Bathroom wall heater IP rating UK

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a bathroom with a heater that says bathroom in a bullet, and you want to know whether that word is permission to drill. A bathroom wall heater IP rating UK is a splash claim plus a zone the manual has to name. It is not a patio weather mark, and it is not a wiring diagram. The product rows stay on the [wall-mounted radiant heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/wall-mounted-radiant-heater). The amazon.co.uk listings were checked on 16 October 2026 and were not tested in a wet room. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

IP is not a zone

IPX4, IP44, and IP65 are not zone numbers. IPX4 is a splash claim with no dust digit. IP44 adds a dust digit. IP65 is the dust-and-jets language patio bars use. Section 701 of BS 7671, as the SELECT bathroom guide describes it, sets a floor of at least IPX4 in zones 1 and 2, or IPX5 where water jets are likely, and only where the maker's instructions allow that zone. Herschel, on a Select XLS panel, states IP44 and aims it at zones 2 and 3, hard-wired, with the controls out of reach of the bath. That is a careful maker pattern, not a licence for an Amazon bullet that never names a zone. Herschel also prints 3 ma where the wiring rule is 30 mA. Do not copy that as the regulation. If you are choosing outdoor weather ratings, use the patio heater versus infrared panel page instead.

Zones 0, 1, and 2

Zone 0 is the interior of the bath or shower tray. Equipment there needs at least IPX7, a permanent connection, and instructions that say it is suitable. None of the heaters in this set is a zone 0 product. Zone 1 is the space above the bath or shower. Zone 2 is the stretch beside that, often described as 60 cm beyond zone 1. In both, the floor is at least IPX4, and the maker still has to allow that zone. Zone 3 is not a Section 701 zone. It is seller language for the rest of the room. Herschel and Ecostrad talk about zones 2 and 3 and keep zone 1 off the list. An Amazon title that says bathroom does not add your shower to zone 2. If the manual is silent, you do not have permission. Mounting heights are a different job, on the how to mount a wall infrared heater page.

What these listings actually say

The Nedis HTBA10GY is £34.99, IPX4, 600 W and 1200 W, with 4.3 from 434 reviews. It ships bare-wired, with no plug, for a fused connection, and it names no zone. UK reviews mention returns because an electrician was required. That is the clearest bathroom-shaped bar here, and it is still not a zone approval. The white Mylek at £99.45 and the grey at £99.99 state IPX4 and say a qualified electrician should install them. They name no zone. The smart Könighaus at £149.90 says IP44 for suitable bathroom rooms and names no zone, and one bullet still says 450 W against a 600 W title. The basic Könighaus at £121.90 lists bathrooms and captures no IP figure. A missing zone is a missing permission on every one of these rows.

Plug, fused connection, and the 2.5 m rule

Electrical Safety First, on Regulation 701.512.3, says ordinary sockets are not allowed within 2.5 m horizontally from the boundary of zone 1, apart from a shaver-supply unit. A shaver unit is not a heater socket. Circuits in a bath or shower location need 30 mA RCD protection. The Nedis bar arrives as bare ends. Hanging the bracket does not finish that connection. A panel with a 13 A plug still cannot use a socket inside that 2.5 m band. The wall mounted infrared heater buying guide separates the bar, the mica panel, and the patio tube. Who each heater is for sits on the best wall mounted infrared heater UK page.

Common questions

Is IPX4 the same as IP44?
They are both splash claims, and they are not the same string. IPX4 leaves the dust digit unstated. IP44 states a dust digit. The Nedis bar and the Mylek panels print IPX4. The smart Könighaus prints IP44. The extra digit does not create a zone.
Can I put this heater in zone 1 because the bullet says bathroom?
No. None of the kept listings names a zone. A bathroom bullet is a splash line, sometimes with a note that an electrician should install it. The basic Könighaus names bathrooms and states no IP figure. This set does not give you a zone 1 sentence.
Where can I put a socket?
Not within 2.5 m horizontally from the boundary of zone 1, if it is an ordinary 13 A socket. A shaver-supply unit is the narrow exception, and it will not run a heater. Those circuits need 30 mA RCD protection.
Why does the Nedis bar have no plug?
The customer note says the HTBA10GY ships bare-wired, with no plug, for a fused connection. UK reviews mention returns because an electrician was required. The £34.99 shelf price does not include that labour.
Do I need an electrician if I only want to hang the bracket?
Hanging a bracket is not the same job as connecting the heater. You still need someone qualified if the heater is bare-wired, if the room needs a zone decision, or if the socket sits inside the 2.5 m band. The Nedis bar is bare-wired. This page does not tell you how to wire the spur.
