Pool air pillow buying guide

Updated: 16.10.2026

You are closing an above-ground pool for the first winter. A pool air pillow sits in the water under that cover so the sheet can rise in the centre. This guide covers the size band, the rope, how full to leave the cushion, and which amazon.co.uk fields to ignore when the title and a centimetre line disagree. Prices and stars are on the [pool winter floats comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-winter-floats). The Products Compared editorial team used those files and the shop charts on 16 October 2026. What you are actually buying

An ice equalizer is a vinyl or PVC cushion you inflate and tie under a winter debris cover. It props the middle of the sheet. It is separate from the cover, the winter chemicals, and the pump you still have to drain. SPATA’s winterising factsheet treats the plant as its own job, so a pillow does not shut a heater down. Some titles borrow summer-toy words. Tktouci’s title also calls it a swimming ball for a lake or hot tub. If the browse rank says Pool Cover Air Pillows and the title still mentions a holiday float, measure the cushion before you trust the plan. None of the ten kept listings includes a pump. The afternoon’s order is on how to use a pool pillow.

Size, as a rule of thumb

The size bands here come from US shop charts. They are a rule of thumb, not a British standard. Active Pool Supply centres one pillow: 4 ft by 4 ft on 12–16 ft rounds, 4 ft by 8 ft on 18–24 ft rounds, and 4 ft by 15 ft on 27–33 ft rounds. On amazon.co.uk, plan from a size the title and the dimensions both state. Tefola and Robelle claim 4 ft by 4 ft, and the length and width agree. NamcheBarwa claims 4 ft by 15 ft, agreed at 4.57 m by 1.22 m. A 4.57 m pillow is longer than a 12 ft pool is wide. Who each listing is for is on the best pool pillow for a winter cover.

Rope, valve, and how full

The pillow has to stay in the centre, and it has to squash when ice forms. Cover sheets sit between one-half and three-quarters full. A hard cushion has no room left to compress. Ropes should still have slack once the cover is on, because a tight line pulls a grommet. Stated lengths are Tefola’s 49 feet, Graceever’s 6 m and NamcheBarwa’s 20 m. Tiardey, Mineup and Posheliox include a rope or tether and give no length. Swimline’s bullets do not name a rope. Robelle’s bullets do not list one either, and United Kingdom reviews say no string or clips arrived. With no millimetres on a listing, you have no thickness to rank.

What the reviews are really saying

Where the files contain review text, the repeated complaint is lost air. Tefola is the top pick because the listing states thickness, a rope, patches and 4.1 from 17. Robelle is the best value on the agreed 4 ft price rule, at 3.3 from 1,313, and UK reviews say it goes down. Mineup is 1.0 from 1, with no review text. Graceever, Posheliox, Generic and Tktouci have no review line.

Common questions

How full should the pillow be?
Cover sheets here use about one-half to three-quarters. Listing lines run from Plastica at about 50 per cent to Mineup at 70–80 per cent. Tefola says about 70 per cent, and Robelle only says do not overfill. Leave the cushion soft enough that you can still press it. A pillow filled to the valve has no compression left when ice forms. Use a cool pump. Two listings name a hair dryer, and heat can soften PVC.
Does a thicker claim matter if there are no millimetres?
Only Tefola (0.3 mm) and Mineup (0.5 mm) state a thickness, and both figures are listing claims. Mineup is 1.0 from 1 review, with no review text in the file, so the thicker number has no UK winter story behind it. If a listing gives no millimetres, there is nothing to compare. A light parcel, such as Posheliox at 434 g, tells you the pack is small. It does not give you a film thickness.
What if the size field is a few centimetres and the title says four feet?
Use the title as the claim and treat the tiny field as unusable. Swimline’s title says 4 ft by 8 ft while the size field says 3 cm by 3 cm. Graceever’s title says 120 cm by 120 cm while a field says 10 mm by 10 mm. Parcel lines around 23–35 cm, on Posheliox, Generic and Tktouci, describe the pack. They are not an inflated plan you can lay against a 15 ft pool.
Does it come with a pump?
No kept listing in this set includes a pump. The bullets tell you to use a household pump and stop in the 60–80 per cent band, or, on Robelle, simply not to overfill. Budget the pump before you start the cover. A hair dryer is named on Generic and Tktouci. A cool blower keeps the heat off the vinyl.
Is a 4 ft by 15 ft pillow right for a 12 ft pool?
On the Active Pool Supply chart, 4 ft by 15 ft is the band for rounds around 27–33 ft. A 12–16 ft round sits in the 4 ft by 4 ft band. NamcheBarwa’s agreed size is 4.57 m by 1.22 m, longer than a 12 ft pool is wide. Tefola and Robelle are the 4 ft squares whose dimension fields agree. The long pillow is the right search only when your pool is in that long band.
