How to use a fan heater safely

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the box open, or you are about to plug a new fan heater in for a cold evening in one room, and the useful question is where it stands and when it goes off. How to use a fan heater safely, for a portable model with a remote from this amazon.co.uk set, is a short sequence: a clear level surface, a wall socket, a setting you can explain, and a switch-off when you leave or go to bed. The steps follow Electrical Safety First and UK fire-service advice. This is not a lab test. Which listing has a timer or a stated voltage is on the [fan heater with remote control comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/fan-heater-with-remote-control).

Where it goes before you press on

Put the heater on a flat, stable surface, at least one metre from curtains, bedding, furniture and paper. Electrical Safety First and UK fire services use that gap. Do not dry clothes on it, and do not cover the inlet or the outlet. A tip-over switch is a backstop if the unit is knocked. Plug it into a wall socket, not an extension lead. A reel or a cube of sockets can overheat. If the only socket is across the room, move the heater. If the Dreo DR-HSH020 listing still showed 120 V, confirm a UK three-pin plug before it goes into the wall. That check sits on the fan heater with remote control buying guide.

First switch-on

A short smell the first time you heat the element can be normal. Let that first run happen while you are in the room, and stop if the smell gets worse, if you see smoke, or if the plug feels hot. Set a temperature you can explain, such as 18°C or 20°C, then a run time. A countdown in this set is often up to 12 hours. A 24-hour clock can also turn the heater on later, which is a problem if something is draped on it. Do not add a separate socket timer. If the buttons make no sense, stop and read the leaflet. After you press off, the fan may keep running to cool the element. A fan that blows cold while you are still asking for heat is a fault. Unplug it and use the returns route. Do not open the case.

Overnight and leaving the room

Switch the heater off when you leave the room and when you go to bed. Electrical Safety First says not to leave a portable heater on overnight or while you are asleep. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue allows an exception only when the manufacturer designed that model for unattended use. None of these listings is shown as an overnight heater. A timer, an eco mode or a remote from the pillow does not meet that clause. Keep the heater out of a walkway. The hour you do run it still costs the watts on the meter, which is the fan heater running cost page.

When to unplug and get help

Unplug and get help, rather than opening the case, if the plug discolours, buzzes or smells, if the socket is warm, or if a fuse keeps blowing. An E3 code with no list in the KQPZ instructions is a support problem, not a code to guess. A new socket or a high-load circuit is an electrician's work. Do not put any heater in this set in a bathroom or shower room. An IP rating is not stated. West Midlands Fire Service's public advice is that a standard portable heater does not belong there. If the plate says 120 V, or the plug is not a UK three-pin, stop and go back to the seller.

Common questions

How far from curtains should it sit?
At least one metre from curtains, bedding, furniture and paper. That is the clearance Electrical Safety First and more than one UK fire service publish for a portable heater. A small body does not get a smaller gap. Measure it once while the heater is cold, including the swing if the model oscillates, because a 70° arc can bring the outlet closer to a curtain than the footprint suggests.
Can I plug it into an extension lead?
No. Use a wall socket. A fan heater draws a high current, and an extension lead, especially a coiled reel, can overheat. If the socket is too far away, move the heater. Do not share the same circuit with other high loads such as a kettle and another heater at the same time. The Belaco listing warns against that explicitly.
Can I leave it on while I sleep if it has a timer?
No. A timer can stop the heater after a set period, and you should be awake for that period. Electrical Safety First says not to leave a portable heater on overnight or while you are asleep. Hertfordshire allows an exception only when the manufacturer designed that model for unattended use. None of these listings is shown as that kind of heater. Switch it off and unplug it before you sleep.
Why does the fan keep running after I press off?
On several of these heaters the fan runs on to cool the element. Reviewers describe that on the Dreo DR-HSH020, and the Blucky listing states about 20 seconds. A short cool-down is normal on those notes. Worry if the heater will not stop at all, if it blows cold while you are still asking for heat, or if the smell or the plug gets worse. Then unplug it and treat it as a return.
Can I put it in the bathroom?
No. These listings do not state an IP rating. A bedroom in the product title, or a bathroom in a room-type list, does not make a portable fan heater safe beside a bath or shower. Fire-service advice keeps standard portable heaters out of those rooms. A fixed bathroom heater is a different product and an electrician's installation.
When do I stop and call an electrician?
Call an electrician if the socket is warm, damaged or buzzing, if a fuse keeps blowing, or if you need a new circuit for a high load. A faulty heater itself is usually a return to the seller, not a home repair: unplug it and stop. Do not open the case. Anything you want fixed inside a bath or shower room is also an electrician's job, not a portable heater moved in for the evening.
