Petrol or cordless chainsaw

Updated: 16 October 2026

The search says petrol or cordless chainsaw, and a cable is the third real choice. On these amazon.co.uk listings, 16 October 2026, pick petrol away from a socket if you can store fuel lawfully, a corded saw by an RCD-protected socket, and a battery saw only when the right pack is in the box or already yours. The [Stihl chainsaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/stihl-chainsaw) holds the prices. Bar length is on [mini chainsaw or full-size chainsaw](/hub/power-saws/stihl-chainsaw/sub/stihl-chainsaw-mini-or-full). The Products Compared editorial team used the listings, HSE storage notes, and Electrical Safety First. No runtime was measured. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three ways to power the cut

Petrol keeps going while you still have lawful fuel, and it means mix, storage, and a start on level ground. A corded saw stops at the end of the lead. A battery saw stops when the pack is flat. Nobody timed these ASINs. If the logs are beside an outdoor socket, a lead is the simple answer and petrol is extra hazard. If the timber is at the bottom of a plot with no power, the lead becomes the problem. If you refuse both fuel and a lead, read the included-components line. The chainsaw buying guide puts this fork after bar length.

Petrol, the can, and the 30 litre limit

At home you may store up to 30 litres of petrol without telling the Petroleum Enforcement Authority. Plastic cans are limited to 10 litres and metal cans to 20 litres. Fill outdoors, and keep the can at least 4 metres from the saw when you start. STIHL UK states 50:1 for STIHL engines. A mix you make yourself may be unfit after 30 days. The only STIHL cutter here is the battery GTA 26, so that ratio does not belong on the Hyundai or the eSkde. The rear-handled petrol listing away from a socket is the Hyundai HYC6200X, 62 cc and 20 inches. The bullets do not name a chain brake. The eSkde CS62-S7 is also petrol and top-handle. HSE reserves that handle for trained arborists off the ground.

A cable, a UK plug, and an RCD

A corded saw needs a BS 1363 3-pin plug on 230 V, an RCD, and an outdoor-rated lead. Unwind a cable reel fully. Keep the cable behind you. A two-pin plug is a buying problem. A travel adaptor does not solve it. The Hyundai HYC2400E states 2400 W, 16 inches, 230 V, and a 12 metre cable. The chain brake is not named. The Oregon CS1400 names a chain brake, and its voltage row is blank. A 15 amp bullet is not a UK 13 A fuse. The HYC1600E title is 1600 W, 14 inches, and 3 metres. Starting checks are on how to use a chainsaw.

A battery only if the pack is real

The Hyundai HY40CCS350 at about £188.99 answers no fuel and no lead with two 4.0 Ah batteries and a dual charger on a 14 inch bar. A bullet names a chain brake. It has 4.6 stars from 20 reviews. Runtime was not measured. The Bosch UniversalChain 18 is worth buying only if you already own a Bosch home-and-garden 18 V pack. The title excludes the battery. The Seesii minis include batteries and are short-bar tools. The GTA 26 set is a 10 cm pruner. One UK review says the charger was a two-pin plug. Do not use a travel adaptor.

One line for each place

Away from a socket, with larger timber and lawful storage: the HYC6200X, rear handle, not the top-handle eSkde. Beside a socket: a corded saw whose title matches its rows. No fuel and no lead: the HY40CCS350, or the bare Bosch only when that pack is already yours.

Common questions

Should I buy a petrol chainsaw or a cordless one?
Buy petrol when the wood is away from a socket and you can store up to 30 litres at home in a proper can. Buy cordless only when the battery and charger are in the box, or you already own the matching pack. A corded saw is the better choice when an RCD-protected outdoor socket is beside the logs. No runtime was measured.
Where does a corded chainsaw fit if the question says cordless?
In the middle, whenever you can see a socket. The Hyundai HYC2400E states 230 V and 12 metres of cable. The HYC1600E states 230 V and 3 metres, at 1600 W and 14 inches on the title. The Oregon CS1400 is corded, and its voltage and lead length are blank. Cordless is not the default just because the search says it.
How much petrol can I store at home?
Up to 30 litres without notice to the Petroleum Enforcement Authority. Plastic cans go up to 10 litres and metal cans up to 20 litres. Fill outdoors, and keep the can at least 4 metres from the saw when you start. Above 30 litres, notification applies up to 275 litres.
What fuel mix do I use?
STIHL’s 50:1 mix is for STIHL engines. The only STIHL tool here is the battery GTA 26, so that ratio does not go in the Hyundai or the eSkde. Use the ratio in that saw’s manual. A homemade STIHL mix may be unfit after 30 days. Do not copy STIHL’s E10 sentence onto another brand.
Does the cordless saw include the battery and charger?
Read the included line. The Hyundai HY40CCS350 includes two 4.0 Ah batteries and a dual charger. Both Seesii minis include batteries and a charger. The Bosch UniversalChain 18 excludes both. The GTA 26 title names AS 2 and AL 1. One UK review says that charger had a two-pin European plug.
What plug and RCD does a corded saw need?
A UK 3-pin BS 1363 plug, 230 V, and an RCD, in the consumer unit or as a plug-in device. Unwind the reel. The Oregon’s missing voltage row and 15 amp bullet mean you confirm the plug. A two-pin or Schuko plug is not made safe by a travel adaptor.
Is a two-pin charger acceptable with a travel adaptor?
No. One of three UK reviews of the GTA 26 set says the charger arrived with a two-pin European plug. If that is the plug in your box, stop. A travel adaptor is a mistake, not a fix. The same rule applies to a corded saw that arrives with a non-UK plug.
