Hacksaw buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are at a clamped copper pipe or a length of conduit, and the saw in the drawer skates across the metal. A hacksaw buying guide should settle the frame, the tension and the blade before you compare brands. The [hacksaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/hacksaw) ranks the amazon.co.uk listings in this set. This page is the decision in front of that table: 300 mm or shorter, how the blade is tightened, and which tooth count matches the wall. Prices are shelf figures from those listings, in GBP, captured for 20 October 2026. We did not run a workshop test. Start with the cut, not the kit

Most home metal cuts are tube, studding, bolts and thin sheet. A frame for a 300 mm (12 inch) blade covers that work if you can clamp the piece and pull a straight stroke. The Stanley 1-15-122, the red AIRAJ 300 mm saw and the Bahco 317 title all sit in that class, from £9.95 to £16.99. UK retailer guidance, including Shark Blades, treats 24 teeth per inch as the everyday pitch for tube and conduit, 32 TPI for thin sheet, and 18 TPI for thicker bar. That is a rule of thumb, not a lab result. The Stanley listing states 24 TPI. The red AIRAJ table states 32 TPI, so a ten-blade pack at £16.99 is a bargain only if your metal is thin.

Frame, tension and the handle

Tension is the difference between a blade that tracks and a blade that flutters. The Stanley, both AIRAJ listings and the HAUTMEC HT0398 state a tension system. The Hilka 43900008, the YSUY junior and the WAIZHIUA kit do not. If the comparison cell does not state tension, do not invent a wing nut from a photo. The Stanley is a pistol grip at 554 g. Notes praise that grip and still record jump on the return stroke. Bahco's 317 is a straight frame at 463 g, with a bimetal blade in the contents line and 4.7 from 1,635 reviews. The black AIRAJ at the same £16.99 states 45° and 90° positions, but its length cell is 155 mm, so it is the compact set, not a second 300 mm AIRAJ.

What should be in the box

The blade is the consumable, and bi-metal high-speed steel is the usual metal-cutting specification on UK trade counters. The listing data for the Stanley names high-speed steel. The Bahco 317 contents line names a bimetal blade. The Bahco 319 contents line names only the frame, even though the title prints Sandflex. The red AIRAJ states ten spare blades. YSUY's title claims ten blades, and the contents line is empty. A title-only claim is weaker than a contents line. Pitch is on hacksaw blade TPI. Size class is on junior hacksaw vs hacksaw. Stanley's 4.6 comes from 6,672. Hilka's 4.7 comes from 15 reviews, so a high average on a tiny file can move.

When a different tool is the answer

Buy a 300 mm frame with a stated tension system and a 24 TPI bi-metal blade if the next jobs are clamped pipe, conduit and bolts. That fails if the metal is thin sheet, where 32 TPI is the rule of thumb, or if you need both a 12 inch and a 6 inch saw in one order. That is the Eclipse set at £24.65, with only 60 reviews. Stop if the pipe is gas. That is a Gas Safe job. Stop if the cable or the consumer unit is live, and call a qualified electrician. Eye protection is the Health and Safety Executive expectation when cutting throws particles. After the purchase, the stroke is on how to use a hacksaw.

Common questions

What size hacksaw do I need for home DIY?
For pipe, conduit, bolts and general metal, a frame that takes a 300 mm blade is the usual choice. Junior and mini sets, such as the £4.98 D.A.Y. pair, suit PVC, trim and tight spaces, and they are not a substitute for a full frame on steel bar.
Which TPI for copper or steel pipe?
Use 24 teeth per inch as the UK retailer rule of thumb for typical tube and conduit, whether the pipe is copper or steel. Move to 32 TPI if the wall is thin, and to 18 TPI if you are in thicker bar. Confirm the number on the blade you fit.
Are bundled blades as good as a Bahco Sandflex blade?
Not by default. The Bahco 319 title names a bi-metal 24 TPI Sandflex blade, but its contents line lists the frame only. Ten-blade kits such as the red AIRAJ give you spares. Treat a bundled blade as usable until it dulls, then replace it with a named bi-metal pitch.
Is a pistol grip better than a straight handle?
The Stanley pistol grip has the largest UK review file here, and notes praise the handle, with return-stroke jump still recorded. Bahco's 317 is the straight-frame alternative at £10.19, with no jump theme in its criticism list. Choose the grip you can keep square to the line.
Can a hacksaw cut wood or PVC?
PVC pipe is normal hacksaw work if the piece is clamped and the blade is fine enough not to grab. A hacksaw will scratch a dowel, and it is a poor timber saw because the gullets clog. Use a wood saw for anything longer than a notch.
How tight should the blade be?
Tight enough that the blade does not flap or twist under a light thumb, and not so tight that the pins or the thread are about to strip. These listings give no torque figure. If the adjuster jumps a thread, stop and fit another blade or another frame rather than forcing it.
