Cold frame ventilation

Updated: October 2026

You closed the lid last night because the forecast said frost, and this morning the inside of the cover is dripping onto the seedlings. Cold frame ventilation is the daily habit that stops that drip becoming mould, and that stops a shut lid in sun cooking the tray. Peter F. used Royal Horticultural Society guidance on venting, wind and bubble plastic, and the amazon.co.uk review themes in this category’s 20 October 2026 capture. This is not a lab test of airflow. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. What you are trying to let out

A cold frame holds a layer of warmer, wetter air over the compost. Overnight that moisture condenses on the cold glazing and falls back on the leaves. On a bright day the same sealed box heats up fast. The RHS answer is strict: open the lid on warm days. A small crack is enough in a chilly wind. A wide opening is what a clear April noon needs. Close it again before the evening if frost is still a risk. Ventilation is the daytime half of frost care. These unheated kits do not publish a frost temperature, and a lid left shut on a sunny day is the more common way to lose the sowing.

Props, twin lids and doors that do not count as vents

The hardware only helps if it stays where you put it. On the Spear & Jackson COLDFRAME1, UK buyers say the lid props are stiff and mounted on the outside, and that paint on the metal props blisters. The twin-lid Outsunny at £47.59 lists two top covers on a 100 × 50 × 36 cm frame, so you can crack one lid and leave the other closed. The single-lid Outsunny at £46.99 vents the whole box or none of it. Door gaps are not a clever vent. On the Outsunny three-tier, many UK reviews say the doors do not meet. The SG Traders cabinet lists four vents, and the repeated complaint there is opaque panels rather than a missing stay.

Condensation, bubble plastic and wind

Water in the morning so the compost is not sealed and sodden through a cold night. The RHS notes that bubble plastic inside a frame cuts light and needs airflow if you want to limit mould. Put it up for a cold spell, keep a vent path, and take it down when you are opening the lid wide. Peg a lightweight frame, because a lid propped open is a sail. The single-lid Outsunny pack is 4.4 kg and the twin-lid pack is 8 kg. On paving, where pegs will not hold, weight the base and lower the prop before you leave the garden.

A morning routine, and where it stops

On a mild spring morning, open or prop the lid before the sun is fully on the glazing. At midday on a clear day, open further. In the late afternoon, close up if the night will be cold. That sequence is the whole job. If you are away for several days in April, move tender trays indoors or ask someone to vent the box. Faulty props or a lid that never sat flat are a returns issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 22, which gives 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. The fortnight’s wider routine is on how to use a cold frame.

Common questions

When should I open a cold frame?
Open it on warm or sunny days, and keep it shut on frosty nights. The RHS treats that as standard, and uses a slightly open lid by day during about two weeks of hardening off. A small crack is enough in a cold wind. A wide opening is what strong spring sun needs. These kits have no frost-temperature claim, so a shut lid is not a promise against a hard frost, and it is a real risk of overheating after breakfast.
Are two lids better for ventilation than one?
They are better when you want to vent only part of the box. The twin-lid Outsunny at £47.59 lists two covers on a 100 × 50 × 36 cm frame, against one lid on the 100 × 65 × 40 cm Outsunny at £46.99. The twin lid is narrower, the review line is 4.0 from 121 rather than 4.3 from 271, and buyers mention assembly fixes. Two lids help only if both of them move freely.
Why are some lid props so stiff?
On the Spear & Jackson listing, UK reviews say the props are stiff and fitted on the outside, unlike the photo, and that the paint blisters. A stiff stay is a ventilation problem because you will stop using it. Check the prop on the first assembly, before you put trays in. If it will not hold the lid, that is a fault to raise under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a quirk to work around all season.
Does bubble plastic stop condensation?
It can hold a little more warmth in a cold spell, and the RHS says it cuts light and still needs airflow or you invite mould. It does not replace opening the lid. Fix it so a gap remains, take it out when you are venting hard, and do not tape the whole frame shut. Wipe drips off the glazing on wet mornings.
Do door gaps count as ventilation?
No. A door that will not meet, which UK reviews report on the Outsunny three-tier at 3.2 from 201 reviews, leaks when you need the box closed and still does not give you a controlled crack at noon. The SG Traders cabinet lists four vents, which are deliberate openings, and its own reviews focus on cloudy panels. Use a prop or a listed vent.
How does ventilation fit with frost?
You shut the frame at night when frost is possible, and you open it once the day has warmed, which is the same RHS pattern as hardening off. An unheated polycarbonate box moderates cold and can still lose plants in a hard frost, so fleece or a delay still matters. Venting is the part you repeat every mild daytime, including after a night when the lid was fully closed.
