How to use cut resistant gloves

Updated: 17 October 2026

You have a sharp tool ready, but the glove marked medium will barely pass your knuckles. That is not a minor comfort problem. A cut glove only helps when it fits, stays intact and is used for the hazard it was chosen to address. Learning how to use cut resistant gloves starts before the first cut and continues through washing and inspection. This page covers the fit, care and retirement evidence for the twelve products in the [cut protection gloves comparison](/hub/protective-clothing/cut-protection-gloves). It does not rank them, and it does not give one wash recipe for every fibre and coating.

Put on a glove that actually fits

Use credible seller size information, then check the received pair before work. Your fingers should not bunch at the tips and the wrist should stay covered. A tight glove restricts movement. A loose one can fold or slide. The reviews in this set are a warning pattern, not a universal size chart. Buyers say the Donfri 4X42D glove, the flintronic mesh kit and AovYoo can run small. The shared flintronic knit review pool contains a comment that medium felt very tight. NoCry fit comments go in both directions. Donfri QGA9 has one report of size L being too small for a size 9 hand and another saying it was a little large. Ordering up may solve one model. It is not a rule for all twelve. Food choices are in cut resistant gloves for kitchen work.

Listing fields that are not a size

Some listing fields are unusable as a size. The flintronic S page prints 20 x 20 x 10 mm, which cannot describe a glove. KAYGO shows 10 g for two pairs. When fields conflict, ask the supplier. The flintronic mesh kit contains one metal glove and two cotton liners, not a metal pair. Reviewers say the liner tightens the fit. If both hands need protection, one mesh glove is also a quantity problem. A cut-resistant knit does not replace a mandoline guard, a safe knife direction or training.

Wash only as that pair allows

Read the leaflet with your pair. Care lines disagree even inside one model family. If the leaflet and the marketplace page differ, ask the supplier before laundering. Several uncoated knits mention a machine wash or a dishwasher, then air drying. A NoCry review warns of shrinkage unless the wash stays cool. One flintronic page says no tumble drying. KAYGO size M allows up to 40°C and tumble drying up to 60°C. The size L page stops at 40°C and omits the tumble sentence. Do not invent that instruction for L. Donfri QGA9 says machine wash and no tumble drying. ZVLZR has no wash line. Ansell describes washing relevant HPPE products at no more than 40°C. A different CMT HPPE and PU glove says not to launder, because its cut level applies when new. Neither overrides your leaflet. Dishwasher wording on a knit does not put a coated palm in the same cycle. Performance marks are in the EN 388 buying guide.

Stop when the glove is damaged

Inspect before each use. Check fingertips, seams, the thumb web and palm. Greenham guidance says to discard holes, tears, thin spots and gloves saturated with oil. KAYGO and Donfri reviews describe black palm material peeling within days. A bare patch no longer offers the coated surface on the listing. Do not stitch or tape a cut and rely on the original marking. Replace the glove. A pair that has shrunk, stretched or become impossible to clean no longer matches its starting condition. For the next purchase, use the best cut resistant gloves UK shortlist with the failure in mind. A worn palm is a coating question. Thorns that pierced the yarn are a puncture question.

Common questions

Should I order my normal glove size?
Use it only as a starting point. Reviews say several models run small, but NoCry and Donfri QGA9 receive mixed fit reports. Check a model-specific chart where available and allow for the cotton liner in the single flintronic mesh glove. Return a pair that restricts movement.
Can I machine-wash every glove in this comparison?
No. The listings give different instructions, and ZVLZR gives none. Some knits allow machine washing, KAYGO M names 40°C, Donfri QGA9 forbids tumble drying, and another supplier’s HPPE and PU guidance says not to launder its product. Follow the received pair’s leaflet.
Can I put a coated glove in the dishwasher?
Do not infer that from dishwasher wording on an uncoated knit. Coatings, adhesives and care limits differ. Unless the manufacturer instructions for your exact coated model permit it, use the stated cleaning method or ask the supplier.
When should I replace cut resistant gloves?
Replace them when you find holes, tears, thin areas, failed seams, serious contamination or coating worn through in a way that changes grip or coverage. Shrinkage or stretching that spoils fit is also a reason to stop. Inspect before each use rather than waiting for an injury.
Is a glove safe if only the black palm coating has worn off?
You cannot assume it performs as sold. The liner may remain, but the grip and surface properties have changed. If the coating was part of the reason you selected it, take the glove out of service and replace it according to your workplace or task requirements.
Do cut resistant gloves replace safe tool technique?
No. Keep guards in place, direct the blade away from your body and use the tool as instructed. A cut rating does not promise puncture protection or immunity from every blade, and damaged gloves provide even less reason to take a risk.
