uk listings in our [raised bed compost comparison](/hub/raised-beds-greenhouses-and-compost/raised-bed-compost). A peat bag can still be sold in October 2026, and none of these titles say peat-free. The Products Compared editorial team checked the titles and bullets on 16 October 2026 against the listings and public UK sources, without a laboratory test. What the law is in October 2026

On 27 August 2022, GOV.UK announced a ban on horticultural peat sales, with the retail trade in view for 2024, to protect England's peatlands. Parliament has not enacted it. In October 2026 peat compost can still be sold in the UK. A 50-litre bag still on sale this autumn is a lawful purchase. Nothing in the 2022 announcement makes that bag peat-free.

The words that count

If the bag does not say peat-free, the Royal Horticultural Society says it most likely is not. Organic and environmentally friendly do not mean the peat was left out. Peat-reduced means peat remains, in a smaller share than before.

This set against that rule

None of the six amazon.co.uk titles say peat-free, so skip the set if those words are your rule. Munnie's only peat line is the reduction sentence. Laeto's bullets leave "Is it peat-free?" unanswered. TerraGrade and all three Growmoor listings say nothing about peat. Another Growmoor ASIN, outside this set, says "high-quality peats". Match the ASIN before checkout.

Reviews and standards that do not settle it

On Laeto, one review says the delivered bags had no peat-free mark, while other reviews call the compost peat-free. The bullets never answer, so the listing stands. A customer's sentence cannot become the seller's claim. PAS 100:2018 is not a peat-free logo, and none of these six listings carry it. BS 3882 is a topsoil specification, so it cannot mark a compost bag as peat-free. Use compost versus topsoil for raised beds when the choice is the material in the bed.

If the bed still needs organic matter

The RHS points you to garden compost, leafmould, or well-rotted manure, and away from spreading bagged potting compost on beds. Depth, and how far the level sinks after a season, belongs on the how to fill a raised bed page. Take one of these six only if peat-free can stay unstated. If those words are compulsory, leave the set.

Common questions

Is it illegal to sell peat compost in the UK in October 2026?
No. GOV.UK announced a retail ban on 27 August 2022, with 2024 in view, and Parliament has not enacted it. In October 2026 a peat bag can still be sold. Baroness Hayman's letter of 29 January 2026 and Mary Creagh's Defra answer of 19 March 2026 both put legislation at "when parliamentary time allows". The Defra answer adds that a new impact assessment would be required. Neither text gives a start date.
What words must be on the bag?
You need the words peat-free on the bag and in the amazon.co.uk title or bullets. The Royal Horticultural Society says that if the bag does not say peat-free, it most likely is not. Read the title, then the bullets, before a photograph of a full bed sways you. Organic, eco-friendly, or a raised-bed label leaves the peat question open. If peat-free is missing, treat the listing as not stated.
Does organic, eco-friendly, or peat-reduced mean peat-free?
No. Organic is a production claim and says nothing about peat in the mix. Eco-friendly and environmentally friendly are lines the RHS does not treat as a peat-free mark. Peat-reduced means peat is still used, in a lower amount than before. Munnie's bullet, "enabling the reduction of the use of peat", belongs with that reduction language. Keep it apart from a peat-free statement.
Can a review that says peat-free override a silent listing?
No. On Laeto, some reviews call the compost peat-free and one says the delivered bags had no peat-free mark, while the bullets leave "Is it peat-free?" unanswered. The listing is what you can hold the seller to. A TerraGrade or Growmoor review that guesses either way can make you cautious. It cannot fill a gap the product page never printed.
Does PAS 100 mean the bag is peat-free?
No. PAS 100:2018 specifies composted materials from source-segregated biowaste. It does not cover a home heap, and it is not a retail peat-free logo. None of these six bags carry it. Meeting that specification still says nothing about peat in a potting mix. BS 3882, the topsoil specification, does not print the missing peat-free line either.
Where do I go if I still want one of these six bags?
Open which raised bed compost in this set and buy only if a peat-free label is not your rule. None of the six titles say peat-free, so skip the set when those words are compulsory. If you want a bag for its volume or for the crop it is sold for, read who should skip each listing there. Leave reviews, and any other Growmoor ASIN that mentions peats, out of that decision.
