Hardpoint handsaw care: store it, then replace it

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have cut a run of chipboard, or pulled a saw from a damp site bag, and the teeth that felt keen last month now skate. A hardpoint handsaw keeps an edge longer in ordinary wood than a soft tooth, and you do not sharpen it at the bench. This page covers how the edge dies, how to store the plate, when to buy another saw, and what applies if it was already blunt in the packet. Prices stay on the [handsaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/handsaw). Peter F. used Axminster, Inter DIY and the amazon.co.uk listings read on 20 October 2026. There is no measured cut-life. What hardpoint means on these saws

Inter DIY's buyers' guide states that hardpoint teeth are hardened for a longer life and are not designed for routine resharpening. Axminster's note is the practical version: do not file them. None of the seven kept listings is a resharpenable Sheffield-style panel saw. Bahco's bullets name a reusable plastic tooth protector. The Predator row does not list a guard. Draper reviews mention a protector that is hard to refit, and the included-components field does not list one. Pitch and length sit on the handsaw buying guide.

Why chipboard and MDF finish the teeth

Axminster is specific: chipboard and similar sheet dull hardpoint teeth quickly because resin and grit wear the hardened tip. The Predator bullets still list chipboard and MDF. The OX title lists wood, MDF, plastic and insulation board. The listing says what the tooth will enter, not how many sheets it will survive. A finer pitch does not opt out. Fifteen TPI, or the 14 printed in the OX teeth row, still meets the same grit. Wet logs are a different failure. The Predator will not survive weekly chipboard either. If the plate still skates after a short run in clean softwood, replace the saw. Do not stone the tips.

Storage in a shed or a van

Store the blade where it cannot cut a bag or the next tool. Bahco's reusable plastic guard is the clearest claim in this set. Hang the saw with the teeth covered and the plate dry. Rust is a storage failure as well as a steel grade. The Vigaoc row says stainless steel, and one review says the saw rusted immediately. The Draper file includes a slightly rusty blade on arrival. In a van, the failure in this batch is bending. One UK review of the triple Predator pack mentions blades bending after heavy use. A kinked hardpoint plate is scrap.

When to buy another saw, and when the packet was already wrong

Replace the saw when the teeth skate in clean softwood after a fair stroke, when the plate is kinked, or when chipboard has rounded the edge. If you need one stiff 550 mm saw, the Bahco at about £13.85 is the top pick, not a pack of three Predators. The Draper at about £6.50 is the cheap second-fix replacement if you can accept snagging. A saw that arrives blunt, rusty or not as described is a quality point under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 9 and 11, with the short-term right to reject in sections 20 and 22. Wear after months of chipboard is not that claim. Which replacement matches the job is on the best handsaw page.

Common questions

Can I file the teeth on a Predator or a Bahco?
No. Inter DIY says hardpoint teeth are not designed for routine resharpening, and Axminster says not to file them. The hardened tip is the product. A file does not bring it back to the ground edge you bought. When the saw skates in clean timber, replace it. People who want a saw they can sharpen are shopping a different kind of panel saw from every listing kept in this comparison.
Why did MDF or chipboard kill the edge so fast?
Abrasive sheet wears the hardened tip. Axminster's hardpoint guide says chipboard dulls these teeth quickly, even though Predator bullets and the OX title list MDF and similar boards as materials they will cut. The saw can enter the sheet and still be a poor long-term cutter of it. A 15 TPI tooth is not protected by being finer. If sheet material is the weekly job, budget for a replacement rather than for a sharpening stone.
How should I store a hardpoint saw in a van?
Cover the teeth if you have the protector the listing promised, keep the plate dry, and do not stack weight on the blade. Bahco's bullets name a reusable tooth protector. The Predator row does not. One review of the triple pack reports bend after heavy use, and a kinked hardpoint plate is not trued up with a file. Wipe damp and sap off after wet timber. A materials row is not a storage plan.
Does a blunt first stroke mean the teeth are finished?
Some Bahco reviews describe a coating that feels dull until the first cuts wear it off. Give the plate a short run in clean softwood before you replace it. If it still skates after that, and the recent work was chipboard or MDF, the hardpoint is spent. Do not stone or file the tips to wake them up.
What if the saw was blunt or rusty on arrival?
Wear after chipboard is your replacement. A saw that arrives dull, rusty, or unlike the title is a description and quality issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 9 and 11, with the short-term rejection rights in sections 20 and 22. One Draper review cites a slightly rusty blade on arrival, and one Vigaoc review says the saw rusted immediately. Use the seller's returns route in that early window.
