Circular saw for plywood

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to break down plywood, chipboard or a kitchen worktop, and the last freehand cut wandered by the width of the pencil. A circular saw for plywood fails on the guide and the support long before it fails on watts, once the blade can get through 18 mm. The Products Compared editorial team wrote this on 20 October 2026 from the ten listings and UK cutting guides. We did not run a lab edge. The [circular saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/circular-saw) holds the saws. Products Compared may earn a commission if you buy through an amazon.co.uk link, at no extra cost to you.

Why sheets punish a freehand cut

A sheet is wide, slightly bowed, and faced with something you can see across the room. The shoe of a circular saw is short. Any tilt and the kerf leaves the line and tears the veneer where the teeth exit. Eighteen millimetres of ply is inside every stated depth in this set, from the Ryobi’s 45 mm to the DeWalt DWE5615’s 68 mm. The BLACK+DECKER does not print a 90° depth, so do not assume it from the 37 mm at 45°. Capacity is not the scarce thing. A straight edge is. Homebuilding’s practical note is a scrap with a factory edge, clamped, with the saw shoe run against it. It works with every saw here, including the ones that only shipped a side fence. At home, a port on the GALAX PRO or the Enventor is not a class M vacuum. Do not dry-sweep the fine fraction. Diameter comes first on the circular saw buying guide.

Batten, side fence or track

A side fence follows the edge of the sheet. If that edge is bowed, the fence copies the bow. The GALAX PRO, both DEKOPRO saws, the Enventor, the Ryobi and the BLACK+DECKER ship that kind of fence, not a 2.4 m rail. Enventor’s laser is a line on the surface. One UK review found the AAA cells dead, and a laser still does not stop the shoe twisting. The Evolution R185CCSX is the only listing sold here with a track: 1,020 mm, three pieces, at £116.00. Evolution’s shop page states 64 mm free and 59 mm on the track. Reviewers say the rail must overhang because the shoe sits behind the blade, and the joins are a complaint. It will not register a 2.4 m sheet in one clamp-up. The two DeWalts do not share a rail. A UK review says the DCS391 is not track compatible. The DCS572N is the body reviewers put on a DeWalt rail, at 58 mm free and 54 mm on that rail, not on a Festool, Bosch or Makita rail. If you have no rail, clamp a batten that offset from the line. Whether that short track is the kit you want is on the best circular saw UK page.

Face, tape and tooth count

The teeth cut upwards at the front of the blade, so the face that chips is the one they exit. For veneer or a laminate worktop, put the show face down, and keep that face off grit on the bench. Tape on the line reduces tear-out. It does not replace a sharp blade. A 24-tooth blade, the default in most of these boxes, is a rough blade on laminate. Enventor also includes a 40-tooth blade, and its text allows laminate while forbidding metal and wet wood. A DWE5615 buyer fitted an 80-tooth blade for cabinet doors. That blade was theirs, not one in the DeWalt box. Evolution’s multi-material blade is not a reason to treat a chipboard worktop as metal. Plunge saws drop the blade mid-panel. Every saw in this set enters from an edge.

Keep the sheet from pinching

A sheet on one stool will sag, close the kerf, and pinch the blade. That pinch is kickback. Support both sides so the offcut can fall, which is Electrical Safety First’s point. Horses under the keeper and the waste, or a foam sheet as a sacrificial backer, are the two setups UK guides describe. The foam method is their practice, not a requirement. Set the depth about 5–7 mm through, on Machine Mart’s portable-saw guidance, and add the track if one is under the shoe. Evolution’s drop from 64 mm to 59 mm is the worked example. Start at full speed and do not twist back onto the line. MDF dust still needs a mask. A dust port is not extraction. If the guard sticks, the motor smokes, or the sheet is a structural deck, stop. Depth and the guard are on how to use a circular saw.

Common questions

Can I freehand a full sheet?
You can, and the edge will show it. A short shoe on a 2.4 m panel wanders. For a cupboard that will be lipped and painted, a careful freehand cut may be hidden. For a worktop or a veneered door, clamp a batten or use a track. The motor size does not straighten the line.
Is a side fence enough for plywood?
It is enough for a narrow rip off an edge that is already straight. It copies a bow if the factory edge is bowed. The GALAX PRO, the DEKOPRO saws and the Ryobi ship that kind of fence, not a rail. For a full-width breakdown, use a clamped straight edge or the Evolution track.
Which way up does a veneered sheet or a worktop go?
Show face down, so the teeth exit on the back. Tape the line, use a finer tooth than a 24-tooth rip blade if the edge will be seen, and keep the feed steady. Scratching the face on the bench is the other half of that choice, so the support under the sheet has to be clean.
Will the Evolution’s 1,020 mm track cut a 2.4 m sheet in one registration?
No. Three short sections do not become a 2.4 m rail. You move the track, and you watch the joins, which reviewers complain about. The shoe also needs the rail to overhang the start because it sits behind the blade. Longer tracks exist from Evolution. They are not in this box.
Can I put the DeWalt DCS391 on a guide rail?
A UK review says this saw is not track compatible, and the listing does not claim a rail. The DCS572N is the DeWalt in this set that is described as rail-compatible, on DeWalt’s rail, with their stated drop from 58 mm to 54 mm. Do not treat the two model numbers as the same shoe.
What tooth count chips laminate less?
More teeth, a sharper blade, and the show face down. A 24-tooth blade is the rough default in most of these boxes. Enventor includes a 40-tooth blade as well. An 80-tooth blade appears in a DWE5615 review for cabinet doors, as an extra the buyer fitted. Tape helps. It does not rescue a dull 24-tooth blade on a gloss worktop.
How do I stop the sheet sagging and pinching the blade?
Support the keeper and the offcut so the waste can fall and the kerf stays open. One stool under the middle is how the sheet closes on the blade. Horses, or a sacrificial sheet under the work, are the usual fixes. If the blade has already pinched, release the trigger and wait until it stops before you lift the saw.
