Sliding mitre saw buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are comparing corded sliders on amazon.co.uk, and every title shouts watts, a laser and the word sliding. A sliding mitre saw buying guide only helps if it says which number changes the board you can crosscut. Start with a published width in millimetres, then a voltage that matches a 230 V socket and a BS 1363 plug, then whether the head tilts one way or both. The seven listings in our [sliding mitre saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/sliding-mitre-saw) run from £110.00 to £199.98. Products Compared editorial team, 16 October 2026. We used those listings and public UK pages, not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the slide actually buys you

The slide, or drag, is the rails that let the blade travel through a wider board than a fixed-head compound saw. BuildWiz, a UK tool guide, puts a typical fixed 210 mm saw near a 120 mm crosscut and a slider nearer 230–300 mm. Treat 120 mm as that guide’s rule of thumb, not a cut we measured. Evolution’s UK shop states 230 × 65 mm for the R210SMS+. Einhell’s UK page for the TC-SM 2534/1 Dual states 340 × 75 mm. On amazon.co.uk those widths appear in the bullets. The £110 TC-SM 2131 Dual and both JCB listings never print a slide width in millimetres, so “sliding” in the title is not a capacity. The fork between rails and a fixed head is on our sliding versus compound mitre saw page.

Voltage before the plug

UK mains are 230 V, and the plug on a domestic saw should be a BS 1363 13 A plug. A 110 V site saw belongs on a transformer, not on the socket behind the freezer. Read the rating plate, because a title and a specification field on the same amazon.co.uk page can disagree. That clash is on the R210SMS+ listing, B07C9LG44H, at £125.95. The title says 230 V and the voltage field says 110 V. Evolution sells either motor, so the ASIN does not settle the box. The R185SMS+ is the listing where title and field both say 230 V. The JCB 254 mm states no voltage, so ask before you pay £167.99.

Single bevel, dual bevel, and the blade

A mitre swings the table. A bevel tilts the head. Single bevel means one direction, so you flip a skirting board for the other face. Dual bevel means the head tilts both ways, which matters for crown or coving. In this set only the two corded Einhell TC-SM saws are dual bevel. A 20-tooth or 24-tooth multi-material blade is a compromise for wood, plastic and the odd nail. Evolution states a 25.4 mm bore on the R210SMS+, while many UK wood blades are 30 mm. IEC 62841-3-9 does not cover steel and iron or abrasive wheels. For the R210SMS+, Evolution prints 6 mm plate and 3 mm box wall.

Cordless only if the packs are already yours

The Einhell TE-SM 36/210 Li Solo is £199.98 and the title says without battery. The highlight states a 65 × 310 mm cut. Power X-Change packs are a second purchase. One UK review wanted two batteries for continuous work, while another got through a day of skirting on one. If those packs are not already yours, the corded 230 V saw is the cheaper way to cut trim at home. Reviewers across this set say the bag misses. At work, the Health and Safety Executive expects extraction at the guard and a Class M vacuum, not a brush. Joints, rather than capacity, are on the skirting mitre page.

Common questions

Do I need a slider or is a compound saw enough?
You need the slide when the board is wider than a fixed head can crosscut. BuildWiz’s rule of thumb is about 120 mm on a typical 210 mm compound saw, against published slider cuts such as Evolution’s 230 × 65 mm. Architrave and narrow skirting often fit a fixed head. Decking and wide shelves usually do not. The fixed saw is smaller and, in that guide’s bands, cheaper, if the width test says you do not need the rails.
When is dual bevel worth paying for?
Dual bevel is worth it when you repeat a tilt and the board is too long or too awkward to flip, which is typical of crown and coving. For skirting you can usually turn the piece, so a single bevel is enough, though it is slower. In this set the dual-bevel saws are the two corded Einhells. The £110 one still needs a square-up, and it is not a site saw.
What tooth count should the blade have?
A 20-tooth or 24-tooth multi-material blade will cut wood, plastic and light metal, and it will leave a rougher face on painted trim. A 48-tooth or 60-tooth wood blade of the same diameter and bore is the cleaner edge. Match the bore. Evolution’s 25.4 mm bore will not take a 30 mm blade without the right bush, if a bush is even offered.
Is a cordless sliding mitre saw cheaper if the battery is extra?
No. The £199.98 Solo price excludes the battery and the charger. Add at least one Power X-Change pack, and a second if you want continuous cutting. It is cheaper than a corded saw only when those packs are already on your shelf. Otherwise you are comparing a bare tool with a saw that cuts on the day it arrives.
Can the saw cut mild steel?
Only inside the thickness the maker prints for that model, and not because a specification field mentions metal. The mitre-saw standard used here does not cover steel and iron as a general duty. For the R210SMS+, Evolution prints 6 mm plate and 3 mm box section. Structural steel, masonry and an abrasive wheel are outside this tool. A field that says masonry is not a blade.
