How to use a hacksaw

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a frame and a blade, and the first stroke either skates or snatches. How to use a hacksaw is mostly clamp, tension and a straight push. This page is the sequence. It does not rank the twelve amazon.co.uk listings on the [hacksaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/hacksaw). If the blade grabs or only polishes, change pitch on [hacksaw blade TPI](/hub/power-saws/hacksaw/sub/hacksaw-blade-tpi). This follows UK listing notes and Health and Safety Executive guidance, dated 20 October 2026. We did not time cuts. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Clamp the work before you worry about the saw

A hacksaw blade is thin. If the offcut vibrates, the teeth walk, the kerf closes, and the notes in these UK files start to mention jump, jam and snapped blades. Put the pipe, bolt or conduit in a vice, with the cut line a few centimetres clear of the jaws so you are not sawing the vice. Support a long length so the offcut does not pinch the blade as you finish. Eye protection is not optional once the teeth move. The Health and Safety Executive expects suitable protection when work throws particles or there is an impact risk. Keep your spare hand away from the front of the frame. If the piece is gas pipe, stop. That belongs to a Gas Safe engineer. If you are near a live cable or a consumer unit, stop and use a qualified electrician.

Fit the blade, then start small

Teeth on a standard blade point forward, so they cut on the push. Fit the blade with the points facing away from the handle, then tension it until it does not twist under a light thumb. These listings publish no torque. Too slack and the blade flutters. Too tight and the thread or the pin is the next failure. 24 TPI is the UK retailer rule of thumb for typical tube and conduit. 32 TPI is for thinner material. 18 TPI is for thicker bar. Start with a short push on the waste side of the line, using a thumb as a guide only until a groove exists, then take the thumb away. Use most of the blade. Ease off on the return rather than dragging full pressure back through the kerf. Keep the bow upright. If the kerf closes near the end, support the offcut. Twisting the frame to finish the last millimetre tears pins out.

Change the blade when it is dull

A sharp bi-metal blade on clamped 15 mm copper should progress on every push. When you push harder to stay in the same groove, the blade is done. Heat, a shiny track and a high rub are the signs. Slacken the tension, wrap the old blade, and bin it. A bare blade in a toolbox cuts hands later. If the frame came with one blade only, which is the Stanley and Hilka pattern, the spare is a separate 300 mm bi-metal blade of the right pitch. The red AIRAJ contents line names ten blades, which helps only if 32 TPI matches the job. A junior frame does not take a 300 mm blade. If the adjuster will not hold, stop. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a frame that cannot hold a blade as described is a faulty good. Frame choice, if this one will not tension, is the hacksaw buying guide.

Where the manual saw should be put down

Use that sequence for clamped pipe, bolts, conduit and thin sheet: fix the work, point the teeth forward, tension until the blade is straight, cut on the push, ease the return, and change a dull blade. It fails when you cannot clamp, when the cut is overhead, or when you need a long straight rip. A powered saw is the next tool then. If the bow will not fit the space, size class is junior hacksaw vs hacksaw.

Common questions

Which way do hacksaw teeth face?
On a conventional blade they point away from the handle, so the cut happens on the push. Fitted backwards, they polish on the push and snatch on the return. Some specialist blades cut on the pull. Assume push unless the packet says otherwise.
Why does the blade jump on the way back?
Usually the work is moving, the pitch is too coarse for a thin wall, or you are pressing on the return. Clamp the piece, ease off as you draw back, and fit a finer blade if the teeth catch. A loose tension screw produces the same bounce.
How do I know the blade is blunt?
You push harder, the groove looks shiny, and the frame heats at the cut. On a small copper pipe that change shows up within a short spell of sawing. Swap the blade then. A dull bi-metal blade does not sharpen usefully with a file at home.
Can I saw without a vice?
You can, and the cut gets worse as soon as the offcut vibrates. A clamp on a bench is enough for DIY. Pressing tube against your knee is not. Overhead and one-handed cuts are where a hacksaw stops being the right tool.
What should I do with a snapped blade?
Stop, slacken what is left, and pick the pieces out with care. Wrap them before they go in the waste. Look at why it went: a pinching kerf, a twisted finish, a coarse pitch in thin sheet, or a frame that was over-tightened. If the frame itself cracked, retire it.
Do I need goggles for one bolt?
Yes if the teeth can throw a chip or the blade can snap, which is the normal case even on a bolt. The Health and Safety Executive frames eye protection around the particle and impact hazard, not around how long the job takes. Put the glasses on before the first stroke.
