How to use a pool skimmer net

Updated: 16.10.2026

The pole is flexing, and the leaves you just lifted are sliding back into the pool. This is how to use a pool skimmer net on a UK garden pool: a slow stroke, an empty bag, and a stop when the job is silt, a tear, or a pool you do not own. The kits are on the [pool skimmer net comparison](/hub/pool-care/pool-skimmer-net). The Products Compared editorial team used UK cleaning guides and those amazon.co.uk notes on 16 October 2026, and did not run a pool. What a hand net is for

A hand net lifts what is floating, and some of what has just sunk, if the bag is deep enough. It does not dose chlorine, vacuum silt, or replace the pump basket. Oasis lists a shallow skimmer and a deep net as different tools. Take whole leaves off the surface first. Whether 60 cm includes the head stays on the pool skimmer net buying guide.

The stroke

Hold the frame at a slight angle and move smoothly. That is Go Aqua’s instruction, not a lab method. A flat slap sends leaves away. Circle the corners instead of stabbing the liner. Click or screw every joint before the first pass. Jsdoin reviews say the pole bends if you force a fast stroke. Flat versus deep is on the pool skimmer versus leaf rake page.

Empty the net, then the basket

Lift the frame clear before the bag is full. A shake over the pool puts the leaves back. Tip the load onto the grass, then rinse the mesh. If the mesh leaves the frame, stop. Then empty the pool’s own skimmer basket. Oasis treats that as a separate step because the pump keeps pulling fines in while you walk the edge. A net does not empty that basket. How a temporary pool collects a fresh fall of leaves is on the above-ground pool skimmer net page.

When the pole or the mesh fails

Force the Jsdoin and the pole bends. The shared 4BAOHUI comments say the pole gives at full length and the neck feels close to snapping, even where a bullet says it will not bend. Click every section on the grass first. A UK review of the CNMTCCO, which states a 204 cm pole, says the handle is hollow, fills on a deep scoop, and then runs out over you. Tip the pole to empty it. A curved frame that will not scratch is a listing sentence, not a test in these files.

When to stop

Stop when the debris is silt. An Epesl review left very fine silt on an 8 ft floor, and a vacuum was the next tool. Stop if the liner is torn or you can see a cable at the waterline. Public pools, and pools let as a business, sit under the Health and Safety Executive’s HSG179, which is not a garden-net manual. Go Aqua’s frequency is advice, not a British Standard: daily if the pool is in constant use, otherwise two or three times a week.

Common questions

How do you skim without pushing the leaves away?
Hold the frame at a slight angle and draw it slowly, so the leaves stay on the mesh instead of riding a bow wave. Circle the corners rather than stabbing them. A fast stroke is what Jsdoin reviews say bends the pole, and it is also how a fine mesh shoves debris sideways. Empty the bag before it overflows back into the pool.
How often should you skim a garden pool?
Go Aqua UK says daily if the pool is in constant use, and two or three times a week if it is not. Treat that as their advice, not a regulation. A cover reduces what lands overnight. Leaves left on a liner can stain, so a missed week is more than a change in the colour of the water.
Do you scrape the floor with the same net?
Use the surface pass first. Oasis lists a shallow skimmer and a deep net as different tools, and a deep bag is what holds a heavier load from the floor. An Epesl review on an 8 ft pool lifted debris and left very fine silt. Scraping that silt with a surface mesh clouds the water and does not replace a vacuum.
Why does the pole bend or snap?
The joint is not home, or the stroke is too fast for a light aluminium tube. Jsdoin reviews describe bending when the pole is forced. A section that would not attach left one reviewer short of a 15 foot middle. Cozii reviews describe a plastic thread that snaps and lodges in the next tube. Shorten the pole or ease the stroke.
What do you do when the handle fills with water?
A UK review of the CNMTCCO says the handle is hollow and fills on a deep scoop, then drains over you. Tip the pole on the grass until it is empty, and avoid storing it wet. That review does not give a plug or a diameter. If every scoop soaks you, the pole is the wrong tool for under-surface work.
When is a vacuum the next tool?
When the floor is fine silt rather than leaves. The Epesl case is an 8 ft pool, debris in the net, silt left behind. A torn liner, a cable in the water, or a public or holiday-let pool is a stop, not a harder skim. HSE guidance for pools used by the public is not a set of strokes for this net.
