How to use a Makita jigsaw

Updated: 21 October 2026

Whether you have unboxed a Makita M4301 or clipped an 18 V pack onto a compatible body, isolate the power, fit a blade that matches the material, keep the shoe flat, and pick an orbital setting you can live with. This is how to use a Makita jigsaw on ordinary timber, sheet and light metal, not a ranking. Flooring chip-out is on the [Makita jigsaw for laminate](/hub/power-saws/makita-jigsaw/sub/makita-jigsaw-for-laminate) page. Models and prices are on the [Makita jigsaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/makita-jigsaw), from the 20 October 2026 amazon.co.uk capture. Peter F. did not run a cutting trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If the line is structural, stop before the trigger.

Before you switch on

Clamp the work so the offcut cannot drop onto the blade, and keep the kerf on the waste side of the pencil. Wear eye protection, because chips leave upward. The Health and Safety Executive’s wood-dust guidance is the UK reference for extraction. The M4301 has a dust port one reviewer hooked to a vacuum. Many copies only blow dust off the line. Unplug the M4301 before you touch the blade. On a cordless body, take the pack off. The 4329/1 is 110 V, so it belongs on a site lead, not a household 13 A socket.

Blade choice and how to fit it

Most cordless listings advertise a tool-free T-shank clamp and a coarse mixed set. Those blades clear softwood and tear veneer. UK reviews say the M4301 has no quick-change clamp, and the included B-10 cuts on the upstroke, rougher than a clean-cut T101B in straight mode. Use coarse teeth for thick softwood, finer teeth for ply, and a metal blade for thin sheet. The 4329/1 uses bayonet blades up to 1.7 mm thick. A T-shank from a copy’s pack will not necessarily lock in. Fit the blade with the power isolated and tug it. One M4301 review measured about 1 mm of drift over 25 cm and traced it to the blade holder.

Orbital action and speed

Orbital settings swing the blade so it bites harder. The M4301 and the 4329/1 offer three positions plus straight cutting. Copies claim three or four. Use straight, or the lowest orbital, when the edge will be seen. Use a higher setting on softwood whose edge will be hidden. A UK review of the M4301 says pendulum mode was faster and tore the edges. Let the saw reach speed before the teeth meet the work. If a metal blade blues, you are too fast or still on a wood blade. The 4329/1 states 6 mm in steel. An 8 mm claim on a copy is not extra capacity.

Bevel cuts and a straight guide

A 45° bevel is on the M4301, the 4329/1 and almost every copy title here. Check the angle on scrap before the finished piece. The shoe has to stay down. Lifting the nose twists the blade. A clamped batten beats a freehand rip longer than about 300 mm. One M4301 buyer found the guide rail missing, so do not assume a photo means it is in the box. Plunge only if the manual allows it and you have practised on scrap. Otherwise drill a hole in the waste. For a sink opening, cut the long sides with a circular saw and keep the jigsaw for the corners.

When to stop and use something else

Stop if the cut is a long straight rip and you own a circular saw with a guide. Stop on structural timber or anything you are not sure is load-bearing. Stop if you suspect asbestos, or if the top is quartz or sintered stone. Stop on metal beyond thin sheet. The 4329/1’s 6 mm steel figure is a listing maximum, not a reason to saw frame steel. Copies publish no vibration magnitude. Makita UK’s DJV182 page is where 7.0 m/s² in boards is published. The best Makita jigsaw page names one tool per job, and the buying guide separates the 230 V Makita from the bare copies.

Common questions

How do I change the blade safely?
Unplug a corded saw or remove the battery before your fingers go near the clamp. Confirm a T-shank, or a bayonet shank on the 4329/1. Seat the blade, lock it, and pull to test. On the M4301, reviews say the change is not the tool-free lever the copies advertise, so use the correct key. Do not start the saw to seat a loose blade.
What orbital setting should I use on plywood?
Straight cutting, or the lowest orbital position, for any face you will see. Higher settings cut faster and tear the veneer, which M4301 comments describe as torn edges in pendulum mode. Use a finer blade than the fast wood blade in the box. A higher setting is reasonable only when the edge will be hidden or sanded.
Can I plunge into a worktop?
Only if that saw’s instructions allow a plunge, the shoe can sit on its nose with the blade clear, and you have tried it on scrap. Otherwise drill a hole in the waste and cut out from it. For a sink opening, use a circular saw or router on the long sides and keep the jigsaw for the corners. A freehand plunge on the show face is how chip-out starts.
Why does the blade wander?
Typical causes are a blunt or bent blade, a clamp that has not locked, a shoe that is not flat, or pushing too hard. One M4301 review measured about 1 mm of drift over 25 cm in laminated chipboard and traced it to the blade holder. The supplied Allen key did not fit those screws. A batten cures freehand ripple. It does not cure a slanted blade.
How do I connect dust extraction on the M4301?
The listing says the saw connects to a dust extractor, and a UK reviewer used the included tube with a vacuum on ply, MDF and softwood. Fit the port before you start. Many compatible bodies only blow dust off the line. That is not extraction. Follow HSE wood-dust practice rather than relying on the blower.
