How to use an electric heater: plug, smell, unplug

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a plug-in heater on the floor, or one still in the box, and the first question is where it can stand before you touch the switch. This is how to use an electric heater in a UK room: a wall socket, a metre of clear space, a first hour you stay with, and a point where you unplug. It is not a ranking. The twelve listings are on the [electric heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/electric-heater). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. There was no lab test.

Before you switch it on

Put the heater on a level floor, not on a chair or a bed. Electrical Safety First asks for a UK 3-pin plug straight into a wall socket, about one metre from curtains, furniture, bedding, and paper. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service uses the same metre and says not to move the heater while it is on. A 2000 W fan is the wrong load for an extension lead, a reel, or a cube adaptor. Tip-over is claimed on the Dreo heaters, the Russell Hobbs, the Devola convector, the Philips tower, the Pro Breeze title, and the CUQOO. A review of the Warmlite WL44002 says that model has no tilt switch. Overheat protection is not permission to cover the grille. A cracked plug or a socket that already smells is a stop. Only the Devola glass panel claims IP24, and only outside zone 2. The zone distances are in the electric heater buying guide.

The first hour

A new heater can smell on the first heat-up. Manuals for other UK heaters, including Dimplex’s Q-Rad instructions, describe a light odour from residue or dust and say to ventilate. That is not a manual for the Warmlite or the Devola here. Open a window and stay in the room. A smell of electrics, plastic, or fish is a different problem. One Devola review describes a hot plug that smelled of fish. Switch off at the socket and unplug once it is safe to hold. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that do not work as they should. A light tick as metal expands is common. A bang or a plug that discolours is not.

While it is running

Set the lowest output that keeps the room usable. On a Dreo or Russell Hobbs, set a degree target instead of leaving power heat selected all evening. A thermostat cuts minutes at full power. It does not change the price of a kilowatt-hour. The pence are on the electric heater running cost page. The Devola convector claims a 24-hour timer, and reviews say it switches off only. Russell Hobbs claims auto-on and auto-off. Neither claim is a reason to leave the house. Keep a metre clear. Do not hang washing on the heater, drape a towel over the top, or run the cable under a rug. Do not move it while the element is on. Turn oscillation on only when the whole sweep stays a metre from fabric.

When you leave or sleep

Unplug when you go out or go to bed. That is the GOV.UK winter fire line, and Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service says the same about switching off before sleep. Electrical Safety First still advises against leaving portable heaters on overnight. If someone runs heat overnight anyway, the charity’s lower-risk example is an oil-filled radiator, not a fan. This comparison has no oil-filled model. If the heater starts a fire, get out, stay out, and call 999. Updated on 19 October 2026.

Common questions

Can I use an extension lead?
No. Electrical Safety First tells you to plug a portable heater directly into a wall socket. A 2000 W heater is a heavy load for a reel or a cube adaptor, and a coiled reel can overheat. If the socket is in the wrong place, move the heater to a free wall socket or use a different room. Do not run the flex under a rug to reach the corner you prefer.
Can I leave it on overnight?
Unplug it when you go to bed. GOV.UK and fire services in Great Britain and Northern Ireland say to switch heaters off before sleep or when you leave. Electrical Safety First still advises against overnight use of portable heaters. Their lower-risk example, if someone does it anyway, is an oil-filled radiator, which is not one of the heaters in this comparison. A timer is not a substitute for being out of the house.
Can I dry washing near it?
Do not put clothes on the heater or drape washing over the grille. Keep fabrics about a metre away, including curtains and bedding. A towel on top blocks the airflow and can scorch. If the room is the only place the washing can go, move the heater, not the clothes. Drying clothes is one of the uses Electrical Safety First rules out.
What if the plug gets hot?
Switch the heater off at the socket and unplug it when you can hold the plug safely. A plug that is hot, discoloured, or fishy is not a running-in stage. Do not try another extension lead. If the socket itself is scorched or smells, leave it alone and call an electrician. A heater that is faulty from new can be rejected within 30 days under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
What do I do if it starts a fire?
Get everyone out, stay out, and call 999. Do not move the heater once it is involved, and do not go back in for it. Devon and Somerset’s advice is to leave fighting the fire to the fire service. A smoke alarm should already be in the home. Afterward, the heater and the socket are for the insurer and an electrician, not for another evening’s heat.
