How to use a radiant heater safely

Updated: October 2026

You have a freestanding halogen or quartz bar, or one is about to come out of the box, and the glow makes the job look simple. It is not a whole-room heater. It warms what it faces. This page is how to use a radiant heater safely for that short session: where it stands, what the tip-over pin does on carpet, when a smell is a stop, and when you unplug it. The bars in the [Vasner radiant heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/vasner-radiant-heater) are the Geepas GQH9106, the Warmlite WL42005, and the SONBION LSG13. All three state a tip-over switch. None states a thermostat or an IP rating. The Products Compared editorial team used those amazon.co.uk listings, UK review themes, and public safety advice from Electrical Safety First and the London Fire Brigade. This is not a lab test, and we have not read a Warmlite manual into this page. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set it up before you switch it on

Put the bar on a level floor where it cannot be kicked as you pass a desk. Look at the plug before you push it into the socket. A plug-in heater for a UK home should have a BS 1363 three-pin plug. If the flex is crushed, the plug is warm from a previous session, or the socket has been blowing fuses, stop. Electrical Safety First says to unplug a heater when the plug or socket is hot, buzzing, or crackling, and not to power a heater from an extension lead. Give it a metre. Electrical Safety First and the London Fire Brigade both use that clearance from combustibles: paper, furniture, curtains, bedding, and clothes. Sit at least a metre away yourself. A chair pulled up until your knees are near the grille is the ordinary mistake, because the heat feels useful at that distance and the fabric is closer than the rule. Do not dry a towel on the bars. The London Fire Brigade is explicit that clothes do not belong on a portable heater. The Warmlite states overheat protection as well as the tip-over switch, and it states 120 degree oscillation. The Geepas states overheat protection. Oscillation on the Geepas is only in the special-features field, so do not plan the layout as if the head will sweep. The SONBION states overheat protection and two heat settings, and it does not state the lower wattage. Choose the lower setting first if the listing gives you one. Who should buy which bar is on the best radiant heater page. This page assumes the bar is already the tool you are using.

Carpet, glare, and the grille

The tip-over switch is a pin or a pad under the base. It is there so the heater cuts out if it falls. A UK review of the Warmlite says that pin may not depress on carpet. On a thick pile the heater can refuse to run, which is annoying and is also the switch doing something like its job. The dangerous version is a coin, a fold of rug, or a book used to hold the pin down so the bars stay on. Do not do that. Move the heater to a hard floor, or accept that this carpet is the wrong surface. A manual for a different halogen model warns against high-pile carpet. That manual is not the Warmlite, the Geepas, or the SONBION, so the rule you follow here is the one-metre clearance and a surface on which the safety pin can work, not a 50 cm figure from another brand. Glare is part of using a halogen bar. The Warmlite’s tubes are bright, and reviewers mention it. Do not stare at the elements, and do not aim the swing at a screen you need to read if the reflection is the problem. Oscillation, where it is stated, moves the beam. It does not make the heater safe to park against a curtain. The grille is not a rail. One UK review of the SONBION describes fabric smoking on the grille. If a sleeve, a throw, or a towel touches the guard and you see smoke or smell scorched cloth, switch the heater off at the socket and unplug it. Do not leave it running to burn off the mark. Let it cool before you move it, which is the London Fire Brigade’s instruction, and do not put it back into service until you know the fabric is gone and the guard is intact. If the flex has melted, that is an electrician or a replacement, not another evening of use.

Smell, heat levels, and when to unplug

A short new-heater smell can happen when a heater is first used, if the room is ventilated. That sentence comes from a quartz heater manual that is not one of these three ASINs. Use it only as a pattern, not as evidence that the Warmlite, Geepas, or SONBION will smell and then be fine. Smoke, melted fabric, a smell that does not fade, or a socket that grows hot means unplug. Open a window if you are airing a mild first-use odour. Leave the room and the heater if you are unsure which kind of smell you have. These three bars do not state a thermostat. Two or three heat levels only pick a wattage. The Geepas tops out at 800 W. The SONBION tops out at 800 W. The Warmlite can sit at 1,200 W until you change it. Nothing in the listing cycles them off when the chair is warm or when you fall asleep. Electrical Safety First says not to run a portable heater overnight. Switch it off and unplug it when you leave the room, when you go to bed, and when you have finished the hour at the desk. The Mylek mica panel in the same comparison is 2,000 W. If that is the product you plugged in, the same unplug rule applies, and a coiled extension lead under it is the wrong way to reach a socket. Bare wires on the Nedis and Stiebel wall heaters are not a place-it-on-the-floor job at all. Do not open a cover to reattach a pull cord. Call an electrician for bare wires, a hot socket, a damaged flex, or a new circuit.

What this page does not cover

Wall quartz heaters that ship without a plug, and panels that name a bathroom, are not used like a desk bar. Zone rules, IPX4, and why you do not fit a 13 A plug to bare wires are on the bathroom page. Running cost does not change the metre of clearance. If the bar is the right tool, use it for a person who is in the room, on a floor the tip-over pin can feel, with fabric a metre away, and unplug it when you stop. If the grille has smoked, the socket is hot, or the only way to make it run is to jam the safety pin, stop using it.

Common questions

How far should a halogen heater be from curtains, a chair, and my legs?
At least one metre, which is the clearance Electrical Safety First and the London Fire Brigade give for combustibles, and the distance the London Fire Brigade asks you to sit away. A chair drawn up to the grille is too close even if the heat feels better there. Do not use a 50 cm figure from another brand’s manual for these listings.
Can I dry a towel on the grille?
No. Do not dry clothes on the heater, and do not hang a towel on the guard to warm it. A UK review of the SONBION describes fabric smoking on the grille. If that happens, unplug the heater and let it cool. Do not keep it on to burn the smell away.
Does the tip-over switch work on a carpet?
It may not. A UK review of the Warmlite says the safety pin may not depress on carpet. Use a hard, level floor. Do not wedge the pin down with a coin or a folded rug so the heater stays on. If the bars will not run unless the pin is forced, that surface is wrong for this heater.
Why does a new quartz heater smell, and when is that a fault?
A short smell on first use can be normal on some heaters if you ventilate the room. That comes from a manual for a different model, not from these three listings. Smoke, scorched fabric, a smell that does not fade, or a hot plug means unplug. If you cannot tell a new-heater odour from burning, treat it as a stop.
Can I leave it on overnight?
No. These bars do not state a thermostat, so they stay at the wattage you set. Electrical Safety First says not to use a portable heater overnight. Switch it off and unplug it when you leave and when you go to bed.
Can I plug a 2 kW panel into an extension lead?
Do not run a heater from an extension lead. That advice is general, and it matters more at 2,000 W. The Mylek in this comparison is the 2,000 W panel. A coiled lead under it is the wrong lead. Use a wall socket that is in good condition, or call an electrician if the socket runs hot.
When do I stop and call an electrician?
Call an electrician for bare wires, a bathroom zone, a new circuit, a hot or crackling socket, or a flex that has melted. Do not open a cover to refit a pull cord. A desk bar you can unplug is a different job from a wall heater that arrived without a plug.
