Pool vacuum for an above-ground pool

Updated: 21 October 2026

A pool vacuum for an above-ground pool has to work without a skimmer, and it has to tolerate a liner that may not be the flat slab a robot listing assumes. Wrinkles, a soft base and the size of a summer pool decide the tool. A hot tub is a different page. The rows are on the [pool vacuum comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-vacuum). Prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf figures on 19 October 2026. This is not a lab test. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Most of these pools have no skimmer

A suction vacuum that clips into a skimmer needs the port. A lot of Intex-style and Bestway-style summer pools do not have one. Filtration is a cartridge hung on the wall, so that method is the wrong shelf. What is left is a garden-hose jet, a cordless stick, or a cordless floor robot. The LATERN at £11.99 and the Solkraes at £21.99 need a garden hose and do not need the pool pump. If a local hosepipe restriction is in force, a stick is the tool that does not open the tap. How the three types differ is the pool vacuum buying guide.

Flat floor, or wrinkles and a slope

The POOLPURE robots are sold for flat above-ground pools, with 90 m² and 100 minutes stated, and they exclude slopes and heavy wrinkles. A summer liner wrinkles when the water is low, cold, or the chemistry is off. Bestway's US article describes those causes. It is not a measurement of every UK pool. If you can see folds you would trip on, the robot is outside its own sentence. A 24 by 12 ft pool took two runs, and a small round pool can turn the path back early. A stick does not print that exclusion. You can slow the head at a fold. If the liner is wrinkled, leave the POOLPURE rows. Whether to let a machine drive is robotic pool cleaner vs handheld vacuum.

What runtime the listings claim for a summer pool

Treat the printed minutes as claims. The VIVOHOME states up to 60 minutes, 4,200 litres per hour and a pole from 90 cm to 278 cm, at £79.83 to £79.99, with 4.3 from 893 reviews. The PoolyPoly 1818 states about 60 minutes, a handle only to 141 cm and a 1.5 litre filter, at £59.99 with 4.2 from 303. The outlet must stay under water. The 1814 will not start above 30 cm, so it suits a spa more than a wide framed floor. None of these figures is a lab clean. Saltwater is not suitable on the VIVOHOME listings and is not stated on the others.

What to buy for this pool

If the liner is flat, firm and free of heavy wrinkles, and you do not want to walk the floor, open a POOLPURE and read the wheel and speed notes. The white RPC-100A at £149.00 has 3.4 from 100 reviews. If the floor does not qualify, the exclusion is printed. If you will steer, the yellow VIVOHOME is the default for a freshwater framed pool in the 10 ft class. The blue PoolyPoly 1818 is the best value at £59.99, if 141 cm of handle is enough and the outlet stays submerged. If the only mess is leaves and the tap is allowed, the LATERN at £11.99 is the hose with 172 reviews, including a connector that falls off. An inflatable that creases under your knees is the wrinkled case even when the catalogue calls the floor flat.

Common questions

Will a robot cope with liner wrinkles?
Not if the wrinkles are heavy. Every POOLPURE listing in this comparison says it is not suitable for heavy wrinkles or for slopes, alongside a 90 m² flat-floor claim. A mild ripple you can barely see is a judgement you make at the pool. A fold you can trip on is the exclusion. A stick can be steered over a crease.
What size of above-ground pool matches a 60-minute stick?
The listings state up to 60 minutes on the VIVOHOME and about 60 minutes on the PoolyPoly 1818. They do not state a pool diameter next to that clock. UK reviews mention 10 ft pools and pools around 3 m by 2 m for the sticks, and a 24 by 12 ft pool that needed two robot runs. Use those as owners' pools, not as a new official size.
Do I need a skimmer?
Not for these vacuums. Hose jets, cordless sticks and the POOLPURE floor robots do not connect to a skimmer. Many above-ground pools do not have one. A pump-suction head is the tool that needs the port, and it is not in this set. You still need whatever filter the pool itself uses.
Is an inflatable pool too soft?
It can be, for a robot. The POOLPURE rows allow a flat above-ground floor and refuse heavy wrinkles. A soft inflatable often creases. UK notes also describe a path that turns back early on a small round pool. A hose jet such as the Solkraes names inflatable pools in the use line, and it has no star rating in the file. A stick is the safer electric choice when the floor moves underfoot.
Does it clean the wall of a framed pool?
The POOLPURE listings do not claim the wall. They are floor robots. A cordless stick can be aimed at the wall you can reach with the printed pole: up to 278 cm on the VIVOHOME, and 66–141 cm on the 1818 handle. That is reach, not a climb. Algae on the wall may still need a brush.
