How to use a cabinet gas heater

Updated: 21 October 2026

How to use a cabinet gas heater starts before the flame: build it, match the regulator, leak-test with soapy water, then light. This page is that sequence for a butane cabinet. It is not a ranking. The eleven listings are on the [gas heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/gas-heater). Rooms where people sleep are on the [indoor safety](/hub/portable-heaters/gas-heater/sub/gas-heater-indoor-safety) page. UK manuals and the review notes on these amazon.co.uk listings were used, not a bench test of each ASIN. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Build it before you connect gas

Treat the cabinet as flat-pack until it stands square. Reviews mention missing nuts and a foldable Straame that is still screwed together. Build it on the floor you will use. A Sealey cabinet manual, for that model rather than every ASIN here, asks for about a metre of clear space, and Calor says not to move the heater while it is lit. Do not connect the hose while the case is still open. Blowers and cartridge stoves follow their own manuals.

Bottle, 21 mm clip-on, and the Northern Ireland exception

Domestic cabinets in this tradition are butane. In England, Scotland and Wales, Calor’s buyer’s guide uses a 21 mm clip-on on blue butane cylinders. In Northern Ireland the same guide specifies a 35 mm jumbo clip-on. The foldable Straame and the NJ-H2 both include a 21 mm set. The other Straame’s included line says heater only, so you supply the regulator. Do not fit a propane regulator on a butane cabinet. Calor puts butane near 28–30 mbar and propane near 37 mbar. Change the cylinder outdoors. Propane bottles are not for indoor storage.

Leak test, then light

Brush soapy water on the joints after you clip on and open the cylinder valve, with the heater control still off. Bubbles mean gas. Do not look for the leak with a lighter, a match or the piezo. If the test bubbles, shut the valve, ventilate, and do not light. A Gas Safe engineer is the next step when the leak is in the heater rather than a clip you can reseat. Only when the joints stay still do you light, with the piezo the manual names. If the igniter only clicks, turn the control off, ventilate, and stop after two failed tries. The buying guide is where you check that the listing claimed flame failure.

While it is running

Fresh air has to come from outside for the whole burn. An oxygen depletion sensor, on cabinets that claim one, is a last resort. If it clicks off, turn the gas off and air the room. Calor’s guidance is to turn the heater off before sleep and not to move it while lit. Do not dry clothes on the guard. There is no burn time on these amazon.co.uk cabinets that you should treat as a promise. Soot on the plaques or a blue haze is a stop.

When to stop and call someone

Stop if the soapy water bubbles, if you smell gas after a reseat, if the plaques soot, or if anyone develops a headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion or breathlessness. Go outside first and do not relight the heater. You may change a clip-on regulator. You do not repair the burner where the gas safety regulations apply. A landlord who provides the heater needs the annual Gas Safe check that HSE describes.

Common questions

How do I connect a 15 kg butane bottle?
Build the cabinet first, then clip the regulator on outdoors if you can. In England, Scotland and Wales that is typically Calor’s 21 mm clip-on for a blue butane cylinder. Open the cylinder valve with the heater control off, brush soapy water on the joints, and only light if there are no bubbles. A 15 kg bottle may stick out of the back of the NJ-H2. If it will not sit in the retainer, do not run it perched.
How do I check for a leak without a flame?
Use soapy water on the connections after the gas is on and the control is off. Bubbles mean a leak. Smell is a reason to stop as well. A match, a lighter, or the igniter held against the nut is not a test. If the bubbles are at a clip you can reseat, shut the valve, remake the joint, and test again. If they continue, or if they are on the heater body, leave it off and call a Gas Safe engineer.
Why will the piezo not light?
Reviews in this set describe igniters out of sync, pilots that drop out, and regulators that do not hold a seal. The piezo is the lighting method after a successful leak test, not a tool for finding gas. Turn the control off, let the room clear, and try once more the way the manual shows. If it still only clicks, stop. Do not hold a match at the plaque. A failed igniter is a repair, not a workaround.
What do I do if the heater clicks off in a shut room?
Treat the click as the oxygen depletion sensor doing the job it exists for, on a cabinet that has one. Turn the gas off, open the room to outside air, and do not reset the heater in the same sealed space. The sensor is not a permit to close the window. If anyone feels unwell, leave the building and use the NHS route on the safety page. If the room was already shut, the next session needs a vent that stays open.
How often should it be serviced, and who may repair it?
Liquid Gas UK points to an annual service by a competent person. A landlord who supplies the heater is in the Gas Safe check that HSE describes, each year. You may change a clip-on. Opening the burner, replacing plaques, or fixing a valve is Gas Safe work where the regulations apply. Calor’s ten-year regulator figure is their advice, separate from the shorter hose life. If soot or a blue haze showed up during winter, do not wait for the anniversary. Stop using it and book the engineer.
