How to use a cordless jigsaw

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the saw on the bench, a pencil line on a board, and a clear idea of how a ruined edge looks. This is how to use a cordless jigsaw for a curve or a short straight cut in wood, plastic or thin metal: pack off while you fit the blade, work clamped, shoe flat, orbital matched to the material, and no extra force when the motor note drops. Prices and platforms are on the [cordless jigsaw comparison](/hub/power-saws/cordless-jigsaw). Peter F. used UK how-to guidance and the review themes in this set on 19 October 2026. Fit the blade with the pack off

Take the battery off before your fingers are near the clamp. SGS Engineering's jigsaw advice starts there, and it matters more on a cordless saw than on a corded one, because the trigger is live whenever the pack is clicked in. Seat a sharp T-shank blade in the holder until it clicks or the clamp closes, then tug it. If it pulls out, it is not locked. Ryobi buyers in this set say the first blade change is fiddly and gets easier after practice. The GST 18V-125 S names an SDS holder. Bosch DIY UK describes a blade that clicks into that style of holder. A screw clamp on an older saw is a different action. Do not mix the two and hope. If the blade will not load at all, stop. UK reviews of the CISSIYOG bare tool say the blade would not go in despite the instructions, and another says the blade sat left of the centre mark. That is a failed clamp, not a technique you can fix by pushing harder. A coarse wood blade is the wrong blade for a laminate face and for thin metal. For a curve in softwood, the wood blade in a branded box is the usual starting point, and a bent or blunt one wanders even when the line is straight. Put the pack back on only after the tug test.

Set orbital action and speed

Orbital action, sometimes marked 0 to 3 or 0 to 4, swings the blade into the cut so timber clears faster and a finished face tears. BuildWiz's trade guide keeps setting 0 for laminate, curves you care about, metal and plastic, and uses a higher setting for fast, rough timber. Ryobi lists four pendulum steps. The Bosch Professional bodies in this set list four stages. Einhell names a pendulum stroke without a numbered dial on the Amazon page. If your saw has no orbital control, you cannot choose. You can only slow down and use a finer blade. Speed is the other dial, and the public guides do not agree on metal. Bosch DIY UK says full speed for hard metal and a lower rate for plastic and aluminium. SGS says set orbital lower for metal and ease off if the saw strains. Default to the manual for the model in your hand. Where you have no manual, start orbital at 0, let the blade reach speed before it touches the work, and reduce the trigger if the teeth are rubbing rather than cutting. Forcing a 3 x 2 is already a UK complaint on a cheap kit in this set: the cut did not stay straight even with a premium blade. A higher orbital setting would not have fixed a shoe or a clamp. Laminate is stricter than ordinary timber. Leave that at 0 and move to the jigsaw kitchen worktop cutout page before you mark a sink.

Make the cut

Clamp the work so both sides of the line are supported, and check what is underneath. A cable, a bench dog or your own hand is a worse surprise than a slow cut. ToolStore UK's point is the practical one: if you are about to make a long straight rip, a circular saw or a track saw is the better tool. A jigsaw earns its place on a curve, a notch, or a short straight cut you can see. Hold the shoe flat. If the front of the shoe lifts, the blade twists and the line walks off. Bosch DIY UK says keep both hands on the saw and do not lift the blade out of the kerf until the blade has stopped. Start the saw and let it reach speed, then enter the cut with light pressure. You are steering, not pushing the motor through the timber. On a curve, relieve the blade. A tight radius on a wide blade snaps the blade or burns the side of the kerf. Narrow blades turn more easily and wander more on a straight line. Support the offcut. When the last centimetre goes, the waste drops, the shoe tilts, and the edge tears. If the saw stalls, back it out while it is still running, check the blade is sharp and the orbital setting matches the material, and clamp again. A dull blade and a bent shoe, both named in UK reviews of cheaper kits, look like a saw that will not cut straight when the geometry is the fault. Eye protection stays on for the whole cut. Bosch DIY UK also calls for ear protection. HSE's noise action values of 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A), and the 87 dB(A) limit, are employer figures. They are not a measurement of the saw in your hand, and one household cut is not an employer assessment. Wear ear defenders anyway if the cut is long or the room is hard. A dust mask does not replace extraction on MDF. Use the blower or the nozzle if the box has one, and still assume the air is dusty.

When you stop

Stop when the material is not a jigsaw job. Quartz and other stone worktops are cut in a workshop with water or suitable extraction, not with a DIY jigsaw in a kitchen. HSE's guidance on installing stone worktops is the limit, and this page does not add a method. Structural timber, steel that is part of the building, and any cut you cannot clamp, including overhead work, are the same kind of stop. If the blade will not lock, or the shoe is already bent, another pass will not improve the edge. Replace the saw or the shoe rather than compensating with pressure. If employees will run the saw long enough that vibration and noise duties apply, the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set a daily action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8) and a limit of 5.0 m/s² A(8). HSE's typical magnitude table lists jigsaws at 9 to 17 m/s². That is a prompt for an employer assessment, not a number you can turn into minutes for a Saturday cut. A householder's one opening is not that assessment. If the saw you bought cannot hold a blade, the cordless jigsaw buying guide is the next page, not a harder push on the trigger.

Common questions

Do I remove the battery to change the blade?
Yes. Take the pack off, seat the T-shank, and tug the blade before the pack goes back on. SGS Engineering starts its safety sequence with the battery removed. A cordless trigger is armed as soon as the pack clicks in, which is the difference from a corded saw you have unplugged. If the clamp will not accept the blade, as UK reviews describe on one bare tool in this set, stop. Do not hold the blade in with a finger and pull the trigger.
Which orbital setting for wood, and which for metal?
For fast, rough timber, a higher orbital or pendulum setting clears the kerf more quickly and leaves a rougher edge. For a face you want to keep, for curves, for metal and for plastic, BuildWiz's trade guide uses setting 0. Bosch DIY UK and other guides do not describe metal speed in the same words, so follow the manual for your model. Where you have no manual, start at 0, at a speed where the teeth are cutting, and ease off if the saw strains. A high setting will not straighten a bent shoe.
Why does the blade wander?
The usual causes in this set's cheaper-kit reviews are a blade that sits off the centre mark, a shoe that has bent, and pressure on a cut the saw is not making. A blunt blade and a shoe that is not flat do the same thing on a better saw. Clamp both sides, keep the shoe down, and use a sharp blade that has passed the tug test. A long straight rip that keeps walking off is a sign to move the job to a circular saw, which is ToolStore UK's distinction, not a reason to force the jigsaw.
How do I cut a curve without snapping the blade?
Use a narrower blade than you would for a straight cut in thick timber, keep orbital low, and let the saw turn instead of twisting the shoe. Enter at speed, with light pressure. If the blade heats or the note drops, you are asking too tight a radius of too wide a blade. Relieve the cut, or drill a turning hole, rather than leaning on the saw. This sequence is for a curve you can start from an edge.
Can I hold the wood instead of clamping it?
You can hold a tiny offcut for a second and still be wrong. The shoe needs the work to stay put, and your other hand is already on the saw if you are following Bosch DIY's two-hand grip. Clamp it. Support the side that will fall. ToolStore UK's advice to check under the board is the household version of the same rule: the blade does not know the difference between the timber and the cable clipped to the trestle. Unclamped overhead work is a stop, not a workaround.
When do I stop and call someone?
Call a fitter or a fabricator for quartz and other stone, for structural timber, and for any opening you cannot support. HSE's stone-worktop note is about silica and about cutting those holes before the slab reaches site, not about a finer jigsaw blade. Call someone, or change the tool, when the clamp will not lock a blade or the shoe has bent. A single DIY cut does not turn you into an employer, and it does not make stone safe.
Do I need ear defenders for one cut?
Bosch DIY UK tells you to wear ear protection and safety glasses for jigsaw work, and that advice does not wait for a measured decibel figure. HSE's 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) action values are for employers. There is no noise figure for every saw in this set, so none is invented here. For one short cut, glasses are the non-negotiable part, and ear defenders are the sensible extra if the cut is longer than a notch or the room is reflective. A mask is not a substitute for keeping dust out of the rest of the house.
