How to use a sliding mitre saw

Updated: October 2026

The saw is on the bench, the first length of architrave is marked, and you are not sure the scale is telling the truth. How to use a sliding mitre saw starts before the blade spins. Confirm the plate, fix the saw so it cannot walk, and square the blade to the fence with the plug out. Only then clamp a scrap. The joint is on the [skirting page](/hub/power-saws/sliding-mitre-saw/sub/sliding-mitre-saw-skirting). The listings are in the [sliding mitre saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/sliding-mitre-saw). Set the saw down and confirm the plug

Bolt or stand the saw so the rails clear the wall. A slider needs more depth than a chop saw because the head comes towards you. Do that with the plug out. Read the rating plate before the amazon.co.uk title. UK house sockets are 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. The R210SMS+ listing says 230 V in the title and 110 V in the field, and Evolution sells both. A 110 V plate means a transformer, not the kitchen socket. The JCB 254 mm listing prints no voltage at all. If the live pin is bent, the saw looks used, or the motor arcs, stop. Those are returns under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a setup you can square away.

Square the blade before you trust the scale

Unplug the saw. Hold an engineer’s square against the fence and the blade body, not the teeth, at the 0° mitre. If you see light, the pointer is a label. UK reviews on the £110 Einhell and the R210SMS+ include saws that arrived well out. Adjust the fence the way that saw’s manual describes. Set 45° only after 0° is honest, and check two offcuts that should form a straight line. Several Einhell reviews say the 45° stop stayed poor after adjustment. If the saw will not hold the angle, that is a faulty tool. The rails versus a fixed head choice does not change this. Both machines lie if the detent is out.

Make the cut

Clamp the work. The blade travels as well as drops, so support the offcut so it cannot close the kerf. Pull the head towards you with the blade still above the work, start the motor, let it reach speed, lower the blade, then push back through the cut. Forcing the slide, or starting already buried in the timber, is how the blade grabs. Let the blade stop before you raise the head. The laser is a preview. In this set it is often weak, covered, missing, or useless in daylight. Cut to your pencil line until a test offcut shows they agree. If the clamp is missing, do not freehand the board.

Dust, noise, and when to stop

The bag is not extraction. Reviewers say dust escapes on the Evolution, the Einhell and the JCB alike. At work, HSE guidance WD3 describes extraction at the guard and behind the blade, and WIS23 says you clean with at least a Class M vacuum, not a brush. Those duties sit on employers. We have no decibel figure for these seven saws. Stop if the guard jams, the motor arcs, the plug pin is bent, or the saw arrived looking used. Do not open the motor. Unplug it and use the return.

Common questions

How do I know the saw is square?
Unplug it and put an engineer’s square between the fence and the blade plate at 0°. Then cut two scraps at the stated 45° and see whether they make a straight edge together. Reviews in this set show saws that were far out on arrival, so the printed scale is the thing you correct, not the thing you trust. Use that model’s manual for the adjuster. If it will not hold the angle, return it.
Is the dust bag enough in a garage?
It catches some dust and it misses a lot, which is what reviewers report. It is not the extraction HSE describes for a crosscut saw at work, and it is not a Class M vacuum. At home that is not the same employer duty, but sweeping the pile into the air is still a poor idea. Use the port, where the saw has one, if you are cutting for more than a few minutes.
When do I unplug?
Before you square the blade, change or tighten the blade, clear a jammed guard, or leave the saw. Reviews include a loose blade bolt on delivery and a guard that jammed after a few weeks. Those are unplugged jobs. Also unplug if anything smells of burning or the motor arcs. Switching off at the handle is not the same as the plug being out, because a switch can fail.
What do I do if the guard jams or the motor arcs?
Stop and unplug. Do not keep cutting and do not open the housing to fix an arcing motor. A guard that will not close, a motor that sparks on light timber, a bent pin, or a saw that looks used are reasons to reject the goods. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route through the seller. One review in this file was still chasing that return after two weeks. Keep the listing and the photos.
When should I stop and get a professional?
When the saw itself is faulty, when the room is so far out of square that decorative skirting has to disappear into the wall, or when the material is structural steel. Also stop if other people will use the saw and you have no extraction and no training in place. A test offcut you cannot get square is a return, not a harder push on the handle.
